These past few days have flown by! On Thursday, we got our first lecture on agrobiodiversity, a fancy term that basically refers to the way farmers interact with the land and all of the plants on it. This encompasses not only foodstuff but also soil-enriching trees, grasses for thatching, etc. It's a fairly fascinating subject; too bad that we don't really get to spend time on it because of our busy schedule. On Friday we walked about an hour to see some farms and agrobiodiversity in action. It's much more amazing when you actually see it. I was impressed with the [View Full Entry]

Since it's a Sat, I planned on sleep in this morning, got up at about 8:45am which is fairly late compare to the weekdays, we're going to a quick hike at lake Duluti today, set off at around 11am, took the daladala to the trailhead, paid around $10 for entrance fee and a ranger with us. it is a very easy hike around the lake, on a sunny day, we should be able to see Mt. Kili and Mt. Meru around, but unfortunately it's quite cloudy today so we weren't able to see anything, lake Duluti is ok, nothing spectacular, I [View Full Entry]

Our African Odyssey

Hello again, everybody. The three Roes are off again on another wonderful trip. God is so gracious to us and has blessed us so abundantly in our many travels. We are off to Tanzania in just a few hours. We are going to be with friends that are missonaries close to Mwanza, Tanzania on Lake Victoria. They have established new churches, started a Bible Institute to train pastors and started an orphanage close by that Chrissy hopes to visit often. Three college students have been interning with the work and arrived in May to help coach soccer with some secondary school [View Full Entry]

Other than the language training in the morning, we went to a local market out of town, it takes about an hour of to get to there by Daladala, Daladala is minibus, have lots of this in smaller town in China, you can get on/off anywhere you want to even though they do have certain dedicated stops, the route is recognized by the color painted on the bus, the difference between Daladala and public bus is Daladala normally go further out of town while the public bus only run inside of Arusha, it cost about 1000Tsh($1) to get to the market. Hello again, Well i'm all finished in Rulenge now, we drove back to Mwanza and the Tanzanian office on tuesday - another very dusty long drive. I am now sitting in the Sunshine Motel in Kahama using a GPRS connection that is surprisingly good here. That is one thing I have found about Tanz., they may not have tar roads everywhere, or hot water where they have hot water taps but they have fantastic phone reception in the most remote places! So I had a day in Mwanza, not a day off however as Robert and myself were preparing for the [View Full Entry]

July 9, 10, 2008 SERENGETI, Tanzania This was a very long day in the car as we drove over 9 hours from Masi-Mara south and through West Mara, and into Tanzania as we made our way to the Kensington Camp in the Serengeti ( Masai for “endless plain” ) for some more game viewing. It would be hard to explain the road conditions for most of the trip !!! You wouldn’t believe it if I was able to explain anyway. ( and this is a main road ). The Serengeti ecosystem includes the Masai Mara in Kenya and the Serengeti and [View Full Entry]

We went to go see the Saa Nane (8:00, or maybe 2:00 if it was read in Swahili time) Museum on Wednesday afternoon. The Lonely Planet Guidebook describes it as a place of weird and quirky things. Basically, a guy with a foot fetish started a museum dedicated to the feet of all creatures, from humans to...well, we don't really know. We (Ryan, Ashley Burns, and I) located it on the map and walked towards it. We finally arrived at the place where the museum should have been, but there wasn't really a sign to the museum. We enter the grounds [View Full Entry]

Tomorrow is our last day on project - hard to believe that 3 weeks have gone by already. Monday was a public holiday so I went with Boon in the morning to help out at his project and then went and had lunch with my ladies. They are so great - the lunch consisted of Ugali (maize stuff that looks like mashed potato kinda) plus fried whole fish, spinach and fruit... they also bought sodas for us all which I think was a bit of a treat from them. I got a couple of cool photos so I'll post those when [View Full Entry]
