After the three days in Durban I was very excited to go diving in Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks. I had been expecting this for some time now. Both places are among the best dive spots in SA and have a worldwide reputation as well. This area is home to a number of different shark species. The most common ones are the Oceanic Blacktip sharks and the Sand Tiger sharks(raggies), which can be encountered year round. Depending on the time of year, Hammerhead sharks and Tiger sharks can be seen as well. And for the “lucky” divers, they’ll spot a Great White or Zambezi sharks (Bull sharks) from time to time.... read more

A divetrip to Umkomaas near Durban. 3 days of beautiful diving over christmas 2011 (Dec 23rd-25th 2011). I found some more great dive buddies and dive guides in Walter, Jilles and Barbara. Had absolutely amazing days above and under water! Thanks guys! Come with me! Join me for a dive into diving with sharks at Aliwal Shoal. The sharks we encountered down there were mostly oceanic blacktips, wonderful elegant and majestic creatures. Enjoy! I had three days of diving with Barbara, Walter and Jilles, three great reef dives at Aliwal Shoal (I will try to make another blog soon). On two of them we saw the raggedtooth sharks, and I had three great shark dives. We saw between twenty and maybe more then fifty oceanic blacktip sharks. On two of the dives there were tigersharks around, ... read more

I went for some beautiful reef dives at Aliwal Shoal between Dec23rd and 25th. A day normally had two dives, one reef dive earlier in the morning, followed by a baited shark dive later in the morning. The reef dives went down to 27m maximum depth. I was diving with Barbara and Jilles, and Walter as boat captain. Enjoy a selecton of pictures from these wonderful dives at Aliwal Shoal...... read more

After a week in Shanghai, I made my way to Lubumbashi...few flights, with stop in Hong Kong and Johannesburg. My usual trip to Lubumbashi, visiting great friends and working for a week. Than last Sunday, after few short nights, Lubumbashi-JNB-Durban. Landed in Durban at 6pm and it was already pitch black....you know, it's winter here, and by 5pm, it gets seriously dark. I pick up my rental car and headed 85km South of the airport...passing on the highway through Durban, but not seeing anything of the city. I made my way to Umkomaas. I'm sure you've never heard of the place...and actually, this is the second blog ever on this place on travelblog. It's diving time! I first heard of the place while diving nearly 2 years ago in Zanzibar. The French divemaster told me...if you ... read more

Last year, when I was on the Destiny getting my scuba diving certification, my South African friends would tell me how great the diving is in their country. It has always been part of my plan to go diving while here. I love diving, but it can be an expensive hobby. So while nearly every place I’ve been along the coast claims great diving and offer dive packages, I’ve waited to go to “the best” - The Aliwal Shoal. The Aliwal Shoal is about 40 kilometres south of Durban, near the town of Umkomaas. Jacques Cousteau himself rated it as one of the 10 best dive sites in the world. Thus why I picked that to be my dive spot for this trip. Late last night, the Baz Bus dropped me off at the dive lodge, ... read more
