Puncture! On the way to the site on the 24th. And yes, it was a thorn !
This is a state of mind that was not familiar to me before I arrived in Tanzania. I first encountered it with Greg Maude, the Australian who was doing the EM work in Rulenge, and have often wondered if I would ever aquire such a state of mind. Today was my coming of age... The patience of a geophysicist has to be able to withstand numerous major set backs and twice as many minor annoyances whilst remaining in a reasonable and logical frame of mind, ie. not flipping loosing it!
So today, we have 16 lines to complete on the current site totalling 4.6 km. This is not an infeasible amount, perfectly reasonable considering at the previous site we covered 9 km + on some days. We arrive at site at 9 and are off and away by 9:20. Now this isn't the Forest of Spiders any more, but it has been replaced by the forest of dense thorny bushes instead! So the lines we need to walk have to go through patches of these ridiculous thorn bushes - I mean the kind of thorns you only see in Kids story books when it's a horror in a wood -
I'm thornyI didn't mind too much but it did hurt! (i'm ok now)
and they need to be cut out of the way. We invested in a punga - very large sharp machete - and this is what I was in charge of today, along with the GPS, and Abdallah was running the Magnetometer behind me. The path needed to be cleared but the thorns did not give up without a fight and would scratch and snag every part of me - I have had thorns stuck in my arms, legs, back, scalp and bottom - but I knew this was coming so, you know, it wasn't too bad.... not really.
So we're going well, we've complete 7 1/2 lines and we have a lot of time left as our drive is away from the field all day picking up a spare tyre following the puncture on the way to site the previous day. This is when Abdallah, who is a hard worker and was going strong carrying the very uncomfortable Magnetometer equipment, was struck by Malaria. He was fine he said, and continued working. He was however repeatedly ducking into the bush to vomit and so we didn't get much further very quickly.
This was when Murphy's Law kicked in.
Malaria ManAbdallah working the magnetometer shortly he came down with Malaria. He was ok within 24 hours of having the medication for it.
THe magentometer, a Geotron G5, suddenly turned off. And on again. And on and off again a few times. Now when we got it back online it had reset all of it's settings, time, date, mode etc. Not a problem, but then it had also filled up it's internal memory - something that really shouldn't be possible unless you were doing readings all day and all night, all week! So we head back to the site base, where the other equipment has been left, and we download the data onto the laptop - only to find that the data we had taken all day... has been deleted, and replaced with zeros. For everything. All day, all for nothing.
So yes, all is well when you look at the big picture and have a lot of patience! :) So we have to do the same work again tomorrow but never mind, T.I.G. (this is geophysics) after all. I'm still enjoying having a bit more control over things, even if they do go wrong!
I hope you are all well. It was lovely to speak to you (M+D, nanny, jenni), I really appreciate your calls.
Look after yourselves,
Love to all,
Joe.

Send Private MessageThanks for all the updates and the photos - dont know if my mind is put to rest or not!! You will have a stomach of cast iron by the end of this - is the water boiled????? Water borne parasites are just one of my many fears.....The caterpillar was at least 4 inches long by the looks of him but well done for not squishing him
Hopefully your experience will actually make us all think a bit about the real meaning of luxury and feel truly blessed by how easy our lives are!
It was great to actually hear you - even if only 1 word in 10- very comforting. Nanny has kindly shared her letters too - well done you she appreciates it so much. Its been nice that we have had some nice weather for her visit and we are at last making progress with the garden!!!!!!!
We are not making similar progress with wedding dresses but its fun in an emotionally draining sort of way - its quite exhausting trying not to cry every time she comes out of the changing room! We actually agreed the other night that Jenni would be a great ally in this search since she has such great taste. I think Ellie just thinks I am biased
Talking of Nannie's letters for some bizarre reason ( probably not able to read my scribbles) you are using a totally alien postcode but they still get there! Her actual post code is NR10 3BE
I cannot imagine combining the stress of physical stress ( vomiting/ thorn damage etc) and challenge ( difficult terrain etc) and IT! Having to get computers to actually do what you want when you want and if it doesnt work you have to do all the physical hard labour all over again......patience is indeed a virtue as is determination and hard work I am very proud of you and your stamina! I though the experience would be exciting but not perhaps as character forming as this! Will we even recognise you???? Will you need to be fitted for a new suit to accommodate all the muscles???
Missing you - this birthday weekend with Tom will be odd without you but we will raise a glass of two in youe honour!
Much love
xxxxxx
Pardon excuse for bloody poor language but have just got back from local watering hole with Sam and Tom(no madness going on there, i have to say...)...actually it was watering holes since we started at the Crown and then ambled down to the Red Lion. God, the Crown is a shite pub...(apologies again to casual readers of this extremely interesting blogcom...i don't mean to offend but often do...). Anyway, sounds like an amazingly frustrating experience. Most importantly, how is Abdullah? I hope he's alright. What caused the loss of data...I suppose if you could answer that then you wouldn't be telling us about it! Ah well, one has to be philosophical about these things..this is code for having a few beers, by the way. Picture of Twiga Beach looked fab...shame they didn't have mod cons! Got to go nows cos gradually losing sense of touch in fingers...shouldn't have had that last pint of Pedi.
Good night matey, sleep wel!
Blogging boozy Dad
PS. Tom's birhtday on 28th ..send him a message (like, where's my pint...)
