Footprints on the beach, Bwejuu
Watch the Youtube video link on this entry for a better experience. Bwejuu, Zanzibar Island (East side)
I liked the beaches on the East side of Zanzibar. Very quiet beaches...you get the whole beach to yourself. Especially good for a nice stroll in the afternoon around sunset.
And the best part, these are quiet fishing villages so you really get to get a taste of local culture instead of getting swarmed by touristy traps in Stone Town.
Any local fisherman will take you out to the coral reef from the beach for about $10 for 2 ppl.
The reef is ok...its no Great Barrier Reef though.
This video will really give you a good idea of the beach and Changu Island's Giant Tortoise Sanctuary:
Changu (Prison) Island - Giant Tortoise Sanctuary and Snorkeling:
The Giant Tortoises are Changuu Island's most famous inhabitants, and are to be found nowhere else in East Africa. Not indigenous to continental Africa, the original tortoises were brought from Aldabra in the Seychelles in an effort to extend the Tortoise conservation efforts.
We fed a bunch of turtles ...one of them was 185 years old !! (that means he was around when your great-grandfather was walking around in baby diapers!).
That particular turtle weighed over 300 pounds.
