Wednesday & Thursday, July 14 & 15, 2010:
We went on a two day safari. It was phenomenal. Like, there are not
even words to describe how amazing God's creation is!!
We were not even
on the safari yet, we were just driving
to the safari, when out roaming loose were camels! Seriously!
There were so many of us we had to take 3 safari vehicles. Everybody except Grant and Rod went. We did have an extra, though--Ozi Whittaker, from Nigeria. His Dad is a surgeon there---the one who was kidnapped, held hostage, and shot in the arm. Anyway, Ozi came with us. In our vehicle was Mom, Cody, Katherine, Lexi, Stephani, and I.
The first day, we went to Tarangire National Park. It. Was. So. Hot. And windy. BUT I did not get sunburned!!! 😱 We saw--I think--over 120 elephants! (Cody counted). And zebras, and giraffes, and gazelle, and wildebeest. And a very cute dik-dik!! Definitely the highlight was when we saw a CHEETAH chasing a gazelle! She was pretty serious. (Missed him, though). Lexi got a fantastic picture of it! It was so cool! One of the safari buses had a flat tire,
but that was fixed in a jiffy. We stayed at a hotel/lodge in Karatu Wednesday night. It was not bad!
Thursday we went to Ngorongoro Crater. Amazing. That is something you just have to be there to know what it is like....you can't even imagine it. You see literally thousands of wildebeests and zebras roaming around. We also saw hyenas, warthogs, several different types of gazelles, hippos, ostriches, and LIONS! That was totally awesome. (Although it would have been more awesome still if we hadn't watched the freaky movie!) We saw one--a female--off in the grass. As if special for us, she finally stood up, and displayed her massive body for us. Lions are absolutely incredible. 😊 We were still excited about that, when we came upon a whole bunch of safari buses. About two feet (no exaggeration) from the edge of the road, two male lions were placidly laying down. Within 3 minutes, there were about 25 safari buses jammed together, all trying to get the best view of the lions. We inched our way up there, until we could see these monstrous beasts. It was so cool watching them!! Not that they did anything exciting, but
I mean, we were 15 feet away (or less) from lions...and we weren't even in a zoo! Oh, and we also saw a green mamba. That is the snake that when you get bit by it you start saying goodbyes! We didn't get too close. 😱
When we got back--after a horribly bumpy 3 hour ride--to the ACSOP, we had our farewell supper. Besides our group, the Staffords, Samfords, Smelsers, Whittakers, and many of our translators and their families were there, so we had a pretty large group. The farewell supper was a lot like the welcoming supper, so it was delicious. Oh, and Rod & Grant baptized 2 more while we were gone!
When you look at all his creations, you think, our God is truly an awesome God!
"You are beautiful beyond description,
Too marvelous for words,
Too wonderful for comprehension,
Like nothing ever seen or heard.
Who can grasp your infinite wisdom?
Who can fathom the depth of you words?
You are beautiful beyond description,
Majesty enthroned above.
And I stand, I stand
In awe of You.
I stand, I stand,
In awe of You.
Holy God, to whom
All
praise is due,
I stand in awe of You."!
