5 AM wake up call. Safaris are best early morning or early evening. And after a brief coffee we hopped on the lodges 4-wheel drive and set out into the bush. The sun was already up (sunrise this time of the year is 4:30) the coolness of the night still there. But it was clear it’s going to be another very hot day. The dry season has not yet given way to the rains in this area of the country, everyone, mostly the animals, were eagerly awaiting. Tiaan skillfully drove the Toyota on dirt roads with huge potholes looking for wildlife activity. However, this morning unlike yesterday it was quiet, except for a few birds and antelopes and plenty of spiderwebs we picked up in our faces as we drove along. There are 72 different antelope ... read more

Hazyview is a sub-tropical farming town in Mpumalanga province, renowned for its large banana and macadamia nut industries, contributing about 20% of South Africa's bananas and 30% of macadamia output. It is also a tourist destination for people traveling to the Krueger National Park or doing the Panorama Tour, which was precisely our intention too. The Panorama Route is a famous road on the edge of the Midlveld in Mpelanga. The topography at the Blyde River Canyon drops by app 1000 m to the “Lowveld” creating spectacular gorges and waterfalls. There are actually more waterfalls around this area than anywhere else in southern Africa. Regarded as the most stunning of the lot, Mac Mac has twin falls that plunge some 70m into a gorge below. We had a list of about 6 places we wanted to ... read more

We met up with Achmet, Shady and Glen in Britstown where we stayed over in the old jail now called Vyfster....not bad but i don't like the old building structure that is mixed in with newer buildings...it takes some character away..Also meet a paramedic from JHB, Mark that tests all employees of shipping companies for COVID...he himself had COVID in a bad way, but is now fully recovered. Its his own company and he gets paid by the shipping companies...now on his way to Cape Town..... read more

Africa » South Africa » Gauteng » Pretoria November 28th 2020

Early dawn we drove to Pretoria about 50 km North of Johannesburg. Pretoria, is one of the three capital cities in modern South Africa. The other two are Bloemfontein and Cape Town. Pretoria was founded in 1855 by the Boer leader Marthinus Pretorius, (his people also called Voortrekkers) and named it after his father, Andries Pretorius. Pretorius father had become a national hero of the Voortrekkers after his victory over king Dingane and the Zulu Africans in the Battle of Blood River in 1838. They founded the Transvaal Republic with Pretoria as its capital. After the discovery of diamonds and gold in the Boers areas the British Empire annexed the territories they earlier agreed to assign to them, leading to the Boer Wars. The lost war resulted in the end of the Transvaal Boer Republic and ... read more

I have to apologize for not be really on time for writing my blog these days. Been pretty busy at home, and I will not complain about it! This blog cover the little road trip we did from the wine region of Stellenbosch all the way to home...with few golf courses on the way the last 2 weeks of November. Little Covid update. Sadly my predictions established early October have been pretty on the dot when it comes to Covid in SA. As many other would confirm, it has actually come way earlier than expected. South Africa is a huge country, and population wise you can nearly compare it to France or Germany. My point was simple...from 5,000 new cases nationally, be cautious...from 10,000 daily new contaminations, stay put at home. Well...back to Stellenbosch....we were between ... read more
