Background: After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to found their own republics. The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration and intensified the subjugation of the native inhabitants. The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the Boer War (1899-1902). The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races. The 1990s brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

not looking down!
not looking down!
this actually wasn't too scary since I was not letting myself think about what I was about to do...
Molweni! The academic part of my experience here is over - and I do miss it sometimes, although I am really enjoying not having any papers to write, papers to read, or maps to draw. Our written exam this past Tuesday (after our oral presentations Monday) was such a wonderful experience for me. I wrote for three hours about my experiences here both about our field work/service-learning and application of theories covered in our course. I really learned a lot about the processes that make my head work. Three hours was not long enough; I think that is the first time [View Full Entry]

Cape Town half way up the mountain. It looks nice now, but it got windy and cloudy quickly.
I've managed to make it through one week in Cape Town and the one thing I've noticed is that there are very McDonald's around. There are McDonald's here, but not one at every corner like in the US and not one with a 24 hour drive thru like the one at Albion. They have the Mega Mac, or the Double Big Mac, here but it still has fewer calories than the Monster Thickburger from Hardee's that a group of us ate earlier this summer, and no, I have not tried it yet, but it is on my long to-do list. I [View Full Entry]

Welcome family, friends, peers, internet stalkers and the casual Googler, This is the first installment of my travelblog I created to help keep in touch with people while I am abroad for the semester in Cape Town, South Africa. I'm not really the blogging type, so we'll see how long I keep this updated before I become bored with it or forget about it. I landed in Cape Town at 9:30 pm on Sunday, July 13 down one credit card, one cell phone, with absolutely no idea if the woman from the University of Cape Town (UCT) would be there to [View Full Entry]

Far from home

July 13, 14, 15, 2008 Tanzania to Cape Town. Sunday morning we left our camp early to catch our small planes to Arusha, Kilimanjaro, ( with some great views of snow covered Mount Kilimanjaro ) and on to Nairobi, Kenya. We enjoyed a farewell dinner, courtesy of Kensington Tours, our hosts for this part of our trip, at the famous Carnivore Restaurant in Nairobi. This is a MEAT place with some of the local specialties. We tried Crocodile and Ostrich along with too much other meat. Nice place similar to the “Brazilian BBQ” places we know from North America. Next morning [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Cape Town late Friday evening, expecting a ride into town arranged by the tour company, but this never happened. I don't know why, so I had to take a taxi to my hotel. The taxi driver talked the entire time and told me in detail the history of South Africa. The flight from Amsterdam took longer than the flight from Vancouver to Amsterdam. Africa is a big continent. We flew over Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Angola, and Namibia before getting to Cape Town. Eleven hours crammed into a small aluminum tube with wings along with 200 other people. My [View Full Entry]

On our first full day in Cape Town we visited this old Dutch Castle. It's the oldest monument of European settlement in South Africa. It was pretty interesting but i think the most interesting part of the day was walking from the car to the castle down the city streets of Cape Town. People, mainly blacks and coloureds hang around in the street doing nothing. Looking hell sketchy! When we got there a "parking attendant" told us that we could park inside. Wish we knew that before walking down the street. Kells little Granny told us to wait there while she [View Full Entry]

Molweni! How is everyone? I'm doing super! Two days ago a group of us hiked Table Mountain. One of the members from my study abroad group had to leave the programme early for a family function, and his last wish before leaving was to hike the mountain. We spent two hours hiking up a nice trail to the top. It was an absolutely gorgeous day; at one point I actually got warm enough to be in my shorts and a t-shirt, but as we approached the windy top I put my wind pants and jacket back on! When you see pictures [View Full Entry]
