I am learning the meaning of 'Pole Pole' the hard way. It means 'slowly slowly' and is a mantra for African living. Things just happen here on a different time scale with different priorities. Today we had some time to kill after we had eaten lunch and before we had to go to our afternoon projects so we decided to get a coffee, which we ordered at 1pm. The 25th of June is now a dedicated day of celebration for all Art in Tanzania volunteers. Yesterday was just one of those days for everyone. If you ever wondered how tiring climbing up and down very steep hills carrying a 12V car battery is then you're very strange, but I found out today that the answer is very! :) I arrived here in Rulenge on monday night, it was only an 8 hour drive over some of the worst roads I have ever seen! We had a short hop on the ferry over part of Victoria lake which was very pleasant but from then on it was continuous dirt roads, some reasonable, some horrendous. Made it safe, with bags = happy. I'm now on day 4 and finally have a spare hour or so for some internetting. We left early on Friday morning from our (what now seems very palacial) flat and said goodbye to our flatties which was very strange. I've spent my whole London life living with Bay and over 2 years living in 20a. The process of getting on the flight was relatively painless - especially when we learned later that the Nairobi flight before ours was cancelled and the volunteers are still waiting for their bags.... 3.5 days later. This last month has disappeared like a plate of fresh fried squash from my childhood! I remember standing by the stove and as each slice came out of the frying pan and onto the brown paper bag to soak up that extra grease, we’d lie in wait for it to cool just enough so we could grab it and down it in just a couple of bites! As they say in Swahili :) I arrived in Tanzania yesterday with Robert. We landed and spent the day in the port town of Dar Es Salaam, a stones throw from Zanzibar but no quite so picturesque! It's been a busy month in Tanzania! We've been on the go from morning till night, almost every day this month. Here is an overview of our past three weeks: JUNE 3-8, MOSHI CAMPAIGN Our last blog covered some of this week. The day before the campaign started, a medical clinic was held in Moshi. We had an early game drive and watched the sun come up over the Serengeti. Magic! It’s so exciting to accidentally find a pride of lions or a hippo walking across the road. Then we hit the road back to Arusha. Days on the road are actually harder than you would think. The roads are ridiculously bumpy, the drivers concentrate constantly on avoiding potholes, they are always looking for other peoples brake marks and the locals drive like maniacs.
