EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS!

So here it is finally, the first entry of this round-the-world travel blog everyone has been asking me about for the past two months... I am in the plane that is taking me to Johannesburg, and I have no idea what to expect, essentially because I haven't prepared this trip by the book. Inexplicably for anyone that knows me a little (that includes me), I haven't conscientiously organized, planned and anticipated every detail of this year-long journey. I was just happy to let "life happen to me", so I just went with...

The Basics

Rewind to January 2008...
Many people have asked me "why a world tour?" The first answer that comes to my mind is "why not?" but then, that's a bit rude, isn't it? The answer really is that I have always wanted to. And now was by all means the very best moment to go for it: a new chapter in my life, no husband (anymore), no babies, no job, no debt, no mortgage, no nothing to tie me down anywhere, some savings in the bank, and, most important of all, friends all over the world. How could I possibly dream of a better way to start my new life? So I began to make a list of all the people I know, directly or indirectly; looking at the map, I added a few countries I could not pass up even though I did not know anyone there, and I made up...

The Ideal Itinerary

That's where it starts to get tricky and a tad frustrating, because of course, no round-the-world (RTW) ticket can match exactly your dreams. So after weeks of internet browsing, hours on the phone with travel agent extraordinaire Oliver from Westernair Travel, some hair gone gray, and a little less in the bank, I finally had my itinerary booked, on April 30, the very day I had my Freedom party, talk about an adrenaline shot...

Knowing that dates are totally flexible, that the itinerary may be changed for a fee, and the ticket is valid for up to a year, here is the happy offspring of my dreams and the actual flights offered by the OneWorld Alliance:

May 21: Paris - Capetown
May 28 or 29: Road along the coast (Garden Route) up to Durban and Pretoria, where I meet with a good friend.
June 9-14: Safari to Kruger Park, then on to Mozambique, where I catch up with Pretoria's friend in Maputo.
June 14-22: Mozambique

June 23: Johannesburg - Hong Kong, staying with an old friend

July 1: starting a long overland journey through South East Asia... Starting with Vietnam, Hanoi, magical Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City, then upstream on the Mekong river to Cambodia's Pnomh Penh, Siem Reap (Angkor Vat and co. temples), and Thailand, Bangkok, Chiang Mai (possibly a one-week massage course!), then down the Thai peninsula, with a few days of indulgence in the Phuket area, Penang, Kuala Lumpur. Towards the end of August, I'll fly to Jakarta, then overland to Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and the sunrise hike up Mount Bromo, then a hop to Bali, and fly back to Hong Kong. If time allows, a "hop" to Beijing and Shanghai...

October 7: Hong Kong - Cairns, overland down to Brisbane.
October 18: Brisbane - Noumea, meeting with a friend and a friend's cousin in a Kanak tribe
October 25: Noumea - Sydney

November 3: Sydney - Auckland, overland down to Wellington.
November 26: Auckland - San Francisco, spending Thanksgiving with friends.

December 3: San Francisco - Cancun, staying with a friend in Merida then another in Chiapas
December 22: Cancun - Panama, spending Christmas and New Year's Eve with a rock star friend...

January 1: Panama - Lima, enjoying my NYE hangover on the plane, staying with friends' family. From Lima, I'll go on the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu, then overland to Lake Titicaca, where I will likely turn 30, over to La Paz.
January 28: La Paz - Santiago (several people have recommended that I do that part overland, so this might change...)

February 3: Santiago - Punta Arenas (just on the Magellan strait), hikes through the glaciers and maybe make it to the end of the world in Ushuaia (650kms further down...)
February 13: Punta Arenas - Puerto Montt, where I will start an overland journey through the Argentinian border, Bariloche, up to Mendoza, Buenos Aires, Rosario, Iguacu Falls, crossing the Brazilian border then on to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro

March 23: Rio de Janeiro - London, end of the story (but given my ticket is valid until May 20, well, you get the picture!)

Your questions

"How much does all this cost?"

Good question too... Well, as it stands, using the 6-continent One World Alliance ticket, possibly the most expensive on the market, with all taxes and fuel surcharges, it amounted to 3.800 Euros. Still cheap for such a trip.
And what about the other expenses?
Backpackers insurance: 460 Euros
Vaccinations: 260 Euros
Pharmacy: 200 Euros (for Lariam and a couple of other things, the remaining medication was covered by French social security, thank God for that!)
Equipment: 700 Euros (I had to buy everything except the backpack, and it does add up...)
Camera and accessories: 450 Euros (I chose the Panasonic Lumix FZ-18, a small jewel, x18 zoom, and the best possible quality for a minimum size and weight)

So the budget before departure amounted to 5.870 Euros. I roughly estimated a 40 Euros/ day average expense during the trip, for an approximate total budget of 18.500 Euros (no this is not a scientific calculation, I know).
If you come to think about it, it is probably less than what you spend in a year living in Paris. And anyways, "the journey is worth more, much more than the gold!" as my musical crush of the moment, Eric Bibb, puts it...

