Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

We've all been laughing at the kids comments and quotes as we are watching them experience a different culture and way of life here in Africa! Garrett's infamous daily quote is: "Well, you don't see that everyday!" but the funny thing is, he says it every day! You're always seeing something new when you drive down the streets here in Arusha. Something, that catches your eye, makes you go "hhhhhmmmmm" , somthings make you laugh and some things make you cry. There are times when your patience is tried and there are time when you learn what life is really all [View Full Entry]

from the missionary children in Tanzania
Love the little children! The end of a long exciting month is finally upon us! With it being Halloween today the missionary kids decided to dress up in costumes for last night's devotional over at The Smelser's house. Dr. Danny & Nancy have been such a blessing to have around. This is their last week in country here with us, please be praying for them as they return home this coming Sunday- Monday! The Kids were all just precious and had a great time parading through the living room sharing with all the adults just who, or what they were supposed [View Full Entry]

Arusha had it's Ladies Seminar, We had one man baptized through the House to Housestudies that the men were doing, Brent drove to Kenya to sign papers for the container, and the kids and I went to our first ever Rugby game What a day! The ladies seminar went great! We had about 42 ladies there, studying about women's roles in the church, and it was wonderful! Desdery (one of our local evangelissts) and Stephanie did a great job of setting it all up. Then Desdery, Stephanie, Neema, Shasta, Grace, and myself all taught different lessons throughout the day covering [View Full Entry]

Amazing things you see
theres always something amazing that you see as your driving down the streets here.... People crippled, walking, moving animals, all in the down pour of the tanzanian rains...
The Short rains of Tanzania have slowly started to begin! We have been having a little rain each day this week, up until today! For two days in a row it just poured down... It made for a hard time trying to get the laundry to dry on the line, and did quite a number on the roads! As you can seein the pictures! We drove over to Elly & Neema Martin's house on Saturday to pick up their family to come over for dinner, and it was a messy trip! I took these pictures on the way over there [View Full Entry]

We've been taking picture of all the beautiful flowers we've seen since we have been here and I thought I would share a few of them with you! We have internet connected here at the house now so we're back online and would love hearing from all of you! We had our first group Bible study here at the house tonight with all the missionary families... there were 20 of us total here, with no visitors... amazing! Its nice to have such a great team of missionaries here working together side by side and having the fellowship with each other. We [View Full Entry]

We Got Plenty of Room!
We Got Plenty of Room!
The efforts of several got this 6 foot roll of batting on the truck!!
An empty room, an empty refrigerator (wait, that doesn’t really mean anything at my house), and an empty house are all that’s left. Two years of preparing has found itself knocking at the door. It seemed like such a long time to wait, and now it is here. Thursday the 12th, a group of wonderful friends from Pinewood (our home congregation) helped us load the container of our household possessions so it could make its way to Tanzania. We should teach a class on how to pack - because I think we accomplished putting the proverbial square peg into a round [View Full Entry]

Off We Go!

It was a hot and humid September morningwhen I was picked up from the Heron Hotel in Nairobi by the bright yellow Absolut Africa truck. Ahead of me awaited 28 days of wild life adventures, campsite bonfires, beautiful beaches and safaris overlanding through five African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe). My home for the next four weeks is a small safari coloured two person tent, my bed a thin thermarest and my vehicle a a big yellow purpose-built truck - complete with sound system, book shelf, lockers and chilly bins. Shortly after boarding the truck I was introduced [View Full Entry]

Warning: its a long one! But you must get to the end-its the best part!! Alright, I know its been ages since I’ve posted, and a while since the hike. Life has been super hectic here, I climbed Kili from the 18th-26th of September, and then erik was here visiting from the 30th to the 13th of October, and we were much too busy travelling and exploring for me to get to a computer, but that’s another blog! I’ve received many emails asking for the story of the climb and pics, so here it goes. First and most important, we were [View Full Entry]

doing well for someone with malaria!
We decided to escape Moshi for a few days to give Dani a chance to recuperate in some semblance of peace and quiet, not from the malaria, but instead the large quantity of Larium she had to take in the space of 12 hours. Right from the outset though we were convinced we had made the wrong choice. Even after explaining to the mini bus tout where we wanted him to drop us we ended up way past our stop. We had to wait for the mini bus to fill up again for the return journey and when we did manage [View Full Entry]

Simple Satisfaction
At the close of another beautiful day in tanzania we found this gorgeous sunset along the long road home between Moshi and Arusha, with Mt. Meru in the distance.
A breath taking adventure, a brand new day, and with each one comes a new sunset. Aww the glory of a fulfilling day! Life in Africa! The vastness of life, the ever changing paths through which we travel, the many roads we choose to trek down... we make an impact where ever we go and whatever we do... either for good or for bad. Choose this day whom you will serve. These last 3 weeks in Tanzania have re-opened my eyes to the glory of the simple everyday life and the people that we constantly come into contact with.
