Quick escape to Tunisia, and have just found out that we left snow and ice behind in England....spent the day on the beach yesterday, with the sea crashing restlessly at our feet, so can't say it was a mistake and great to be back in a country like this, the azar ringing down the lanes and streets.... its very slow here - very few internet cafes and hardly anyone gabbling into mobile phones, little if any hassle, few high rises - instead, a lot of small blue and white houses and beautiful studded wooden doors, the sea surrounding you and utterly spectacular sunsets every night - better by far than we'd hoped for!
Weve been to Yasmine Hammamet about an hour down the coast - avoid at all costs - that really is the Costa Brava of the area, although it is clean and very upmarket, even the souk and the medina are plastic and new, with not an ancient stone in sight!
Tommorow, well be in Nabeul which we had a quick visit to last night, for the Friday market - its a lovely old town, fabulous tiny streets and some impressive boulevards, but again, everything is slow,
relaxed...its absolutely another world - which I suppose is why were here.
Saturday, will be a long bus ride to Tunis, the capital, and Carthage ( got to get some history in somehow!) and to a little town, Sidi Bou Said, that we keep hearing about. Then it's back to Tunis for dinner and a few hours wandering until its time for our 4am flight to Frankfurt and then home to a winter of work, work, work for me....cant wait for that, of course :(
In the event, Kate managed to almost knock herself out when the boot of a taxi crashed down on her head and was walking around with a deep and very bloody cut on her head. She sat out Carthage - I didn't and it was beautiful. We had to get her fixed up at the airport...
