Mangrove Forests
Not far from BSB On the way back to NZ we stopped off in Brunei for another 24 hours, to see more and to break up the journey.
We had one thing we wanted to see, and that was some Proboscis Monkeys. We were planning originally to take a regular water taxi, as the tours were expensive. But then we found a company with a special on in February, and persuaded them to let us have that same price in January (well, it was close to the end of the month!) This meant we still paid a bit more than with a regular water taxi, but had longer out, a better guide, and a better chance of seeing monkeys. If there werent any in the first couple of places the regular guys took you to, it was a case of oh well, they're not out here today, and back to town. This tour - with only the two of us on - was out for just over two hours and we went to loads of places, and saw heaps of monekys, Proboscis Monkeys and Long Tailed Macaques. Amazing. I wont rave too much, as not everyone is as enthused about wildlife as the two
Monitor lizard
While looking for Probiscis Monkeys, we found this of us, but they are cool monkeys - the Proboscis ones, not the more common macaques. Very shy, not at all habituated, used to people coming up and looking at them. We also saw some monitor lizards, egrets and sea eagles.
Stayed with another great couch surfing person in an apartment not far from the city centre, perfect walking distance if you're without packs and the pouring rain. We weren't. Great apartment though, like being in the country - views of trees and bush not the city, unless you looked sideways out of the lounge where you got a nice view of the mosque lit up at night.
