Far out I'm absolutely buggered, and it's only 3.30pm! I woke up this morning and decided that I wanted to try and hike tthe Platterkip Gorge up to the top of Table Mountain. Steve, the hostel owner warned me against it though, saying if the weather moved in I would be stuck up there and it would be dangerous to get down. He suggested that I try the Lion's Head climb instead, because it was shorter, andsafer to get back down if bad weather came along. What he didn't mention, is that it is pretty hard (despite what the reviews say) and includes section where you are scrambling over rocks and using chains, foot holds and ladders. I'm glad he didn't tell me though, because if I knew, I wouldnt have started it. Once I arrived, ... read more

Today was a real lekkerday. Yesterday I made mention that I was heded to Stellenbosch to do a wine tasting day, so today, that's what I did. It really was a marvelous day. We went to 4 wineries. The first specialised in champagne style white wines. We tried 3, plus a rose and a dessert wine while sitting around a fire place; the perfect beginning to a cold and miserable day. The second winery we tried 3 white, 3 red and a brandy. Fern, our tour guide, made sure that it was known I was celebrating my graduation from uni, so I ended up getting larger 'tastes' from all the wineries. At this winery we tried red wine with dark chocolate. I never thought it would be good, but it really is. The barman at this ... read more

Well that was really the day from hell. It all started at 4am Sunday when I headed for Melbourne airport. I had a 6am flight to Sydney, where I would then catch a 14hr flight to Johannesburg. That 14 hour flight was a killer. It was so hard to sleep, especialy because we were travelling with the daylight the whole way. Added to that I had a big South African bloke next to me who had to constantly get up to stretch, and he spoke to himself. I kept myself busy by watching Dark Shadows and The Avengers, other than that I just tried to sleep and listen to music. When I arrived in Johannesburg it was a mad rush to try and get to my flight to Cape Town because my flight to Johannesburg was ... read more

Wow, what a day. The weather was truly perfect. About 26 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and a slight breeze. I didnt have anything planned for the day so on suggestion by Wayne, the Amber Tree Lodge manager, I took a walk down Long St. and then to the V&A Waterfront. Long St. is pretty similar to Brunswick St. in that it is a street filled with bars, restaurants and cafes. Once I arrived to the V&A Waterfront I was confronted by a statue that I had been told to look out for; a giant man made out of empty Coca-Cola crates. It wa actually really well done and surprisingly detailed. I took a wander around the Waterfront, and it is similar to Navy Pier in Chicago and the Pier district in San Francisco. ... read more

August 2nd The films on the plane are brand new. The entertainment system isn’t. Luckily I’m shattered so I easily sleep through the first six hours and read for the rest. After going through passport control means I’ve now been to thirty countries and seven continents. I ask at the airport for suggestions for places to stay and how to get there. They ring a hostel (Backpackers on Castle), give me an address and arrange a shuttle (250 Rand). There’s no-one there when I get to the address. And while I wait I check out a review of the hostel using their computers and realise I probably don’t want to be here. I go next door (Two Oceans). I treat myself to a private room (250 Rand), a hot shower and an hour’s nap. The hostel ... read more

Arrived here in Cape Town after a grueling 17 hour flight plus 7 more waiting in 2 airports. You know what that means for one's bad back. Completely zonked out in my sleep-deprived condition, Cape Town makes for a good introduction to South Africa. This lovely town is just what I expected and dreamed about. We breezed through immigration and felt welcomed as Table Mountain greeted us out of the airport. This iconic landmark makes its presence felt as soon as you breathe South African air. Not bad. Even as the sun fades, its beauty cannot be easily dismissed. url=https://marilil.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/into-south-africa-and-that-lovely-12-apostles-hotel-by-the-atlantic/The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa It was nearly dusk when we arrived at our hotel. I could have easily spent the next 2 days without stepping out of this luxurious hotel to catch up with my ... read more

Cape Town, our last stop on our nine months long trip which has given us so much – good and bad times. Few hits have been hard to manage but it has included several great life lessons. Both of us agree that we wouldn’t do such long trip again in the same style… hitchhiking, staying with the locals and experiencing the real African life. Today we appreciate the life in a different way and it has been a challenge for our relationship but we came just closer to each other :) We have finished our trip in the most beautiful city in Africa – Cape Town. Indeed it is a cross-cultural city with a great vibe and it has been great to finish up here instead of going from Cape Town to Nairobi. This is because ... read more

When I walked into the office of our Managing Director Andreas right the day after returning from Amsterdam, he asked me whether I wanted to go to Cape Town, South Africa, for a business trip, in two weeks’ time because he could not go himself. We had, together with our South African business partners, submitted a symposium at the International Congress of Psychology, to be held in Cape Town from the 22nd till the 27th of July. The idea was that Andreas would be presenting together with them because he would be in South Africa some time around the congress dates anyway in order to do business with our partners. But two weeks before the congress, he realised that he had way too much to do and that there was no way he could fit the ... read more

Windhoek to Cape Town is approximately 1,500 km and was the longest bus trip I took so far in one go. It took 21 hours, but wasn't actually so bad, partly because I was so tired from my trip to the Sossuvlei and slept quite easily. This was until we reached the South African border at about 3.30 a.m. and all had to get off, get stamped out of Namibia (where the official asked me 'How's Bono?') and into South Africa. This would have been straight forward enough if the South Africans hadn't kept us over an hour as they checked everyone's laptop, for I don't know what. I woke up on the bus as the sun came up and admired the scenery as we passed through the Northern Cape. I had fallen asleep again as ... read more

Well finally we write. we have just spent the lasthree days in Cape Town, staying at the waterfront in the Commodore hotel. Would highly recommend this place, very clsoe to all the action and great rooms and service. Deb arrived late on Thursday nightnas she missed her connecting flight in Joburg as late leaving Sydney, ended up arriving at 10pm instead of 7 pm. on Friday the waether was really bad, so we jumped in the car with Ash and Mich (maccas people) and headed on a drive. we left CT and headed to St James which is a well known surf beach south east of the city. didnt stop as too wet. we then headed to Simons town and the Penguin colony, we didnt pay the 45rand to see them instead wedrove a little further ... read more
