Hi there,
Just returned from 6 days in Kruger. Easy drive down from Jo'burg in the Nissan 4.2 patrol (petrol gulping monster). Two nights at Biyamiti Bush camp and 4 at Lower Sabie. The Biyamti river was dry (only really flows in the rainy months), so the Animals had moved off to more permanent water. Dissapointing game viewing in the area, very dry.
Headed off towards crocodile bridge for morning game drive, and then onto the bird hide at Nthandanyathi, and the pan at Nhlanganzwani (say that after 3 beers:).
Crocodile bridge has a very active pride of lions. Two monster males, and about 6 females, 1 with 2 cubs a few weeks old. Always a circus with big cat spottings on the tar roads, need a traffic cop on a motorcyle (would make good pics :)
Normally the bird hide is great , it faces east so better in the afternoon with the sun behind you. DAMN, no water there, so no animals either. Went to the pan, same thing, no water but dynamited hole in pan wall.
Spoke with one of the safari tour operators about this. The prob is this....there are too many
hippos crapping in the water, making massive nitrogen build up, and in turn killing the grazers that drink the water.
Days 3-6 around lower sabie excellent. Stayed in the new accommodation there , the BDZU3 (something like that) for three people. All new , great veranders, and barbeque area, overlooking the sabie river, under the shade of Fever trees.
All in all a fantastic time again....
