We were looking for an non-package tour type beach and Bwejuu beach fit. Eva found it by using Google maps and Google earth to look for nice beaches without large hotels anywhere nearby. Most of the large package tour groups end up on the northern tip of Zanzibar, and Bwejuu beach is on the east cost about half way down the island. It is an hour's drive from Stone Town and the airport. We were surprised by the tidal influence. During low tide, there is no water. Just mud puddles all the way to the reef. During high tide, the swimming is wonderful, since the reef stops the big breakers. So, this was our rendition of a white Christmas - hot white sand beaches instead of freezing white snow. The beach had several small cabin style ... read more

Anneke only would climb the Kilimanjaro if we went to Zanzibar afterwards to Relax on one of the beaches.......so we did! Arriving in Stone Town after a long busride from Arusha and then the fast ferry, it was a hassle to find a good place to sleep. Most places were full already so we ended up at this crappy place just outside the centre of Stone Town. At night we went to the Forodani Gardens, along the shore, It is a great place with many food stalls and half the population of Stone Town and almost all tourist will gather there in the evening. Great place to eat fresh seafood.....but with me being vegetarian and Anneke not liking seafood we were not the biggest buyers of the streetfood. We had an OK meal but the atmosphere ... read more

We just returned from Bwejuu, a small village on the east coast yesterday. It was amazing! Somehow we managed to get a reservation at Bahari Beach Village, a resort that isn't even officially open yet because the ownership has just changed. We were the only guests and therefore we were waited on hand and foot. Our bungalow was located literally 10 feet from the ocean and durning the day we searched for shells and worshipped the sun. The beaches in the US have no where near the amount of variety of shells that the east coast of Zanzibar has. We found twirly ones, straight ones, big ones (one the size of my hand, just right there on the beach), small ones, white ones and yellow ones. We spent hours cleaning out the shells to make sure ... read more

Bwejuu, Zanzibar Island (East side) I liked the beaches on the East side of Zanzibar. Very quiet beaches...you get the whole beach to yourself. Especially good for a nice stroll in the afternoon around sunset. And the best part, these are quiet fishing villages so you really get to get a taste of local culture instead of getting swarmed by touristy traps in Stone Town. Any local fisherman will take you out to the coral reef from the beach for about $10 for 2 ppl. The reef is ok...its no Great Barrier Reef though. This video will really give you a good idea of the beach and Changu Island's Giant Tortoise Sanctuary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WS4O8j561cI Changu (Prison) Island - Giant Tortoise Sanctuary and Snorkeling: The Giant Tortoises are Changuu Island's most famous inhabitants, and are to be found ... read more

Greetings from Africa! We made it to Zanzibar and are having an amazing time!!! It is soooo beautiful here! Pictures do not do this place justice. The people, the ocean and the food are perfect. We have made many new friends with locals, French and a kind South African whose computer I am currently using so I do not have much time to write, but I wanted you to know that we are well! We wish you were here. We are staying at an awesome "resort" called Mount Zion. All they play on the stereo is reggae...it is just our pace! Tony is out swimming in the Indian Ocean, and I don't know how to post our pictures. I just wanted to say Jambo! - Hi! - while we have the opportunity to write from a ... read more

After the hassle of Stonetown, the quiet beaches of Bwejuu, east Zanzibar were more than welcome. Peter and I almost lost our minds when we arrived. Honestly we didn't take the smiles off our faces for the first 3 hours we were there. With only a few tourists and miles of turquiose water, coupled with the nicest beach bungalow I've ever seen... we couldn't have been happier! We spent 3 days here lazing around, drinking beer and wine and snorkling. There was always a breeze so the insects that have become the bane of my exisitence didn't even have the stamina to resist the breeze ahhhh heaven.... read more

New Years in Paje and Bwejuu Hop in a dallah dallah and head to the beach again - Paje here we come. Squeezed into the back of a Zanzibari dallah dallah surounded by deisel containers, bags of coconut husk and bananas is THE way to travel. It's cheap and very fast and you get to meet the people of Zanzibar (OK, we were trying to make up for splashing out on taxis to / from Matemwe). En route we discovered that the Seven Seas wasn't in Paje but was actually in Bwejuu, a small village about half an hour's walk up the beach. We were dropped off at the side of the road and weaved our way between more coral rag buildings and found a deserted Seven Seas, it's optimistically dug swimming pool unfinished and unfilled. ... read more
