Today was race day. Team Discovery (our team) was out for gold and a piece of the pie aka the prize money. All morning the bikes where tweaked and prepped for what would be a monsterous ride. 22km of daunting hills, dirt and competiton oh my!
At about 4pm we did a ride down to a place called Busters Sports Centre where as we would start. There where about 50 other riders with 2 races to take place with a 5 minute gap. We registered ourselves and WHAM 5 minutes to race time...GAME ON.
The race itself was good. Lots of competitiveness which made it a whole lot more fun; my fitness has come on a bit since our practice runs; but it was still grueling... sadly I recorded a time off DNF...did not finish... it was really annoying; heres what happened...
With about 2-3km to go I was in third place; the 2 people ahead of me had gone down a huge hill and as I came down the hill they where no where to be seen. I relied on staying behind them as I didn't know the course thus I didn't know where to go! I
Team Maple!Representing in the gold jerseys; a force not to be messed with.
carried on following the road I was on but apparently I was meant to go down a dirt track. I was lost. I kept riding untill I realised I didn't know where the heck I was. Race Over. Now I had another problem; where do I go, I had ridden on a bit from where I was meant to go (but not knowing at this point). I decided it would be wise to ask a friendly looking folk with no teeth and a dirty looking bag that seemed to hold all his personal items... a homeless zimbabwean.. he should know where to go. He insisted that I walk with him into the bush as its a shorter way and he can show me where to go from there. Haha... I told him that I looked forward to our date and rode off. After riding aimlessly and asking 5 odd people I decided I would just head down a dirt track in hope as it was getting a wee bit dark; as I entered the dirt track this wondering rodent known as a Pit Ball decided I looked interesting and ran upto me. This thing looked mean and this presented the first time I have actually been scared on my trip; I mean what do you do if a huge, mean looking dog starts attacking you in the bush? Run? Clout it around the ear? Smile? 3 minutes of the dog sniffing me later and I was on the road again unharmed but still lost. I finally got myself back onto a road and asked for directions again; they sent me one way my cousin Ashley LUCKILY was driving on the same road and pulled me over; telling me the race finish was completely the other way! So I headed that way and finnally finished the race.
Oh well I guess it makes it a whole lot more interesting.
That night we all went down to the pub and let loose after the strenuis race! I'm never drinking Zambuka with my cousin again :/