"What's in your backpack, and how much does it weigh?"

• sleeping bag and sleeping silk sheet

All this fits in the 50 liter backpack. It's full but not overloaded, and it weighs exactly 12,5 kgs (after removing sunblock, and mosquito repellent bottles).

As I take off for the final part of the first trip (Johannesburg to Capetown), I will try to answer a question I have heard often:
"But are you travelling alone?"
The answer is both yes and no. I'm embarking on this journey on my own, just as I have always wanted to (even when I was married, deep down I always thought it would be better to do this alone). But I've planned my itinerary according to the people I know (except for Southeast Asia), so it's a safe guess to say that I won't be alone that much.

Additionnally, in the places where I didn't already have a contact, I will use the CouchSurfing network to find accommodation and connect with local friends. For those not familiar with the concept, couchsurfing (CS) is a network of 500.000+ people around the world who offer their couch to travellers as if they were friends of friends, or who just like to meet them and show them around, hang out... I signed up in February, so I would have time to familiarize myself with the system before taking off, and I ended up making friends with great people, Parisian hosts and their overseas guests, some of whom I will catch up with or visit during my trip. Before leaving for Capetown, I have already arranged accommodation with a 3D animator then a development researcher, a night out on the town with a bunch of CSers, and a drive around the city and surroundings. I'm not sure I would want to travel any other way now...

So, to answer the initial question: yes, I'm travelling on my own, and no, I won't be alone!

The other question I heard quite often has been
"What are you going to do when you come back?"
Good question. But I've decided to live one day at a time for a year. It is a luxury I won't be able to afford that often, and I intend to take full advantage of it. Even if I can imagine that I would love to remain in the tourism industry, there's no telling how, when or where for now...

Before the plane lands and my adventure starts for real, I would like to conclude by a heartfelt vote of thanks to you. Ever since I started dreaming and talking about this journey, you, my friends and family, have been nothing but supportive and encouraging, pushing me to take the leap and do this for real (and open this blog!). Et voilà finalement le premier article de ce blog de tour du monde que vous m'avez tous demandé depuis deux mois…Je suis dans l'avion qui m'emmène à Johannesburg, et je n'ai aucune idée de ce qui m'attend, essentiellement parce que je n'ai pas vraiment préparé ce voyage a la lettre. De façon inexplicable pour qui me connaît un peu (et j'en fais partie), je n'ai pas organisé consciencieusement, planifié et anticipé chaque détail de ce voyage qui doit durer une année. J'étais juste contente et heureuse de laisser "la vie m'arriver"…

Les bases

Revenons à janvier 2008…
Beaucoup m'ont demandé "pourquoi un tour du monde ?" La première réponse qui m'est venue à l'esprit, c'est "pourquoi pas ?", mais c'est un peu cru. La vraie réponse est que j'ai toujours voulu le faire. Et maintenant était de toutes façons le meilleur moment pour le faire : un nouveau chapitre de ma vie, pas (plus) de mari, pas d'enfant, pas de boulot, pas de dettes, pas d'hypothèque, rien pour me retenir nulle part, quelques économies à la banque, et, le plus important, des amis partout dans le monde. Comment aurais-je pu rêver une meilleure façon de recommencer ma nouvelle vie ?
Aussi ai-je commencé par faire une liste de tous ceux que je connais, directement ou indirectement ; en regardant la carte, j'ai ajouté quelques pays que je ne pouvais pas manquer, même si je n'y connaissais personne, et voila…

L'itinéraire idéal

C'est là que ça commence à être un peu délicat et frustrant, parce que, bien sûr, aucun ticket de tour du monde ne correspond exactement à vos rêves. Donc, après des semaines de recherche sur internet, des heures au téléphone avec l'extraordinaire agent de voyages Oliver, de Westernair Travel, quelques cheveux devenus blancs, et quelques réserves fondues à la banque…j'ai finalement réservé mon itinéraire, le 30 avril 2008, le jour même de la fête de ma "Freedom Party", tu parles d'une poussée d'adrénaline !

