Constructing Houses For the next two days Renata and I and the rest of group B volunteered in the construction of two houses. One of the sites was for the Gunede Family. Eddie is the father of the house. Currently he and his wife and 3 children live in a one-room house. The second site was for the Jobe Family. Currently on their plot of land there is ten residents living in three one-room houses including one grandmother, her two sons and six children. Cement and Concrete Flooring For the two houses we worked on mixing concrete for the concrete foundation in the two five room houses down the road from one another. Other member of the group worked on laying bricks for the septic tanks. It was an amazing and educational experience. I learned how ... read more

Saint Lucia Crocodile Center Today is an exciting day as we get to volunteer at the Saint Lucia Crocodile Center and learn about the different types of crocodiles including the Nile Crocodile, Dwarf Crocodile, Slender-Snout Crocodile as well as the American Alligator. The role of the center is to monitor and research crocodiles in the area and rehabilitate and release problem and injured crocodiles. The Six Enclosure Project When we reached the Crocodile Center our group was separated into two teams. For half of the day Renata and I worked on the Six Enclosure Project. The enclosures will be used to rescue and rehabilitate more crocodiles. Our job was working on clearing the area so that they could start work on the enclosure. It was tiring work as we machete through the long grasses, and cut ... read more

Veyane Cultural Village Today is our first volunteer day with VESA. Our first stop was the Veyane Cultural Village where we learned about Zulu culture. We learned some Zulu phrases which I have now forgotten. Furthermore, we witnessed and took part in some interesting Zulu dances, wore some traditional Zulu dress and explored comforting Zulu homes. After the Zulu cultural center tour we had lunch at the village and then it was off to our first volunteer destination: The Emdoneni Cheetah Project. The Emdoneni Cheetah Project At the Emdoneni project we didn't have time to volunteer but we got the opportunity to learn about the conservation efforts at the lodge. The aim of the Emdoneni Cheetah Project is to care for and rehab orphaned or injured Cheetahs, Serval Cats, African Wildcats and Caracals (Lynx). Also they ... read more

Durban airport We arrived at the Durban airport around 11:00am. At the airport we had to wait for rest of the group members and their flights to arrive. Finally by late afternoon all the flights arrived and we were introduced to the VESA team leaders who were managing the trip for the next two weeks. VESA Team Leaders The team leaders for the trip included Damaris, Zine, Andrew, Frankie, Jake and Cassie. We also got to meet fellow travelers from all across Canada, Thailand and United States. Then we were off for the long drive from Durban airport to the picturesque Saint Lucia, a small town in a World Heritage site. Beeing in South Africa now for about 1 week, the day of the arrival of our spiritual master, Paramahamsa Vishwananda, finally had arrived. He was expected at Durban airport at around 1 pm. So we took it slowly in the morning. We slept in late, and went to the empty beach for our daily morning meditation. It is always so amazing to meditate on the beach, especially when it is empty and one is not distrubed by cows or dogs (this is what happens in India always :-)). Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely breakfast in our appartment and then it was time to get ready With our friends we jumped into the car and drove south to Durban airport which was about a 30 minute drive. At the airport it was a big reunion of our ... read more

Coming from the spectacular Drakensberg and driving into the suburbs of Durban was quite a change for us. Finally the rain started to ease and by reaching the suburbs of Durban it completely stopped. Durban was surprisingly green and hilly. For whatever reason we expected it to be flat and dusty. But no, it was green, hilly with lots of exocitcs flowers blossoming. But it was hot and humid! For 6 days we had been on an average height of about 1700 metres where it gets a bit chilly in the evening. Not so in Durban - it was definitely a different climate. But nice for a change for us, for sure! We navigated through the highway to our accomodation in Durban North. We had opted for a room a bit out of town, because we ... read more

In every country we go, we associate a certain smell with it, a certain feeling. The air is different, the sky is different, the dust ist different (if there is any), water tastes different. Did not Desmond Tutu talk about this in his opening speech of the FIFA World Championship in 2010? He sais: "Can you feel it? Can you touch it? This is Africa." By visiting the Northern Drakensberg we had exactly this feeling: "this is Africa". It was the dust, the smell, the smiles of the superfriendly people, the joy of life, the joy of love which we experienced. And well, also this mindblowing, amazing landscape. Of course, the Drakensberg is just one facette of South Africa. But it was exactly here, int he beginning of our trip that we really got it: we ... read more

Saw the last of the ‘Big 5’ this morning 10 mins from the end of our final game drive in South Africa. Not only did we spot the elusive leopard in the shade on the opposite side of a dried up river bed, but she had 2 cubs with her! After three days tracking, it was a real climax to finally see them. Beautiful creatures, even though, the previous night we had heard her asphyxiating an Impala in the deep bush. Thankfully we didn’t see that. But that’s Mother Nature. The circle of life. We saw the carcass this morning though. Stripped to the bone. The trip notes were vague but described our tented accommodation as basic. Uh uh. We have never even had a luxury hotel suite that come close to these tented lodges. And ... read more

Pretty soon, it will be a full year since we moved to Shelly Beach. I have to calculate exactly the time we spent home, but I would guess it's around 5 months last year for me. So if you are asking me, I have only one regret, that we did not move earlier. Simple life, simple days....amazing experience and great new friends would qualify our day to day routine! Here is a simple day for me at home in South Africa. Depending of the wind conditions, we may meet early to be able to launch for the dive! This is the open Indian Ocean, sea and wind can be ferocious....so the calmer it is, the best it is. A normal day would be meeting at the dive center at 7am....for this, I wake up at 6.45am...brush ... read more
