Before I begin this blog entry I'd like blame any spelling/punctuation errors on the fact that I'm using an Arabic/French keyboard and consequentally many of the keys are in different locations to the 'usual'! I'm writing this from hot Tunisia. All the locals here still consider the weather to be quite cold and so many are walking aroung with coats and fleeces on! I, however, have already brought out the sunglasses, sun cream and mosquito spray. After my last blog entry from Genoa I headed to a village called Nervi. Put simply, it was gorgeous. Despite the chill, the sun was shining and the seafront promenade was populated by local families on afternoon strolls. I got stuck into an ice-cream whilst watching the world go by and for the first time, as I gazed across the ... read more

It was a smooth hour’s sailing from Sfax to the port of Sidi Youssef on the island of Gharbi, one of the two main islands in the Kerkennah archipelago. We were a little concerned about getting onward transport around the islands but we needn’t have worried. A fleet of yellow minibuses greets the arrival of the ferry and despite there being only one other passenger on our bus, we were not asked to pay more than the going rate to be taken to Sidi Frej on Chergui Island. A long straight road runs across Gharbi where it is very flat and dry with only palm trees to break up the view. After 10 minutes or so you cross a causeway over to Chergui which is the largest of the islands of Kerkennah. Before long our driver ... read more

We have finished work in Tunisia a little earlier than scheduled. The upside is that we now have far more time to travel! So, we took the train down to Sfax, a journey which took just two hours. On arrival we traipsed around almost every hotel in the guidebooks and ended up back in the first one we looked at! The Thyna was the best value we could find but still a bit more expensive than we had hoped for. Still, it was comfortable and very well located. Sfax is not a touristy city and while we were there we didn't see another tourist at all. Despite this, we didn't get hassled, even when we walked through the medina. It was interesting to see the traditional way of life in the souks without the interference of ... read more

It's hard to imagine Hammamet in the summer. When we stayed it was a sleepy town with very little night life. In the summer it's jam packed with tourists sunning themselves during the day and drinking themselves silly at night. We are pleased we went now! The city itself is nothing much to write home about. We had a nice wander around and admired the deserted beaches. Being quiet, we got quite a lot of hassle in the medina but it wasn't too bad. We also walked out to Villa Sebastian, the International Cultural Centre where we wandered around the botanical gardens and viewed the villa with its art gallery and lovely swimming pool. All in all though we didn't think Hammamet was worth a special journey. Unless of course you like good beer! The Brauhaus ... read more

The journey from Nabeul to Kelibia took us further up Cap Bon through some nice countryside. Once we got to Kelibia we were a little disappointed though. From the guidebook it sounded like a quaint little fishing village with a fortress built high on the hill above. In reality the town centre was quite busy and pretty much like any other town centre in the region. We walked along the road out towards the port and the fortress. On the way we called in at all of the hotels (3 of them!) hoping to find a decent price for one night. Sadly the prices were non-negotiable and the only cheap hotel was full! Instead we decided to have a brief look around and head off to Hammamet for the night. The port was not particularly attractive ... read more

On a Friday evening we took a louage (shared minibus-style taxi) out to Nabeul on the Cap Bon peninsula. It took us about 90 minutes to get there and we were soon settling into our hotel and deciding where to go for dinner! The Hotel Les Jasmins was nice, despite the dreadful music on their website! The nearby Restaurant Slovenia provided a beautiful meal for a pretty reasonable price considering the plush surroundings and the efficient smartly dressed waiters. Afterwards we declined to go for a drink in the bar as it was just too smoky. No no-smoking policy over here!! The next morning we had a very pleasant stroll down to the beach admiring some of the tiles on local houses along the way. The ancient Neapolis site seemed to be closed (in fact we ... read more

Not blogged for a while so we thought we would share some recent photos with you from our explorations of Sousse. In the medina you can visit the interesting fish market. Outside it, you can even see the starlings up for sale, a local delicacy at this time of year which we are yet to try!!! You can also get your hands hennaed if you wish or buy a carpet or a camel! Instead we visited an interesting museum where we learned a lot about the traditional wedding ceremony with intricate costumes worn by all. The museum was right in the centre of the medina in the heart of the city. Back home we usually stick to watching the English language TV channels on cable but we were quite taken by "Who Wants to be a ... read more
