Map of Antarctica
Background: Speculation over the existence of a "southern land" was not confirmed until the early 1820s when British and American commercial operators and British and Russian national expeditions began exploring the Antarctic Peninsula region and other areas south of the Antarctic Circle. Not until 1840 was it established that Antarctica was indeed a continent and not just a group of islands. Several exploration "firsts" were achieved in the early 20th century. Following World War II, there was an upsurge in scientific research on the continent. A number of countries have set up year-round research stations on Antarctica. Seven have made territorial claims, but not all countries recognize these claims. In order to form a legal framework for the activities of nations on the continent, an Antarctic Treaty was negotiated that neither denies nor gives recognition to existing territorial claims; signed in 1959, it entered into force in 1961.

Well we´re back! We survived two storms on the Drake (called the Drake Shake), being hunted by a Leopard Seal, barked at by a Fur Seal, a mini Tsunami caused by a glacier calving and being covered in penguin shit (well Gordon shouldn´t roll around in it then.....)! All in all it was wonderful, the landscapes, the icebergs, the animals (although we only saw 2 types of penguins - storms at sea made us miss a landing) and even the rough weather all made for a memorable trip down south (it´s rather exciting standing on the bridge and watching the waves [View Full Entry]

The Adventure On January 8 we boarded Holland America's 61,000 tonne Amsterdam and made an overnight sail to Montevideo where we visited the city centre. Two days later we were at Port Stanley in the Falklands where visited a Gentoo penquin rookery...over very bumpy trails. Joan made friends with one. The wind was about 50 mph, but it was a pleasant warm day and it was thrilling to see a huge number of these birds together in their natural environment. Two days later we circled Elephant Island famous for the place where 22 of Shackleton's men survived for 99 days while [View Full Entry]

After nearly 3 and a half months living and working here at the South Pole, my flight back to Christchurch leaves in 3 days. Believe it or not - I'm going to miss being here quite a bit. It was far better an experience than I'd anticipated and I've had a blast. Everyone working down here is great - and hopefully I'll be able to keep in touch with the friends I've made here for a long time. Indeed, if I have the opportunity to find employment for my wife down here, I'd be happy to winter next year. I don't [View Full Entry]

I haven't been posting lately because I really wanted to be able to add pictures to these entries, but i don't think I'm going to have that kind of internet access until I'm home, and you guys probably don't want to wait that long. So I'm going to start posting the entries I wrote months ago and saved for when I could post pictures. But I'm abandoning the pictures for now. This entry was written on my first visit to Antarctica toward the end of December. I’m skipping a couple of destinations, because I think Antarctica trumps every other port I’ve [View Full Entry]

On January 18th we arrived in Buenos Aires and as always the first days we spent, besides sightseeing, doing research to figure out what to do in Argentina. One of our dreams was to go to the most southern city of Argentina, Ushuaia and get on board of one of the ships that sails to the Antarctic. We didn´t book anything in advance because, according to the Lonely Planet, you can great discounts as soon as you are there. On January 21st we were lucky and able to book an expedition, that´s what they call them, that was leaving on January [View Full Entry]

The last few days have been filled with a lot of running around trying to prepare everything for one final day of work when it comes. I got a spare pre-amp, a device that amplifies a signal prior to it being transmitted through a cable to the processing unit in order to make the signal stronger than the noise it picks up along the way, in the mail from the South Pole. It was dated 1999 and even back then nobody had an idea what it was. There were a couple notes with question marks all over it. I went to [View Full Entry]

Cruise #4: Valparaiso, Chile: This was the start of the cruise for us, and not the greatest start for me. I had been experiencing some tooth pain, and so I had the ship book me a dentist appointment, and ended up having a root canal performed! What a day! Afterwards, I met up with Larry and my friend Nicole for a little lunch up at our favorite spot - the top of Ascensor Concepcion. Here we had lunch at Café Turri, which was absolutely delicious. Afterwards we took a walk and did a little grocery shopping before we had to board [View Full Entry]