Sachant que les dates sont totalement flexibles, que l'itinéraire peut être modifié moyennant quelque supplément, et que le ticket est valable pour un an, voici l'heureux hybride de mes rêves et les vols qui me sont aujourd'hui fournis par la One World Alliance :

Mai 21 : Paris - Capetown
Mai 28 ou 29 : La route la long de la côte (Garden Route, Wild Coast) vers Durban et Pretoria, où je rencontre une amie.

Juin 9-14 : Safari à Kruger Park, puis le Mozambique, où je retrouve l'amie de Pretoria à Maputo.
Juin 14-22 : Mozambique
Juin 23 : vol de Johannesburg à Hong-Kong, où je vais chez une amie de longue date.

Juillet 1er : départ pour un long voyage à travers l'Asie du sud-est… En commençant par le Vietnam, Hanoi, la magique baie d'Halong, Ho Chi Minh City, la remontée du Mékong vers Pnomh Penh, au Cambodge, Siem Reap (Angkor Vat et temples autour : il paraît qu'il y en a environ 400 !), et la Thaïlande : Bangkok, Chieng Maï (peut-être un cours d'une semaine de massages !), puis la descente de la péninsule thaïe, avec quelques jours de vacances à Phuket, Penang, Kuala Lumpur. Vers la fin d'août, je prendrai un vol pour Jakarta, puis je rejoindrai par terre Bandung, Yogjakarta, Surabaya (montée au Mont Bromo pour le lever du soleil), puis un saut à Bali, et je rejoindrai Hong-Kong par avion. Si j'ai le temps, un saut à Pékin et ShangaÏ…

Octobre 7 : Hong-Kong-Cairns ; puis, par terre vers Brisbane.
Octobre 18 : Brisbane-Nouméa, où je rencontre un ami, et la cousine d'une amie, dans une tribu kanake.
Octobre 25 : Nouméa-Sydney

Novembre 3 : Sydney-Auckland ; puis par terre vers Wellington.
Novembre 26 : Auckland-San Francisco, pour passer "Thanksgiving" avec des amis.

Décembre 3 : San Francisco-Cancun (Mexique) chez un ami à Merida, puis une autre à Chiapas.
Décembre 22 : Cancun-Panama, pour passer Noël et le jour de l'an avec un pote rockstar…

Janvier 1er : Panama-Lima, gueule de bois dans l'avion, et arrivee dans la famille d'un ami. De Lima, je suivrai la Route Inca vers le Macchu Picchu, puis, par terre, vers le lac Titicaca, d'où je rejoindrai La Paz.
Janvier 28 : La Paz-Santiago : plusieurs personnes m'ont recommandé de faire le trajet par terre, , il pourrait donc y avoir un changement à ce vol prévu…

Février 3 : Santiago-Punta Arenas (juste sur le Détroit de Magellan), randonnées à travers les glaciers et peut-être aller jusqu'au bout du monde à Ushuaia (à 650 km au sud, quand même…)
Février 13 : Punta Arenas-Puerto Montt, d'où j'entamerai un voyage par terre à travers la frontière argentine, Bariloche, jusqu'à Mendoza, Buenos Aires, Rosario, chutes d'Iguacu, en traversant la frontière brésilienne vers Sao Paulo et Rio de Janeiro

Mars 23 : Rio de Janeiro- Londres, fin de l'histoire (mais puisque mon ticket reste valable jusqu'au 20 mai 2009, vous voyez le topo !)

Vos questions

Combien ça coûte, tout ça ?

Bonne question, celle-là aussi…Bon, et bien, en utilisant le ticket One World Alliance, qui pourrait bien être le plus cher sur le marché, avec toutes les taxes et surcharges pour le carburant, c'est revenu à 3 800 €. Encore pas trop cher pour un tel voyage.

Et les autres dépenses ?
Assurance du "routard" : 460 €
Vaccinations : 260 €
Pharmacie : 200 € (pour Lariam et autres choses, le reste étant couvert par la Sécurité Sociale française, dieu merci !)
Équipement : 700 € (j'ai dû tout acheter, sauf le sac à dos, mais ça s'accumule…)
Caméra et accessoires : 450 € (j'ai choisi le Panasonic Lumix FZ-18, un petit bijou, x18 zoom, la meilleure qualité possible pour une taille et un poids minimum).

Si bien que le budget avant départ se monte à 5 870 €. J'estime globalement à 40 € par jour en moyenne les dépenses durant le voyage, pour un budget total d'environ 18 500 € (ceci n'est pas un calcul scientifique, je sais). Si vous y pensez, c'est probablement moins que ce que vous dépensez en une année pour vivre à Paris. Et, de toutes façons, "le voyage vaut beaucoup plus, beaucoup plus que l'or", comme le dit Eric Bibb, mon maître musical du moment…

Mais qu'y a-t-il dans ton sac à dos et combien pèse-t-il ?

