The work is complete and now all but one of our team members will experience something Africa is known for. A photo safari. We organized a non-Habitat sponsored safari extension to Zambia. We arranged group transport to neighboring Zambia. Presenting paperwork and exchanging money for visas in both directions is part of the formalities of crossing the border from Malawi to Zambia. Once in Zambia, it was noticeable to me that the economic conditions in Zambia are somewhat better than in Malawi. The roads are better, there appears to be more shops, the people you see alongside the road are is less ragged attire than in Malawi. We saw more ‘decent’ housing, but there was no shortage of substandard, traditional mud & thatch huts as well. Six hours after starting out, we arrived at the Marula ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311 This was going to be our last set of game while at Wildlife Camp. The morning drive had some very interesting things going on but the night drive was was of our peak wildlife experiences. While on the morning drive we did get to see a martial eagle very clearly and a grey hooded woodpecker who is a summer visitor. We did see a mother lion who had hidden her cubs and they did not come out until after we had driven off! While we were in the area, there were three or four hyena in the area and we think they were also looking for the young cubs. We continued on and saw a impala looking very intently at a space at a distance. BJ was convinced there was a leopard in the ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311We did our morning walk and then decided we really needed to do another night drive and signed up for the drive this evening. Went back and did our chores and got ourselves a dinner for the evening. We had put our last steak on to cook doing our walk so were going to fix a steak sandwich.Dingi was our driver for the evening and we were kidding him that John his spotter had told us we were going to find Ginger, the very light colored lion. Got signed in at the gate and noticed that several people were stopping right past the bridge. What do you know!? As we crossed the bridge saw what the commotion was and it was Ginger laying in the sand sound asleep.Took several pictures and then carried on ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311The sad story of trying to keep up with all the stories and activities going on. Behind in working on the stories and having a tough time with getting a good signal this year but anyway, the stories will get shorterToday we did another am/pm game drive and as usual got to see some incredible things. There was a nice group of elephants taking dust baths on the Flatdog side of the river. After watching them for a a period we came across a small herd of buffalo with their young grazing. Glad to see them because they have been further north and this is an indication they are moving back into the area and that also means the lions will be following.Another one of those magic sightings of the elephant lifting up to get ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Went for our morning walk and saw two giraffe at a distance on the drive into the camp. When we got over to the lagoon side, Thomas, the gardener that morning walked out into the bush and found the giraffe heading over to the lagoon and we got to see them moving over there.Decided to have breakfast at the restaurant and relax and enjoy the view. Walked back to the campsite in time to see two young puku jump from the park side to the barren island between the park and Wildlife camp. Roy, the motorcyclist and ourselves wondered whatever possessed them to do this. Seeing them jump to the island was pretty awesome. They seemed to have leapt at least 20 feet into the air.We could tell they were kind of wondering themselves. ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311As we mentioned in an earlier story, our morning routine begins with a cup of coffee on the bluff overlooking the river at our campsite. We are checking out the sights and sounds along the river and hoping to see a leopard or other predator across the river. Well, this morning we did! Robert was looking and then exclaims, "there is a leopard near the brush pile!" Check it out and sure enough it is there sitting there and looking fairly disinterested. Laura goes and tells the people in the overland truck what we have sighted and they all come running over to see the leopard. We get to watch it for awhile, and then it gets up and moves further down the bank and strikes a pose for Robert by sitting down with paws ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Signed up for another day of game drives and had Dingi as our guide in the morning. We were joined with two girls from one of the overland trucks. As with most of the morning drives, we saw a lot of general game as we rode around.Warthog family group, wooly necked stork, and some tracks of the wild dogs but not sightings of them at the moment. One of the best sightings for that morning was when we came around a corner and there was a small lagoon with a massive hippo in it that lifted his front legs up out of the water as though he was checking us out and did not like us in his space. We also saw a Bateleur family of two adults and one juvenile flying about and then ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Fairly low key day after our bicycle ride but did do a two loop walk. Did some nice meals as well but not sure what they are because we are behind in keeping up with the stories. The nicest part of the day was in the evening when a "tower" of giraffe came down across the open plains and headed down to the water. Something kept spooking them because they would head to the water and then turn and run back and they never did come all the way to the water. We had some new neighbors, Charles and Catherine who are another English couple spending a year traveling in Africa. They had made some nice additions to their Land Rover including a water purifier and shower spray that operated off the back of the truck. ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Potifer found two bicycles that had working brakes and gears and so we were ready for an adventure. After a brief session on how to behave while riding, and what to do if we saw an animal and that Laura would always be in the middle we were ready to go. He also said he would be in the lead most of the time and we should ride single file.Set off from the camp and had not gone very far when we found leopard scat on the road in two places that was very fresh. Looked around to see if we could see someone lurking nearby and were glad when the all clear was signaled!Took the road toward the Kapani Lodge and stopped at the Chinzombo Lagoon. Walked down to the water and saw ... read more

Geo: -12.8546, 31.311Decided to do a three mile loop around the camp to get ready for our bike ride with Potifer. Of course we stop and visit with everyone as we walk along which makes the walk even more pleasant. We are having a braii with Jason and Lisa tonight with some of the steaks we got from the South Africans. While we were walking, all of a sudden, two of the hippos that had been facing off with each other all of a sudden started chasing each other in these giant leaps into the water, breach and then dive again. They really looked like whales to us! Watched them for awhile and then the show was over. Worked on travel stories in the afternoon and then one of the workers came to get us because there ... read more
