Perhaps you have worked up an appetite after exploring Myanmar’s largest metropolitan city, Yangon. The former capital is one for the ages, not as developed as other Southeast Asian metros (but getting there) and home to a plethora of lakes and parks, traditional Burmese architectures, temples and pagodas as well as colonial buildings. So, what’s there to eat? Lots! There are fresh markets displaying a wide range of produce and shops catering to a variety of desserts, curry and of course, tea! From the sweet (fried donuts) to the strange (fermented tea leaf salad), you'll get to try it all!
We all need a little food, don’t we? Set aside one full day where you just can’t get enough of Burma’s tasty treats! Head straight to downtown Yangon and at the center of it all – the main morning markets on 18th Street. Anything food related can be found here, from fresh vegetables and fruits to fish and meats as well as a variety of dipping sauces and pastes popular in Burmese cooking (including the famous balachung- a mix of fish paste and chili). Another morning market area at Seikkan Tha Street should appease your taste buds – try some
palata (thick pancakes), and exotic local fruits.
The sweet sights, tempting smells and tantalizing tastes have only just begun! Continue past many vendors selling breakfast treats popular with the locals, such as pancakes, steamed sticky rice with beans and fried delights such as donuts and samosa. All of these may sound familiar with you, but try the Burmese variety. Your tongue will be pleasantly surprised. And what is Southeast Asia without noodles stalls? These are popular meeting points where busy school children and workers alike gather for their quick eats. Stop and taste some of the treats as you walk along.
Head to Maung Aye Tea Shop for some authentic and soothing Burmese tea (called le peth) and a snack. This is a pure Burmese activity. Now you see why locals can spend hours upon hours at these tea shops.
Crossing the street we'll stop in at Shwe Myot Taw, with great palata and let pet thoke, Burmese tea leaf salad. The fermented tea leaves are served with a selection of fried nuts and beans and can be washed down with a fresh fruit juice.
From here, head to one of the city’s most popular eating
spot at Feel Myanmar. It is so good that by 1.30 in the afternoon, the place is sold out! Sample an array of local curries all accompanied by dozens of vegetables, some dips and a soup. This is very traditional, tasty Burmese lunch and a perfect way to complete your culinary exploration
