Palm wine.. Burkina Faso.. Polygamy?
Published: March 12th 2009Africa » Burkina Faso » Centre » OuagadougouUpdate on the last few weeks.. It's been a while... and I've finally found the apostrophe on the French keyboard ;-) (Colin) In the last few weeks I've done quite a lot- though perhaps not with the work here! I've been cycling around Kpalime, seeing more waterfalls and trekking-a-plenty; spotting fab things, creatures and colours in the jungle, tasting some good and some really not-so-good palm wine... Last Friday (27th Feb) I left in the morning for Lome- the best time to get a bus anywhere is 6am here. I was squashed in between a large Togolese woman and her son for the duration; after many stops and waiting around for the bus to be full again we arrived in Lome 3 hours later; I wandered around for a bit, ate some fufu from one ... read more
Well we took almost 16 hrs of train to get from Luxor to Alexandria, but made it fine. Tired but fine. Found a great small hotel, 6th floor, overlooking a town square, right on the Mediterranean. Had a great Koshari lunch then lounged day away in town. Watched sunset with bottle of wine. Great night. Next day made our way to Fort Qaitbey. Not sure on history here. Took tram back into town and was pick pocketed by someone of my beloved IPOD. SOAB!!! Spent rest of day in Police station having my statement translated into Arabic for my insurance. Wished we had more time here, but back to Cairo then to Turkey!... read more
Don’t sugarcoat it kid, give it to her straight
Published: March 6th 2009Africa » Ethiopia » Amhara RegionIt’s Tuesday today, which I’ve decided is a good day for writing blogs. In my Kebele (sub-district) there is no electricity, however by the genius of modern technology (laptop battery) I have about an hour until my computer poops out. Ooohh. To add onto last weeks post, my landlord (Nigist) continues to be especially, almost uncomfortably, friendly. There was a problem with my shower (ooohh) so at lunch time a “plumber” (actually just a guy with a plunger - they should call him a “plunger-er”) came over and tried to fix it. By the time Sean and I were finished with lunch, the problem had not yet resolved itself so I left my house unlocked in the generous and undoubtedly safe hands of Nigist. I just got back from dinner out on the town and not ... read more
Ek is Elzanne Robinson, ek is 'n ex fsa uitruilstudent van die Desember program in 2008. Ek wil net sê ek dink hierdie Africa our Home projek is AWESOME, ONGELOOFLIK!! Ek het baie geleer in Duitsland, maar die grootste ding wat ek geleer het is dat ek NOOIT in my lewe uit SA sal verhuis nie. EK BLY NET HIER. DIT IS MY HUIS, MY ALLES!!
"Die dadels was so naby aan hom, byna by sy mond. Hier lê hy, by die fontein, verhonger, verdors, dood. Hoe is ... read more
Well it's been a while... hopefully it's given you time to get thru reading the last blog... here's another lengthy one, enjoy :o) Monday 9th February Did the usual routine ... however, slightly earlier. We had been asked to be in work early... Today was going to be an exciting day! Got to work for 7.45am. Then sat around... waiting, as should have been expected, for something to happen and someone to organise something! At least I didn't get here for 7am (like one girl!) so, by 9am we were going... finally! As per, it was a last minute rush, they have all this time to get something organised and then they decide that we have to leave in 2 minutes! We all got changed into t-shirts with slogans on 'Support the Right to Information Law' ... read more
Who is this Teddy Afro and what does he have to do with me, you may very well ask. Well, he plays reggae and I love reggae, he is an Ethiopian musician (and some kind of hero in his country - check the Net if you are interested) and I was in Ethiopia and got to know his music, AND: I went to a disco in Awasa with “the boys” (thank you for taking me!) where they had live music and also played some songs of Teddy Afro and it was packed and hot and fun and everyone danced and shouted the lyrics and smiled at me (the only white person in the room!) and women hugged me and said “welcome”, and I just danced and danced and danced … Henok, Dani, Malarku and Masvin, ... read more
"Lets get this tro on the road!"
Published: March 5th 2009Africa » Ghana » Western » Sekondi-TakoradiThis weekend I finally made it to the infamous Green Turtle Lodge. I had heard so many great things about it that I couldn’t wait to go and it was the first weekend they could fit us in. Bethany, Melissa, and Max headed up there the day before but I had class so I went on Saturday with John. This weekend just further proved the theory of “the best laid plans of mice and men…” We left the hostel at 6 am bright and early. I was dirty and needed to shower, but the hostel was out of water. No water=no shower=no brushed teeth… yum. We went to the trotro station and then we had to find the bus station to take us to Takoradi. We started asking around for the bus station and a guy ... read more
Hey guys...so sorry i havn't written in a while! I have about two minutes internet time so here i go.. Well, im in namibia now and oh my word it is a beautiful country. We camped in the Bushmen town of Tsumkwe write at the border of Namibia after one treacherous drive out of botswana! After one night there we headed of to the famous Etosha National Park - we decided to camp outside the park rather than in to save money - where we spent 3 nights enjoying all the area had to offer. It is rainy season at the moment and believe me when i tell you that we are definitely getting more rain over here than you are! Etosha was wet but stunning - we came across so many animals and the pan, ... read more
Kilimanjaro - Machame Route - Days 4-6
Published: April 5th 2009Africa » Tanzania » North » Mount KilimanjaroKilimanjaro - Machame Route - Day 4 - Friday 6th March I woke up on the morning of day 4 after a very good night’s sleep, much to my relief after the freezing cold night I had at Shira Caves. We were up early and the sky was very clear. We had a beautiful sight of the summit once again and so we took the opportunity to take our team photo, all seven of us! I had with me my guide, Felex, four porters (one of whom was my waiter) and Alex my cook. They were all very friendly although I saw nothing of Alex the cook as he was always buried deep in his tent, cooking! The day started slowly as we were only going to be walking for about 3 hours and were ascending ... read more
