Background: Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. One-party rule came to an end in 1995 with the first democratic elections held in the country since the 1970s. Zanzibar's semi-autonomous status and popular opposition have led to two contentious elections since 1995, which the ruling party won despite international observers' claims of voting irregularities.

The Garrett Family
The Garrett Family
Kipton and Gina Garrett, pictured with their boys - Nathan, Zach, and Justin
It is sometimes mind boggling to think of all the work that goes on to help our family live in Tanzania. Our finances and personal business have to be looked after in the States, our monthly newsletter must be printed and mailed, thoughtful friends and family take time to send care packages, treasurers mail our support each month, caring individuals create displays about our work on a bulletin boards, etc. We want to introduce you to a few of the people who are great helpers in our work. Kipton and Gina Garrett are members of the church in Dyer, AR. Kipton, [View Full Entry]

Which guinea pig would you like for dinner? I have to be honest, I would prefer not to have one at all if you don’t mind. What about a box, to take away? Oh, thank you so much but I’m actually quite full right now. Guinea pig would not be my first pick off the menu….especially after having seen them run free around my host’s house for half an hour. It was nice to be offered meat though I guess. This all happened at Agata’s house last Sunday, when we actually were quite hungry after trying to help Agata find the [View Full Entry]

Calm before the Storm

Before talking about Tanzania, some final thoughts about Rome. On my last day, I headed to the Vatican and was not disappointed. Didn't care too much for the Vatican museum, but was awed by Michaelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel. I want to have the job of the guy who just says "Shhhhh" every five seconds in there. His job description also included saying "No photo" every minute or so. I had to fight the urge to take a picture of the "No photo" guy. St. Peter's basilica. From what I've seen in my life, if I had to show somebody [View Full Entry]

a weekend amongst the Maasai

 Africa » Tanzania » North » Arusha
We ( 8 of my fellow volunteers from CCS) were picked up in Moshi on Saturday morning by our tourguide from Maasai Wanderings and we first drove to Arusha to visit a local craft market. After abrowsing through the stalls and bargaining with the vendors we got back in our landrovers and headed out of town to hike up a small mountain from where we were able to overlook the area. We were joined by our Maasai guide Jeremiah, who explained to us how the Maasai live, what was awaiting us for the rest of the evening, and we enjoyed a [View Full Entry]

The Maasai Huts in our Boma
Assisting the Maasai Women

Today is Friday, and i just completed my first week as a day care volunteer. To say the least, i have had just the most amazing week in one of the most beautiful countries with the friendliest people i have encountered so far. Tanzanians are dirt poor, but they have a heart so big and a smile that is infectious. Just wonderful. I am supervising, teaching, and playing with about 90 kids at my day care center and am assisting the 2 other teachers who also work as prison guards during the day or night shift (just depends). These two teachers [View Full Entry]

Boxes of Bibles
Boxes of Bibles
The boxes of Bibles arrived, which were generously purchased by the Airport church of Christ, in South San Francisco
Sometimes it’s hard to put into words the thankfulness we feel for our good brethren. Such is the case with our dear brethren at the Airport church of Christ, in South San Francisco. Our family has been co-workers with this congregation since 1986. That was the year that George began his studies at the East Tennessee School of Preaching. The Airport church of Christ supported our family during this two year period of schooling. Upon graduation, George, Joy, and Julia moved to South San Francisco, and George began working side by side with Windell Fikes. Three of our children were b [View Full Entry]

Bibles Being Unwrapped

I have been promising a couple of young friends of ours that I would send some animal pictures for them to see the "WILD SIDE" of Tanzania. And we haven't had time here in the last few months to actually go out and see them ourselves, but I remembered that during the campaigns it was so busy with all the visitors and news being reported that I didn't have the time to share pictures I took from our trip to Tarangire National Park and Ngoro Ngoro Crater. So I figured you wouldn't mind a few pictures from back in June, when [View Full Entry]

Be Still and Know

Hi, i arrived in Kilimanjaro - Moshi area, and my volunteer home base in Karanga village last night after flying from Jo burg to Dar es Salaam, Zansibar and eventually Kilimanjaro Intl airport. Luck would have it that on the flight from Dar to Kili, i was actually sitting next to the cross cultural prgram director for tanzania , mama Thea, who was also on her way to greet all of us newly arrived volunteers. What a great lady, and what a nice way to get inroduced to what we are about to do. We were picked up at the airport [View Full Entry]

Our First Visitation
Our First Visitation
The ladies' first visitation was a visit to bibi Joyce, who had been suffering from malaria. (Thanks to Julie Richardson for the photo)
First, I'd like to share with you some wonderful news! The lady with whom I've been studying with since June made the decision to be buried in baptism, and become a member of the New Testament church. I'll back up a little, and recount some recent events leading up to that day. As I wrote in a previous blog, bibi (grandmother) Joyce had been ill with malaria. The ladies of the congregation had just decided to start going together twice a month to visit the sick or those in need of encouragement. The ladies decided to visit bibi Joyce first, and [View Full Entry]
