Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

A Week In

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Hi everyone. So its actually been a week......it feels like so much longer, time here just goes so slowly. So much stuff has been happening. Firstly I swapped placements for a day and went to the orphange out of town......its not something i will forget in a hurry, it really was terrible. It was a tiny little shack home to 55 kids, most of whom were at school when we got there, but the younger ones were still there. They sleep 3 to a bed, get fed cabbage once a day and dont leave the orphange until they are of the [View Full Entry]

I wrote this last week but never got round to posting it as the internet is SO slow that it took another week to get the photos on, so sorry this is a little out of date already. Mambo everyone, and Shikamoo for the oldies out there (mambo is hi to people your own age, and Shikamoo is a respectful greeting for those older than you that literally means I will wash your feet). Based on the state of most peoples feet out here due to the dust when its dry, or the mud when its wet, there's no chance of [View Full Entry]

First Few Days

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Moshi
Well Arusha was a bloody nightmare, it was such a tip, and people would not stop hasseling you if you were white. One thing that made me laugh on that trip was the fact that one fella came up to me trying to sell some paintings......in a pompy shirt. I tried to explain how i felt about it but i dont think he understood. He did say though that he had never heard of portsmouth and only liked the shirt for the texture. Anyway i dont think we will be going back to Arusha again, although saying that I found out [View Full Entry]

Dear reader, welcome back for the continuation of my travelblog. I apologise for the delay in world travel updates, however, it turns out that PhD studies are not only about travelling, but also about, well, studies! Nonetheless, somehow I have managed to squeeze in another serious journey, this time to South East Asia. My previous travelling partner, and eternal soulmate, of course, Helene, is currently working in Norway after completing her medicine degree. Instead of her pleasant company, I am travelling with a highly-deserving second best travelmate, namely my brother, Remi. Wit [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, im writing to you from an internet cafe in Arusha, Tanzania. ITs about an hour away from my town, we are just here on a day trip. I only paid for 15 minutes on the computer so i cant talk for long. Just to say I got here fine. The flight to Kenya with BA was fine, i actuaklly sat next to a girl who was working in Arusha (where i am now) teaching for 6 months. So i had company on the plane. Oh yeah, when we were landing i couldnt believe just how green Kenya is! By [View Full Entry]

After a longer break than planned for in UK we were fully recharged for more travelling and a new continent for the both of us - AFRICA! It was nice for a change to stay in the same bed for more than 3 days. A very average British Airways overnight flight from Heathrow (which saw only minor delays amazingly) arrived early morning on the 23rd January in a tropical (aka vely hot!) Dar . Again San's star performance on accommodation research came in and like old hands we grabbed a cab, negotiated the hell out of the poor guy, grabbed two [View Full Entry]

A Family Affair!

Almost Tennessee!
Almost Tennessee!
I was surprised at how much this area reminded me of Tennesse. The types of trees are different, but still very "in the Country" don't you think?
A Family Affair I stop on a regular basis and think to myself, “We are in Africa.” I mean we are really in Africa, you know that Dark Continent you study about in History and Geography. And you know the things that draw my attention the most, are the simplest of things. I got excited today when I opened a pack of cheese and it was good. Cherish your swisses, goudas, colby’s, mozzarella’s, and cheddars ‘cause cheese is NOT the same everywhere in the world!!! I bought fresh milk the other day too! NOPE, milk here does not come in a [View Full Entry]

We saw all of the big 5 and I think my favourite was the zebras and we saw trillions of them. So I decided to give everyone a couple of days to get over the last entry before taking you off to Eden in Africa on this entry. We saw thousands of healthy, strong animals in a green, lush environment that makes you imagine Noah and his Ark, the Lion King or whatever piece of culture you subscribe to. Anyway, we had some brilliant luck seeing these animals interact, work as families and even be very funny. Hope you like this instalment of photos - keep up the jealousy - it may just take you to Tanzania!! [View Full Entry]

Breakfast
Breakfast
Alone in Serengeti with a million onlookers!!
Having just got back from Tanzania and still reeling from its amazing mix of natural 'as-it-should-be' beauty and warm, calm people, I have started this blog to share some of the lessons learnt and some of the key things we all need to do (as well as a few photos). So, last Thursday, we were driving through Serengeti viewing millions of wildebeest and zebras in what looked like Southern Kent in UK (so green and full of trees at this time of year) when our driver said it was time to stop for breakfast. My family, me wife and two kids, [View Full Entry]
