Our shack on the beach at Dar Es Salaam was across the harbor from the ferry docks so we had to cross on a short shuttle ferry then catch the fast ferry to Zanzibar. Fortunately it was Sunday morning so the shuttle was not handling work travelers. The fast ferry was fast and smooth and comfortable but very full. Zanzibar is two hours away across open ocean. Kayla and Richard stayed inside and watched Rowan Atkinson in The thin Blue Line on TV so the time passed. We arrived in Stonetown and were met by Hamim our guide. He had a waiting Mini bus to get to our hotel. Then we all agreed to take the "Spice Tour" for $25 each. This started with lunch at a local diner. It had good tasty hot food. Richard ... read more

Hello hello! DENTIST TRIP: Well we are on the island of Zanzibar currently and I am recovering from lasts nights emergency dental work. As it turns out my last filling somehow came loose when eating some caramels. I had managed to eat an astonishing 12 of them at the same time but I lost my filling in the mean time. Additionally I had another cavity near the first infected tooth, so at 9pm (after the dentist ate his evening meal as it is Ramadan now and everyone here is fasting all day long) we arrived to a rural dental clinic on Zanzibar. The dentist, speaking only a little English, sat me down and I opened my mouth. In about 5 seconds with no anesthetic he started drilling out my tooth. I was like WHOA and convinced ... read more

Been on the road nine months now and been moving faster then ever, attempting to see as much of east Africa as possible. Malawi flew by with highlights, truly enjoyed it, their experiencing many great people so friendly and generous. With a wonderful lake, fertile land and the stunning Mt. Mulanje. Justin and I were fortunate enough to be accompanied by some students from the USA that have been living their for a few months showing us an insider perspective. Introducing us to many of the local people and taking us through the village they our working in. A nice change of pace from the current touristy trail. From Malawi we took a 35 hour bus ride to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania where we met Justin's friend Stephanie that will be traveling with us for a ... read more

May 9th The ferry that would take the 8 of us to Zanzibar was to leave at 10:30 in the morning, so we were able to sleep in a bit more than normal. As a group we decided to take a couple taxis back over the bay and to the Zanzibar ferry, this was nice and quick, although a bit more expensive than going in a matatu. We waited for what seemed like an eternity to get on the ferry but the time did come. It took us about two and a half hours to get to Stonetown, the port for the island. My stomach wasn’t happy so it was nice to get some sleep on the side of the ship, with Wendy and Nico as my body guards. I was expecting Stonetown to be more ... read more

Sorry it's been sooo long! The last two weeks of my trip flew by as I did and saw so much. This entry is on my trip to Zanzibar and then I will follow-up with my trip to Northern Tanzania and my Safari adventure. I am probably going to write one more as a reflection because I am actually already home safe, but didn't want to leave you all hanging. So Zanzibar... After a few more days of volunteering, teaching english at the nursery school and playing soccer at orphanage, I was literally melting away at Bahari Beach (where I am). I can't even describe to you how hot it is here; you are literally always wet and sticky with sweat (it's great for my skin). As the weekend approached I planned to journey over to ... read more

Hi Everybody! For some reason it took 8 hours for the last 3 paragraphs of our last entry to load. We wished you all "Happy Holidays" at the end in case you read it before it finished loading. A New Year, already! Wow. . . You last heard from us after arriving in Dar Es Salaam. This entry contains 2 pages of pics so be sure to click over to page 2 at the bottom. There are 6 ferries that travel between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar Island. It's about a 2 hour trip on the fast ferry. The ferry holds about 200 people, really nice and new, couple of TV screens showing a movie during the trip. But. . . during the night a storm had blown in from the ocean with wind and rain. So ... read more

In the heat of the day, it feels as though my skin is melting off of my body. But I'm not complaining, I know that soon enough I'll be back in NYC shivering, wishing for a good sweat. I'm spending a few days in Stonetown before I head north for some beach time. I arrived here yesterday, exhausted after my early morning balloon ride, rising up with the sun over the Serengeti. (It was spectacular!!) I had a nice rooftop dinner under the stars at my hotel lastnight, and then went to bed nice and early. While I was eating (yummy spicy meatballs soaked in a curry sauce) the power went out all over the city for about 5 minutes...long enough to stare up into the night sky in awe, listening to the hoots and hollers ... read more

Hello all, We arrived safe in Tanzania yesterday and got the ferry over to Zanzibar this morning. It's hard to describe how tired we are after the 4.30am start this morning, 8 hour flight to Doha, 1 hour transfer and the 5 and a half hour flight from Doha to Dar Es Salaam. We slept very little on the plane because Qatar airline was fantastic and provided around 1000 entertainment options, FREE alcohol (as much as we wanted throughout the flight), films, music, games and TV options as well as regular meals which were really tasty but kept waking us up. I didn’t sleep at all last night either, strange insect and animal noises all night and mosque prayers in the morning as our first accommodation in Dar Es Salaam (the capital) was a wooden hut ... read more

I can’t believe that I started climbing the mountain almost 3 weeks ago! Things started out great. I met 2 of my team mates in the Amsterdam Airport and immediately we hit it off. Don from Cornwall Ontario is everything you would expect from a Construction Working, French Canadian Nurse. He had tons of energy and was always in good spirits. Michael James became like a little brother - he established the sibling relationship right off the bat! We were the young ones and made it our role to be the entertainment. After landing in Arusha we met the other 4 members of our team - Jim & Deb and Peter & Shirley. Deb became my comforting mother away from home and Shirley became a great friend. The men were very supportive and especially helpful later ... read more