- sac de couchage et drap de couchage en soie
- moustiquaire
- chaussures de marche, sandales de marche, chaussures de ville (confortables)
- serviette
- maillots de bain et paréo
- 1 chemise, 3 tee-shirts, 3 débardeurs (probablement plus que nécessaire)
- 1 robe de plage, ou de soirée, ou pour pays et/ou temps chaud
- sous-vêtements et chaussettes
- 1 paire de chaque : 2 en 1 jupe/short ; capris (?) ; 2 en 1 pantalon/short
- veste 3 en 1, polaire
- pharmacie
- un simple minimum pour la toilette (oui, même sur la route, je reste une fille…)
- Ipod et chargeurs de téléphone, adaptateur international
- Boussole, ficelle, mousquetons, canif multi-usage, cadenas, lampe frontale, kit de couture
- 1 petit sac à dos de 20 litres avec "poche-chameau" (pour réserve de boisson) pour petites randonnées

Tout ça tient dans le sac à dos de 50 litres. Il est assez plein, mais non surchargé, et il pèse exactement 12,5 kg (après avoir enlevé la creme solaire et l'anti-moustiques!).

Et dans mon sac à main, il y a :

- passeports
- permis de conduire (français, et international)
- billets d'avion
- livret de vaccinations
- papiers d'assurance
- copie de tout dans un sachet étanche
- poche secrète pour l'argent
- masque oculaire, bouchons d'oreilles, et oreiller de voyage

Et, je suis désolée, je ne suis pas allée jusqu'à peser mon sac à main !

Alors que je suis en train de décoller pour ce qui est définitivement la première partie de mon voyage, je vais essayer de répondre à une question que j'ai souvent entendue :

"Mais tu voyages seule ?"

La réponse est oui et non. Je m'engage dans ce voyage de mon propre chef, comme je l'ai toujours voulu (même quand j'étais mariée, au fond de moi j'ai toujours pensé que ce serait mieux de le faire seule). Mais j'ai organisé mon itinéraire en fonction des personnes que je connaissais (sauf en Asie du sud-est), donc c'est un pari assez sûr de dire que je ne serai pas aussi seule que cela.

En outre, dans les endroits où je n'avais pas vraiment de contacts, j'utiliserai le réseau du "couchsurfing" pour trouver à me loger et entrer en contact avec des amis locaux. Pour ceux qui ne sont pas familiers avec ce concept, CouchSurfing est un réseau de plus de 500 000 personnes dans le monde entier qui offrent leur hospitalité à des voyageurs comme s'ils étaient amis d'amis, ou simplement se plaisent à les rencontrer, leur montrer leur environnement…Je me suis inscrite en février, pour avoir le temps de me familiariser moi-même avec ce système avant de décoller, et j'ai fini par me faire des amis avec des gens supers, des hôtes parisiens et leurs invites, dont certains que je retrouverai ou chez qui j'irai lors de mon voyage.
Avant de partir à destination de Capetown, j'ai déjà organisé un hébergement avec un animateur 3D, puis un chercheur en développement, une sortie de nuit en ville avec une équipe de "couchsurfers", et un tour en voiture de la ville et des environs. Je ne suis pas sûre aujourd'hui que je voudrais voyager autrement…

Donc, pour répondre à la question initiale : oui, je voyage seule, et non, je ne serai pas seule !

Que vas-tu faire quand tu rentreras ?
Bonne question. Mais j'ai décidé de vivre au jour le jour pendant un an. C'est un luxe que je ne pourrai pas me permettre si souvent, et j'ai bien l'intention d'en tirer tous les avantages possibles. Même si je peux imaginer que j'adorerais rester dans l'industrie du tourisme, pour l'instant, je ne sais pas comment , où et quand…

Avant que mon avion n'atterrisse et que mon aventure commence pour de bon, j'aimerais conclure en vous remerciant tous du fond du cœur. Depuis que j'ai commencé à rêver et parler de ce voyage, vous, mes amis et ma famille, vous n'avez fait que me soutenir et m'encourager à faire le saut et passer à la réalité (et ouvrir ce blog !). Grâce à vous, à ce que vous m'avez dit, vos idées et vos contacts, votre amour et amitié, et votre soutien, je suis partie pour l'expérience d'une vie. Vous voyagez avec moi dans mon cœur.
