Hello again,
Well i'm all finished in Rulenge now, we drove back to Mwanza and the Tanzanian office on tuesday - another very dusty long drive. I am now sitting in the Sunshine Motel in Kahama using a GPRS connection that is surprisingly good here. That is one thing I have found about Tanz., they may not have tar roads everywhere, or hot water where they have hot water taps but they have fantastic phone reception in the most remote places!
So I had a day in Mwanza, not a day off however as Robert and myself were preparing for the Magnetic survey work we are now doing. This project, involving four sites and scheduled for 3 weeks, has been put in our hands and if things go accordingly Robert will be leaving me halfway through to manage it myself! We're not alone however, we have Norbert the driver who can speak english and is very helpful and Abdullah who is a Geologist working for African Nickle who is learning how to do Geophysics field work. So having worked fairly hard and constantly to get the previous E.M. survery done, we're straight into this one which is going to be fairly constant hard work (there are 4 sites, each require walking about 30 km) as we want to get done in time to have some time off to go to the Oppi Koppi music festival in S.A. (although that plan has not been confirmed yet).
In other news I have tried another 4 types of beer so thats nice :) The waitresses here keep laughing at robert and I when ever we order anything and the fish we had tonight, fried whole, was something that will never make me complain about a few bones ever again! The scenery down here is a lot flatter than up in Rulenge, the vegetation is a lot more sparse but I did see some baubab trees (that could be spelt wrong, i'd ask Robert but he's using the rest of the hot water to have his bucket shower - we actually bought ourselves a kettle today to ensure we would at least be able to get hot water where ever we stayed... so long as we have electricity!).
On the way to site today we passed a village, all of the men of the village it seemed were doing some dance down the road, forcing us to drive off road around them, wearing masks and carrying bows and spears. Apparently it was a dance to deter thieves, so there you go.
I should, fingers crossed, have fairly regular internet access, but limited time to use it so I will update little and often if I can.
I hope everything is well with you all, I am missing England more and more! :) ....but I do kind of like the sunshine here :)
Love to all,
Joe.

It all seems like very hard work, but glad you are enjoying it. it was lovely to get your letter and i'm glad that you got that feeling that Granddad had had that same red soil under his finger nails. it must make you feel very close to him. it's really good to keep up with all your news. uncle John wants your address so next time that I contact him I will forward it to him.
all my love Judith
Sounds like they plan on getting the most out of you then! Great to hear you'll get a chance to manage the work out there, should be great experience and a change from the norm.
Just to add to your feeling of being homesick, Aberdeen is a blistering 24degC today - don't worry i'm staying out of the sun by spending the day at work. Having a fancy dress party up here for my birthday in a few weeks, theme is film characters, so i'm going as Jack Sparrow! Should be awesome.
Keep having fun, Tom
Yes - we've actually had some sunshine. Yesterday, Sunday, was sufficiently sunny and warm to actually sit in the garden. Lovely. Mum and I were mainly thrashing around in the garden trying to catch up with a mountain of weeds and overgrown stuff. We spent quite a lot of time digging up the "cannabis" shrub (casual readers please note: it's not really a cannabis plant but the leaves look familiar). It's now in front of the bins - hopefully we haven't killed it, although it's looking a bit droopy. Sounds like you're going to be pretty busy but the Oppi Koppi thing is a good target - how's that chess set coming along? It's a shame that you're not nearer to Ngorongoro - I reckon you're about 250km form there. By the way it's buabab or sometime baobab. Wikipedia says: "Other common names include boab, boaboa, bottle tree and monkey bread tree. The species reach heights of 5-30 m and trunk diameters of 7-11 m. A specimen in Limpopo Province, South Africa, often considered the largest example alive, has a circumference of 50 m and an average diameter of 15 m." Fascinating eh? And Nickel is spelt like that not nickle and my names' Corut and ..... Sam's coming over this weekend and staying for the week to do stuff on his car - so you might even get another message from him! Anyway, better go now and see what we're having for dinner. So it's Kwaheri from him and its tutaonana from me.

Hey Joe, great to hear from you again. Hope the sun is still shining at the Sunshine Motel!
That's a lot of walking you are doing..you must be shattered...and those beers sound well deserved! Sounds like they're giving you quite a bit of responsibility too - great experience for you.
I went wedding dress shopping with Mum last weekend (Max went to his Mum and Dad's) - v.exciting (and quite weird) trying on the first dress. Haven't chosen one yet, but we're looking at more this weekend too. Mum did very well and didn't weep too much!
Hope your new survey is going well (what is E.M?)
Blog soon! love from big sis x x
