The flight was great and on time. We watched a couple of movies, took a tylanol pm and woke up somewhere over Africa. My college roomate's mother, Edna, met us at the airport. She is our travel agent. We spent some time having coffee in the airport and going over the trip itinerary with her. We couldn't chat too long because we had to catch a flight to Cape Town. ... read more

Yo homies, BEFORE I START, please be aware that I have added so many photos this time, that this blog goes over two pages. I think you have to click on page 2, to see all the photos. Well, it’s been another week and another 168 hours of bucketing rain (Although for some strange reason it hasn’t rained today.) The road to Mombasa flooded a few days ago and the road had to be closed: people were stuck in the cars for 20 hours. I’m actually starting to get a bit sick of it now, as it restricts our movement and means we have to rely on getting taxis (or getting soaked) or waiting for the rain to stop, which it doesn’t. After a few days we have just started riding through it, regardless of ... read more

Looking at my blog it seems like I am always on vacation. Peace Corps can be a lot of fun and I am so lucky to live in such an amazing country that has so many tourist attractions. But I am most often in Kelaa and usually doing something productive. This was a big weekend for me. On the 19th the women’s association I’ve been working with, El Ghad Al Bassim, organized a “cultural competition”. I’ve never seen anything like it in the US but it seems to be a fairly normal event here. There was a performance by Kelaa’s star lute player, Abderrhmane. I’ve seen him at events around town before and always noticed him for playing and singing beautifully. What I didn’t know until Saturday was that he speaks English perfectly. He’s never noticed ... read more

Thank God for Africa! The weekend was a mixture of wonderfulness and boredom. First off it is winter in South Africa, so going to the beach is not the best idea. Second, the waves in South Africa are monsters compared to the waves in Virginia so no one wanted to swim anyway. The first day in Kleinmond was the educational part. We learned history and we were given a tour by the deputy Mayor and his staff. It is beautiful there and everything is right on the ocean. Here, you can smell the salt in the air. That evenign we walked to the beach. We climbed over some huge rocks attached to the shoreline and we watched the waves crash into shore. As the sunset behind the mountains and I had my first Ah ha Africa ... read more

14-20 May After stumbling back to Efroud I got back on a bus and headed on to the second great city of Morocco - Marrakesh. After passing up the opportunity to walk through some beautiful gorges along the way due to concerns about getting sick again, I got sick again - this time in the small city of Ourzazate. The same symptoms presented themselves and I lay in bed for two days before going to the doctor in town. After walking up a set of dark stairs that didn't inspire too much confidence I arrived in a waiting hall in a second-story private clinic. After talking to the doctor in a mix of English and Spanish I told him that I was worried about malaria. He briefly examined me and didn't think that was the ... read more

Galib certainly leads the life of adventure. He chooses the path less travelled. It has officially been 5 weeks since he left the fresh rain of Vancouver behind. I have kept myself occupied with wedding plans...though Galib & I planned mostly everything before he left. As a bride-to-be, I could have not have hoped for a more involved fiancé and the utmost supportive friends and family. I will be posting some photos that Galib sends my way for you to view. Some photos make it hard to believe that a place such as this exists and his emails will just make you laugh out loud. Here is an excerpt from one of Galib's emails regarding the culture shock phase of his first 2 weeks in Khartoum: "You wake up at 5 am to the prayers blaring ... read more

Well, finally, after nearly a week of waiting (for the others.....1 1/2 weeks for me) I left Addis; it was actually a sad moment, I had grown to like that city and the habits I had got into there. My final days in the city were quite fun though, going out every night to the plenthora of bars on the Piazza, teaching the others (David (Beats), Dave, and Tania) Irish Snap...the proceeding to play it in the middle of a seedy little bar in a dodgy part of the Merkato, drinking proper Tej...which made Tania sick...then getting charged 8Birr just because Beats took a picture (we got them back though, snapping away happily as we left), watching Top Gun and Dave singing along to 'Highway to the Danger Zone', and many other things I can't remember. ... read more

Africa » Egypt May 20th 2007

Ah Siwa - it is now the third day (can you believe it after all the writing i've done??!!) of my trip. I think I'll try to be a bit more brief as I am sure that my lack of insight is making for some tiresome reading. Yet another ordinary breakfast - the meals here in Egypt seem to be unendingly ordinary, not bad.... just ordinary. But for those who know me, you know that I'm a bit of a foodie, so i'm just being snobbish, and given that we are staying in 'budget' accomodation, I'm not really expecting much so I'm not complaining, just stating a fact... hehe. Anyhow, this day was action-packed. First stop was the Ancient Fortress of Shali, and place built in a time that I forgot (i've got it written ... read more

So we arrived into Dar es Salaam this morning, were met by the guy from the language school and have settled into our Salvation Army Hostel which is basic but will probably seem like a luxurious memory once we move out to the camps! There was a church service going on in the hostel which I popped into for a few minutes, sang a few songs, great stuff! Anyway we're on our way to the beach so just to say I've arrived, all's well, other volunteers seem really cool and will write a proper entry soon!... read more

Africa » Namibia » Kaokoland May 20th 2007

Before I left Namibia in early April, Keith Leggett, of desert-dwelling elephant research project fame, had asked if I’d be interested in coming back to work on his project in May when he and his new research assistant, Juliane Schaub, would be taking the year’s first Earthwatch volunteers into Kaokoland. I didn’t need asking twice! My role was primarily to help Juliane with the volunteers setting up and running the camp, and with local geography, as I’d been in the area a little more than she had at that point. I guess you could say I was to be the general dogsbody, but I was a very, very willing one, jumping at the excuse to go back to Kaokoland, particularly as Keith and I had not managed to get there in March, thanks to the ... read more
