Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

June 21 - 25 I left Tad in Arusha and caught a 1hr prop flight to Zanzibar. We flew right by Mt. Kili. I landed in Old Town and headed to the northeast coast of the island. The island is mostly Muslim - my first experience with Muslim culture (it made the transition to 99% Muslim Morocco a little easier). On my ride to east side, I passed hundreds of school children going home for the day at 12:30pm. Their school system is so crowded they have two shifts, one from 7am - lunch and one from lunch to 7pm... [View Full Entry]

Trip to Nungwi Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar

Erst mal ein grosses ASANTE SANA (Dankeschoen) an ALLE die beim Blitzumzug geholfen haben und mir in den letzten Wochen in good old Germany eine grosse Hilfe waren! Danke, danke!

LUXUS
Flowers everywhere.....

Luckily we quickly found a truck complete with a great bunch of guys to take us from Cape Town up through Namibia, we decided to do things in style and armed with our pillows, duvet and large box of fine SA wine we set off....After shivering in Cape Town (see its not all beach weather you know!)we soon got to baking hot, barren and empty Namibia which really was like being on another planet. Our first major place was a the huge Fish River Canyon where after a stroll around we tucked into fine food and mugs of sherry! We ended [View Full Entry]

Legless in the Tropics

There are a few common Kiswahili Proverbs that go like this: 'Haraka haraka haina baraka', which means: In hurry, hurry there is no blessing. 'Pole Pole ndiyo mwendo', translated to: Slowly, slowly is indeed the proper path. And my favorite - 'Kawia ufike': Be late...but get there. At first read, these may elicit a little chuckle...but after a few days in east africa, you begin to realize the true nature of their origin and their infinite wisdom at summing up the rhythm of the African timetable. After leaving victoria falls, i traveled across the zimbabwe-zambia border i [View Full Entry]

Living it up Africa » Tanzania » Zanzibar » Zanzibar City
Hello everyone, This is just a quick cheating knd of update to let you know that I am still alive and enjoying Africa. I will keep this extremely brief, as it is not a true update. I have been workng on my blog on a fellow traveler's computer for the past 5 weeks, but have yet to work it so I can get it online. Soon, I hope. I am in Zanzibar now, and it is a beautiful, blue crystal clear island of amazing sunsets and spices and history. I have so far seen South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, [View Full Entry]

Me at Sunset

Just got back from Bewjuu (a town on Zanzibar island) this afternoon. We left Stone Town yestereday morning and drove to Jezani Forest. We first had a little info session on the forest and the conservation of it. Then we walked a little bit to an area that usually has Zanzibar Red Backed Colobus Monkeys. There were quite a few of them and they were sooooooo cute! =). There were babies jumping from branch to branch pretty much at eye level. Some monkeys even used Gabi's head as a go between. After that we went for a walk through the forest. [View Full Entry]

I'm in Zanzibar, Tanzania now! We left Mombasa on Mon. at 8 in the morning and had about an 11 hour bus ride to Dar es Salaam. The ride really wasn't that bad and for the most part the roads were pretty good. We had been planing to go clubbing our one night in Dar, but nothing was open Mon. night, so we just ended up sleeping. The following morning we had to just explore the city. It was pretty fun just walking around Dar. The city is so much cleaner than Mombasa. It's definetely a city that if I get [View Full Entry]

Once again united, the girls and I took the ferry to Zanzibar. They of course sat inside to enjoy the air conditioning while I stood on the back deck of the boat taking in the scene of the blue water of the Indian Ocean. It was a great two hour ride that landed us in Stone Town, the legendary trading center of Zanzibar. It did not take us long to find a suitable guest house (Annex Abdullah). The girls decided to rest a bit so I headed out to explore the narrow alleys and ancient buildings that makes up this exotic [View Full Entry]
