Ok we know it’s been 6 weeks since out last entry and people want to know what has been happening since our half term break in Zanzibar, but we never seem to have much time to sit down and write, so sorry it has been a while. We are both well, and we are now on 2 weeks school holidays as the first term has finished. Rachel is a bit drained from a very full on term; she has been sick again, this time with an ‘amoeba’ (severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea) so has now totally sworn off meat. Report writing is quite arduous (as I guess it is for every teacher) but the reports then have to be translated into Kiswahili for the parents (English copies are for the school files and sponsors). As many of you know, we finally got our container about a month ago. We have been so busy putting things away that I have forgotten to update our blog. Things seem to be settling down a little, so hopefully I will have more time for updating!! We are still waiting on our car. Hopefully by next week we will have it. I am just going to post the pictures of us unloading our container. Mostly, because everyone has been emailing for pictures of the kids. :) I'll get busy on posting a "real" blog entry very soon. Love you all!!! John, Angie, Daniel, and Abby ... read more

...has been insightful. I have been busy since the moment I got here with my placement, cultural visits and the occasional evening out! I am pleased to report that I had my first glass of red wine last night at the bar next to our home-base and it tasted very good. I spend weekday mornings at the TUPO community centre in Tenguru. All the members there have HIV or AIDS. There are three volunteers at the centre so it is less intimidating than being the only mzungu (white person). We have primarily been teaching English to AIDS orphans at the day care. There are only 8 of the kids there at the moment because of the Easter holidays. I don't know how we will cope when the other 40 arrive in the next couple of ... read more

Hello Everyone, Thank you all for your prayers, especially as we made our way to Tanzania. We wanted to send a quick note to let you all know that we have arrived safely. We are all well, and are actually not feeling too tired, considering the lack of sleep that we've had. We were blessed wtih a noneventful trip, which is always a good thing. :} We were met at the airpport by several of the missionaries. Brent Richardson, John Hall, and Cory Hall were a big help in hauling our family and luggage back to Moshi. We are so appreciative of the Richardsons for opening their home to us, until we get settled. Hopefully we'll be able to post some pictures soon. Our love to you all! George and Joy... read more

The Real Africa Africa has two faces. There is the one Africa that is enchanting and mysterious where lions hide in the elephant grass, and the Maasai become men by killing those lions with nothing but their spears. There is the Africa where you can hike to the top of an active volcano at midnight and see the glow of the lava and feel the heat. There is the Africa where thousands of visitors come every year to see the Dark Continent for themselves, hoping to catch a glimpse of the magic that National Geographic is so good at capturing for the world to see. That Africa is here … it is advertised on just about every street. There are nearly as many safari touring companies here as any other business. You can pay to see ... read more

Last weekend I finally went on my first official safari in Africa! I joined up with my coworker Abdallah for a four-day visit to Saadani National Park and Saadani Safari Lodge, which is known for its unique location right on the shore of the Indian Ocean (aptly summarized in its slogan … beach, river, bush) As you can imagine, it was breathtaking and beautiful, but before I get on with the story, just a reminder that only a few photos are posted here, but I have a lot more photos right here. So if you’re visually inclined, you might enjoy perusing the photos (more than 60) before reading on. I've also added a really nice route map to this entry. I was able to get the lay of the ... read more

Hi, all. Its been quite a while since my last entry! I’m kind of losing track of time here, but its being brought back into focus because soon I will be starting with Roots & Shoots (R&S). I just moved over to Jane (Goodall)’s house on 4 April. Soon I will have to split my time between R&S work and my usual hanging out at Tanzania House of Talent (THT). Last entry, I really felt I was crouching for the great leap forward (to quote my Mom). Hmmm….still crouching! My computer had a nervous breakdown, so Ruge sicked the Clouds FM technicians on it but unfortunately, in standard TZ fashion, what should have taken a day or less to fix has taken over two weeks. Almost daily I was told it would be ready tomorrow. ... read more

Easter provided us with the opportunity to get away for the 4 day break, but with distance and travel time here a big consideration we were never going to travel that far. We decided to go with 2 other teachers, Louise and Lauren, to the Usambara Mountains which are about half way between Arusha and Dar Es Salaam which is on the coast. We planned to do some hiking and relaxing in the mountains which by all accounts were a really beautiful region of Tanzania. The only way to get there is by bus and you have many options to choose from. We decided to go with a more reputable bus company and even opted for the luxury bus as compared to the ordinary bus, which would still have been a big step up from ... read more
