Last time I wrote I think it was just after the Easter Weekend. Since, I have been back in Nairobi, went to the National Museum and checked out an exhibit on the post- election violence last year called Kenya on Fire. I got some exploring done in Nairobi, using public transportation- mini vans called Matatus. I sat in on some workshops working on SWOT- strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of running trips and the organization. My group arrived last Friday. They are from the University of Guelph. The students have been fundraising and planning this trip for over a year [View Full Entry]

Life on the road Africa » Namibia » Sossusvlei
Day 9 (Wednesday 29-Apr-09, JRJ) Up at 5am to go on a sunrise walk at Fish River Canyon as we missed the sunset walk last night due to timing issues. Wasn't too bad having to get up so early, and we were glad of a nice walk in preparation for the 10 hour driving day. Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon, but it doesn't seem as spectacular for some reason. After walk, had brekkie and off we went. Stopped at a small town called Bethanie for a quick toilet break and bought [View Full Entry]

Stayed only one night at Dijembes Backpackers in Storms River. The only reason we went there was because we wanted to go horse back riding. But the horses were getting their flu shot and could not be ridden for a few weeks after that. =( Instead we went for a hike in the forest with a German girl and a South African woman. Hike... pfft... We chose the 5km track and felt that would be a good distance. It was too short! *haha* The German girl we took the walk with lived at another hostel and after dinner we took a [View Full Entry]

Trip in Morocco Africa » Morocco
Morocco is such a fabulous place to visit. We found the people so welcoming and very hospitable. My husband and I spent one week touring Morocco with a guide that was referred to us by another friend. We arrived in Marakech and our tour guide was there to meet us with a full itinerary that we made a few adjustments to accommodate our curiosity of Morocco. Driving into the heart of Marakech was more of a modern version than we had expected. Driving on the main avenue gave us a view of the Hassan II where the city lights played on [View Full Entry]

I hope that you understood there to be some sarcasm in the title. I just recently returned from spending a little time in Western Kenya. I went with a friend to visit some people from her church who were in town to work with a church. The place we went to originally was Kitale, Kenya. The ride there was long and bumpy at times. First of all we didn’t leave for 30 minutes past when we were supposed to. I guess I can understand that, but by the time we left we were stuck in the daily traffic jam the entire [View Full Entry]

Our Transport to Timbuktu!
Our Transport to Timbuktu!
Limited space, poor air circulation, and completely packed... Perfect!
Man...and I thought the trip from Ouaga to Mopti was long... boy was I wrong! Sixteen hours... that's how long it took to reach Timbuktu. Sixteen hours cramped into the back of a Tro Tro filled with eight people in the back, four in the middle, three in the front, and one guy on top. Sixteen hours, of minimal water and no food. Sixteen hours of hot hundred degree weather amplified exponentially by the extremely close quarters. Sixteen hours of sandy Sahara dust blowing in through the windows. Sixteen hours stuck in a vehicle where no one spoke English. Sixteen hours [View Full Entry]

surf, sail, quad, walk or ride a camel
In the morning we walked along the beach back to the medina. Essaouira is also known as “Windy City Africa” and draws hundreds of surfers. In addition to wind surfing, you can also kite surf, sail, quad or if you haven’t had enough of camels yet ride camels. I was going to buy a rug if the price was right. After visiting a few shops J&M got a large rug for about 1/3 of the asking price. I figured I could piggyback on the deal and get something that looked nice. However, like a guidebook pointed out, many shops are willing [View Full Entry]

Staying Positive Africa » Tanzania » East » Dar es Salaam
I'm a very positive person 99% of the time so I'm attempting to remain that way while here.. At the moment, I'm feeling like the time spent here in Dar could be better spent elsewhere. I've been sitting at my computer dawdling since 9AM (it's now 2:30PM) with nothing to do. Many people refer to "Africa time" here and it's quite apparent at the office--I've been waiting for a list of health facilities from a man upstairs for days now.. which I can't continue my work without. Every time I go upstairs to meet with him, his secretary tells me he's [View Full Entry]
