I hereby announce my next adventure: I have officially been accepted to attend University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa! I'll be going for the second semester of this year- which means leaving at the end of January- a bit more than 2 months from now! I have nothing more to say- I was logging on to travelblog to read other people's blogs about South Africa and decided to send out this note. Until then, 'mark... read more

Welcome to Africa! Auf geht's - Linksverkehr - no problem - das kennen wir ja schon von Australien. Ueberhaupt erinnert uns vieles an ... read more

I copied the tidal-charts for the coming month, made a list of all the rivers we would encounter and stocked up on lightweight food and fresh water. Our plan; to cycle the Wildcoast along its coastline, appeared quite straight forward we thought as we studied maps and read up on Xhosa-clans and their traditions. My list of rivers numbered 42, of which 20 were blind, one had a bridge and yet another one was bridged by a car ferry. Out of the remaining 20, nine could be crossed at low tide without swimming, another nine rivers had to be crossed during the lowest tide possible which was around springtide, and the remaining two we would undoubtedly have to swim unless we’d find some locals with dugout canoes. Since everything seemed so simple I spent the last ... read more

Hi Everybody! Just wanted to let you know that I am safe and healthy in St. Lucia South Africa. Sorry about not emailing or updating- It has been super busy with no internet access and non-stop traveling. Let me give you an update: I think I last emailed from Maun... or was it Jo'burg???? Well... I am going to say it was Jo'burg... So I survived my two nights in Jo'burg. The first night we stayed in Mufasa Backpackers on the outskirts of town- nothing too exciting to tell you about. The next morning Marnie and I went with Sarah and Boris on a taxi tour of Jo'burg and it's townships (the shanty poor, poor, poor neighbourhoods). It was so different than i expected! I though that Jo'burg was going to be completely fortified and scary ... read more

Yes that's right, me again, and no, contrary to popular belief I haven't been eaten by lions or any of the other big five. My most abject and humble apologies to you all for my lack of travel blog entries over the past few weeks but I do actually have good reasons (and for once I'm not fibbing)! After my last proper entry I went to Umkomaas to spend a week at Khanya Hospice. Unfortunately Umkomaas is a bit out in the sticks so I couldn't get internet access until the end of the week by which point I had so many e-mails piled up to sort through that I couldn't get around to doing the blog. I was in Umkomaas from July 22nd to July 27th aka my 21st birthday! The prospect of having my ... read more

... read more

Ok, so i think the blog is up and running again... i guess we'll see... I think i am still missing the blog entry of my lat day in Chintsa, so here again is the short version: I went on a mountain bike ride with two of my roommates from Bucaneers and our guide through the Xhosa villages that are in this area. We visited Mama Tofus village, got a taste of Xhosa culture, signing and dancing, and mingled with the kids of the village, before we continued our bike ride through the rather hilly area around Chintsa. An awesome time, and great experience in the village. The Xhosa people are super nice and very traditional in their beliefs, and we really got the impression that this was not just put on for the 'tourists" but ... read more

Hi everyone, Well here goes for another entry. I'm sorry I haven't been on more often, and especially sorry I haven't replied to messages as quickly as I'd have liked but the honest truth is that I have just been so busy. Work is going really well. I'm doing something different everyday. Highlights of the week have included teaching the patients Welsh, in exchange for them teaching me Zulu. They are, I have to say much better at the Welsh than I am at the Zulu, surprise, surprise. They have very good ways of working phrases out too. For example, "Syt wyt ti?" has become "Sit and wait". I've also been to a convant, Japanese gardens, made home visits, helped with staff training, been to a board meeting and help develop a mother and child education ... read more

It didn't take long to drive down to Durban from the Central Berg. We were catching up with Ryan & Nat from our overland trip, so we booked to stay at Hippo Hide in the Berea area, as this was close to where our Kiwi mates were staying with Nat's godmother, Janey. Her flat was right opposite the Musgrave Centre, so we went for lunch at Mugg & Bean, confusing the poor waitresses (as always!). Then we drove down to the North Beach for a walk along the prom. It was Friday afternoon and there were lots of children playing in the sand and surfers enjoying the waves. That evening we went for drinks and dinner at Sak's on Wilson's Wharf. It was fun to hang over the jetty and watch the little crabs and fishies ... read more
