What an amazing, incredible day! Visiting Victoria Falls was an unforgettable experience. We walked along paths close to the falls with wonderful views of the River Zambesi thundering over the edge with a drop of over 100 metres. There was a fog like mist and water spray just the same as a cloud in the sky. We got absolutely drenched crossing a small footbridge near the falls. It was like being in a massive rain shower. There were superb views of the Victoria Falls Bridge built by Cleveland Bridge engineering, Darlington UK. Mosi-Oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, certainly did not disappoint. In the evening we ended our African holiday with a sunset cruise on the River Zambesi. We saw hippos and crocodiles and did some bird watching whilst enjoying a cocktail sundowner.... read more

Our next part of the trip would take us from Malawi's capital, across the border at Mchinji and into Zambia. We set off from Lilongwe at 6.30am (a lie in compared to previous days!). The border crossing was straight forward. As a lucky holder of an Irish passport, I didn't have to pay for a Zambian visa, much to the British passport holders' annoyance. Joe (also an Irish passport holder) and I sniggered in a corner heeheeheeee. From the border we headed for South Luangwa National Park. South Luangwa is so named because of the river that runs through it: the Luangwa river. It rises in north eastern Zambia and flows south for 800km through the Luangwa valley. It was now at the end of rainy season, so the river was full to the brim. Ox-bow ... read more

This year’s grand tour takes me to Zambia and Georgia. Not the most obvious pairing of countries to visit on one trip, but having missed Ireland’s previous match against Georgia in 2014, I wasn’t going pass on Tbilisi this time. But before that though, there is a return to Zambia after three years to see the children of WONS Orphanage again. And so Thursday night I set off from Gatwick Airport in the company of Tommy Feely – legendary Ireland cheerleader, storyteller and, truth be told, the main benefactor on the orphanage – and arrived in Lusaka (via Dubai) at 14:35 the next day. Our hotel collected us and took us straight to The Best Western Lusaka Grand on the outskirts of town. Imposingly grand looking from the outside (complete with palm treed swimming pool in ... read more

We arrived at Victoria falls late afternoon and our camp was less than 1km to the actual falls. It was to be the last few nights we would spend with our current group and there was lots to see and do. We pitched our tents- this time there wasn't a speck of dust to be seen and there was even grass (a rare luxury). After a much needed shower we headed out for dinner. It was a buffet and we were able to try crocodile, warthog, buffalo, grubs and tripe! We decided to leave the tripe but got stuck into everything else. Our favourite was by far the warthog (sorry pumba!) we were also treated to local music and dance. Back at the camp it was early to bed as we had planned to go to ... read more

The flight from Johannesburg was quick and inexpensive. We met up with my friend John (see 2009 Quilotoa and Galápagos blogs) and his girlfriend Cristina and explored the falls area for a few days, fully aware that it is a very well beaten and expensive tourist track. Zambia and Zimbabwe now offer a dual visa for visiting both sides of the falls. Apparently you can go back and forth between the two repeatedly as long as you don't go to another country. Livingstone and Victoria Falls The town of Livingstone is surprisingly authentic, with plenty of shops and activity in town and then shanties and dirt roads surrounding, which I ran through and found to be safe and friendly, largely because most of the tourists seem to fly in and stay at extravagant camps in the ... read more

Wet Wet Wet- every inch, every piece of clothing, camera lenses steamed up, pruney shriveled fingers and toes and soaked from every single drip of rain and waterfall spray that battered us! This basically summarises the start of our honeymoon travelling from Livingstone in Zambia, over the boarder into Zimbabwe, through to Botswana and South Africa and ending in Cape town (basking in glorious sunshine!!). So, our initial plan was to fly into Livingstone and cross the border after a couple of days there, and then cross over to Zimbabwe and join our tour group, however thanks to a flight change, none of our connecting flights would have married up and we had to fly into Victoria Falls airport, then cross the border (by foot) into Livingstone, then cross back. Also, as we were advised that ... read more

Our week started exploring the beautiful Victoria Falls that borders Zimbabwe and Zambia (one of the world's seven natural wonders). The Falls are created by the mighty Zambezi river (Africa's 4th longest) and the power of the water pouring over its edge was evident as we got soaked from its mist! Even in the campsite, which was a couple of kilometers away, the constant drum of the Falls could be heard. Having previously whitewater rafted in Iceland and New Zealand (Donal) we were very excited to tackle the Zambezi river. It is renowned for its Grade 5 rapids...... "extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas". Not concerned we signed up but after our first Grade 5 rapid we were ready to go home! Completely overturned, fighting against the subsequent rapids, ... read more

Geo: -12.895, 31.9228Got to the campsite and there was a Welcome Robert and Laura sign on Campsite #7 which had reserved once we had bought our tickets. Got our tent set up, showered and headed over to the main restaurant for dinner and to see who was still around! The Typical Day at Wildlife CampAfter a night of the sounds of hippos, lions, owls, elephants, and ground hornbill we are usually awake by 5:30am to go fix a cup of coffee and sit out in front of our campsite and see what wildlife is up and moving about. This year because of the abundance of water, we saw quite a bit of bird life up and moving around. Some of the pleasant sightings were the ground hornbills and the yellow-billed stork. Lots of different wildlife over the ... read more
