I had a unique Christmas this year. Katie, Alisha and I managed to find transport to Lilongwe on the Thursday before Christmas. On the way we saw these guys standing on the side of the road with what we thought were umbrellas. Alisha finally told us they were actually mushrooms and we pulled over and bought a few. That evening dinner was amazing, and I am still shocked at how enormous mushrooms get here. Anyway, that is beside the point. You want to hear about my vacation I am sure. So that Saturday our bus from Lilongwe to Dar es Salaam [View Full Entry]

NEw plan! Africa » Mali » North-West » Timbuktu
Helloooo again! Wow; two entries in 2 days, im on a roll! Just wanted to let yall know that hayley and i sporadically had a change of plans. We met some americans/ german people our age that had just got back from Timbuktu, and spoke about the trip so highly. We explained to them we were going to go, but then decided not to because of expenses, long travel time (cause its in the northern part of mali... the saharan desert), etc. But they told us that we pretty much have to go, even if its for a short time. They [View Full Entry]

Day 51 Africa » South Africa » Limpopo » Pietersburg
Day 51 We woke up as damp as we’d gone to bed, my feet particularly seemed un-dryable. It made me think of the 1st world war and trench foot and made us all even keener to get well out of Mozambique! We didn’t leave our campsite until 8 because we wanted to get into Maputo in time for the opening of the banks so we could all change the Mozambique Metical we’d withdrawn back into Rand because once you get into South Africa they’re a bit sniffy about excepting certain currencies. It took us a good hour anyway to drive back [View Full Entry]

It looks like scum, but it has nothing to do with Liverpool FC. Its froth caused a cold weather front hitting the tempestuous ocean out at sea, the next land mass south of South Africa is Antartica so... [more]
Back from the town of Wilderness to Stellenbosch on Christmas eve, 'The Banghoek Place' in Stellenbosch is the place we'd stayed when we first got to South Africa and being the most comfortable place we'd stayed in so far it was what was required for Christmas day. One or two of the bathrooms in other places we've stayed could have done with a good scrub and I didn't want any more of that over the xmas period. The whole thing of staying at backpacker hostels took us a little time to get back into, Its was 7 years ago we were [View Full Entry]

Last Day on Sonesta Nile River Cruise December 29, 2008 After breakfast on board, we had an early start, leaving our ship at 7:30am with our bags in tow. We boarded a bus, crossed the Nile and toured the West Bank with our group. In ancient Egypt, the tombs were all built on the west side because the day “died” in the west, swallowed by the goddess Nutt. People lived on the East Bank where the sun was reborn each morning. We visited the Valley of the Kings and Queens, which included the famous Colossi of Memnon, three tombs of the [View Full Entry]

Dzis mielismy wyjechac o 5 rano. Pobudka o 4.30. 5.20 zaczynam sie denerwowac, slonce wschodzi, zwierzeta juz pewnie najedzone. Wchodze do kuchni, a tam w najlepsze smaza dla nas omlety i wlasnie zaczynaja piec tosty. Afryka. Nie znam sposobu, zeby cos u przyspieszyc. Jak dojezzdamy do p [View Full Entry]

I am HOME! Africa » South Africa
I am HOME. What an absolutely wonderful (and a little weird) feeling. We arrived home to JFK the morning of the 23rd after 26 hours of travel. The family had an absolutely incredible vacation in Cape Town and on Safari. Katie Mom and Dad met my family in Langa, and Omie in Bo Kaap. I’m so glad they got a taste of what life was like for me. Our safari was absolutely incredible. We spent 4 days seeing the endless skies, the beautiful bush, and every African animal you can possibly think of. We watched a leopard leap into a tree [View Full Entry]
