So we're finally here in Arusha.... after two looooong eight-hour flights. It's been a real culture shock already, from the Detroit airport, to the Netherlands, to Kilimanjaro airport. Once you get to the airport here, you walk out of the plane and into the front of the airport, which was kind of different. Everyone greeted us very warmly... we didn't even have to wait through customs, they just took our passports and we got our luggage and then they put us and our luggage on a shuttle to take us from Kilimanjaro to Arusha. With the plans for the summer starting, we wanted to have a little bit of time with Joshua before the campaign started. As most mom’s and dad’s, we are thrilled to have Joshua home, under the same roof as us. “Uncle Sam” basically paid for Joshua’s trip this year and for that we are thankful. Wed 13th Ok another long drive but it was worth it. Read a lot of my book. The last bit of the road was bumpy but nothing compared with Kenya. Drove past the Nogorogoro Crater and drove along the edge, before continuing for another three hours to the Serengeti. I said to our guide that I wanted to see an adult male lion, and 10 mins later we saw one! Then Sean requested a leopard and in the next hour we came across one in a tree. It was too good to be true! The new volunteers have arrived and settled in, and although it is strange getting to know a whole new group of people, it is also a lot of fun. The age range in this group is more varied (the previous one was almost entirely college students), and it is interesting to see the differences in topics of conversation. Last Sunday we went to church with the boys from the Centre. It was a three hour service, but really didn't feel that long, because we only ever sat down for about 7 minutes at a time. Apparently Mike the Maasai has only 60 cows but his father has 1500 and he reckons his community would be able to pitch in and help him and would I take 450? I wasn't expecting this. What do you reckon dad? Got somewhere to keep 450 cows? I have been having quite the time with the Maasai community lately. A lot of people here really don't like them. Monday 11th Said good bye to mum and got in “mum’s tour company” shuttle over to Stone town and the ferry to the main land. I saw more of the hussel and bustle of town as we drove through and I’m glad we didn’t stay there. As I went through immigration (even though I was staying in Tanzania) I asked a girl behind me if she was on a tour and she was- The Nomad tour that I was joining! Perfect.
