Wow! It's actually my last day in Togo! I have had my last breakfast and my last lunch and going to have my last dinner later. Have to say that the last couple of days have been fantastic. Two days ago another volunteer, Emilienne arrived, and it has been sooo nice to have some company. She is Swedish, but speaks amazing French and English, so she has been helping me a bit with the last little bits of translation. Antoine, Josie, Merveille and I went to the airport to welcome her, and I have to say it has been very nice not being the ONLY white person in the whole town, even if just for 2 days. Today is actually my birthday, but we celebrated it last night with a big BBQ with all of the ... read more

Well this week is a lot quieter than the previous 2. I think everything is slowly winding down until I go on Saturday, and Antoine doesn't want me to start on anything brand new as I won't be able to finish it. Still, the usual is carrying on. Having even longer morning meetings now - yesterday's was 7:15 until 1pm!!!!! That's A LOT of French!!!! I am still astonished by how organised these guys are. Even more so than work at home (sorry guys!). I just think that under the circumstances that they work, these guys do a fantastic job. Yesterday we had 3 people from the Miniterie de Santé come to do an evaluation of the work that PDH does. I was reminded of the audit that the London Leadership Strategy had a couple of ... read more

Well apologies for not having written for a couple of days, I have been working pretty hard over the last couple of days, and haven't managed to come to the internet café. But seeing as Saturday is finally here, I have managed to sneak away! 2 weeks into my little expedition. 1 week to go. I am definitely becoming more aclimatised to Togo. Getting into the rhythm of the day - waking up at 6:15, working til 12, sleep til 3, work til 5:30, sleep by 8. Still don't think I'm completely used to the heat though - this morning I went for a half hour walk around Avedji Cité, which is the area around the Social Centre. I got back at 9:30AM soooo hot and sweaty, and had to have my 2nd shower of the ... read more

Well I seem to be able to update this blog about ever other day, but no promises. Today is a relatively quiet day, so I managed to slip away for a couple of hours. Thank you again for all your lovely messages, and thanks Frankie for the MMMMASSSSSSIVE email. I had to pay for an extra hour in the internet café just to read it ;) I actually really enjoy my walk to and from the internet café. It is about half a mile from the Centre, and it is a very safe area, so I can walk on my own. I just set off with a water bottle and a few coins in my pocket - no bag on my back and not carrying anything worth anything. Suddenly every treats me differently. I have found ... read more

Well it hasn't been very long since my last update, but lots has happened, and I have nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon, so here I am. THE WEEKEND Friday night I helped clean up the centre, and then played games with Elolo (FINALLY FOUND OUT HOW TO SPELL HIS NAME!!!) in the evening. Taught him how to play Boxes - Emma and Sarah will know the game I mean, when you start with lots of dots on the page. And he taught me 2 Togolese games similar to drafts. Then yesterday we headed to the beach!! FANTASTIC day yesterday - headed of in a Togolese taxi yesterday, and suddenly memories of Morocco flooded back to me, because they try to fit in as many people as possible - 2 people on the front ... read more

Aww thanks guys for all your lovely messages!!!! So nice to receive them all. So I've been working for 4 days for PDH and it's VERY hard work. I go to bed at 7pm each night ABSOLUTELY exhausted. I think it is because I have to concentrate so hard when speaking and listening to people. I'm finding the language easier each day as I am getting used to the phrases that are used - Nous proposons au PDH de programmer un discuter avec le patient - hey hey! Impessed£$µ* (I can't find the question mark on this weird keyboard!!!) Well, let me describe my usual day - I wake up at 6:15 and have a 'shower', which is a bucket full of water thrown over me. Thanks Frankie, Sarah and Kev for begging me to have ... read more

Helloooo to everyone back home!!!! Apologies if I make any spelling mistakes - this is a very strange keyboard and all the letters are in the 'wrong' places. So I have finally made it here, after 4 months of planning, hundreds of pounds and thousnands of miles. I'm doing well, but VERY tired. The journey seemed to go ok. It was really interesting to see the mix of people getting on my plane at Gatwick - Arabs, Africans, English, French, German. Tripoli airport was amazing for people-watching too - there were loads of Libyan men dressed in long white tunics and with huge white tubans. I felt like I had walked into the English Patient set. Luckily I did not attract very much attention from anyone - they were all far too busy staring at the ... read more

Well I am heading off to Lomé, the capital of Togo, on the 7th March 2009, hoping to return on the 29th March. I am going to be volunteering for a charity called PDH Togo, both in their clinic and orphanage. Hopefully this will be a good means for everyone back home to follow what I am doing, and how I am getting on. Many of my friends know of my obsession with Africa, and have often made me refer to it as 'India', (no matter what country I am actually going to) to try and stem their annoyance at my ramblings. However, purely for the enjoyment I will get out of annoying my friends further with my rants, I will henceforth be referring to Togo, as Togo. Not India. I have read a few other ... read more

Today I left Lome, the capital of Togo, and came north to Kpalime. I struggled to find things in Lome worthwhile staying for. I went to a great sounding restaurant, which was quite dissapointing, I wondered arround everywhere looking for interesting architecture, and I found very little. I ended up staying two nights just outside of Lome, in this very eccentric plce called Chez Allice, in Aveposo, 12 east. A german couple, now middle aged, but with a very hippy sense of dècor, monkeys dogs, cats, parrot bat colony and the lot, were company to me and th other guests in the little straw thached bungalows. It was a chance find, I guess. For I got up in the middle of the night in Grand Popo, Benin, and this rather inhebriated Breton, with a fantastic mind, ... read more

Our first full day in Lomé got off to a good start. After my last entry, we were walking down the main strip and saw a sign for another hotel. We checked it out and took it right away. It's a nice, quaint place owed by a French expat. Clean, quiet and friendly. Finally we can relax. After moving out of out first hotel, we wandered down to La Grande Marcheé, really almost the same as the one in Accra. We had a wonderful 3 course meal, where Barry ate a Pigeon (Yuck). But it was probably one of the best meals I have had since we arrived in Africa. I had a crème bruleé appetizer made with sundried tomatoes and fresh basil. mmmm... This morning, he headed to La Marcheé des Fetisheurs... Or the Fettish ... read more
