In the morning we all got up at a good time to go to the next hotel. The hotel is located in the mountains they have even got snow like Canada. Right now it's summer in South Africa and winter in Canada much better climate still a little to hot. We watch too movies on the way to the hotel. One was a really good! It's called Blind Side. A true story about a kid named Michel who becomes a really good Foot Ball player. It had a good ending. When we got to the hotel we had some down time. I went and played soccer with the boys I had really bad shoes for soccer and ended up hurting my foot by kicking the ball around. We had are supper then went to bed for ... read more

So what is a Bush babe? Not the cute, furry primate you find in the bush climbing up trees, although there are many cute babes in our group of all ages, the youngest being 6 months old – it might take a while for her to get her drivers licence, though! You could possibly find us wearing fur too (feaux fur of course, because we are all animal lovers!). What's more, we do go to the bush as well as many other places, doing our own form of climbing in 4x4's on off road trails, testing our skills. But that's not all we do. We try out new adventures, pumping natural adrenalin through our bodies while amongst other things, going abseiling, scuba diving, sand boarding and swimming with dolphins. Another priority of ours is to be ... read more

'Southern Africa, Land of Beauty and Splendour'by Thomas Victor Bulpin, a Readers Digested edition. Many years ago I bought this book with it's dramatic pictures of storms approaching and breathtaking scenic photography. It ignited the fire in me to see more of South Africa, one of the catalysts that drew me towards the Drakensberg in the late 1970's for a holiday. South Africa was a land of contrasts then and is even more so today. Paul's mom visited us from Cape Town for a few weeks in June this year and we decided to take her on a short trip to one of our favourite places for a weekend, because we knew she would enjoy it there. At the age of 79, we love to give her the opportunity to go away with us while she ... read more

I took a detour driving from the coast to coast route to get to the Drakensberg or "Dragon Mountain" (Drakensberg). It took about 3 1/2 hours to drive from Ballito (a small beach town near Durban) and arrive in the northern part of the Drakensberg, where I went to check out a place to stay and of which I had heard very good comments (Amphiteater Backpackers). It turned out to be good decision after good decision. I loved the area and the lodge was one of the best places I've stayed so far in SA. Here's a link to the lodge: http://www.amphibackpackers.co.za/. The lodge itself is pretty isolated, so without a car it's difficult to do tours on your own or buy food if you want to cook your know stuff. Those things apart, the property ... read more

Day 6-11 Hogsback-Drakensberg-Johannessburg. After a wet night in Hogsback, and Simon having a few wins on the pool table we set off back in our big yellow truck for Lesotho (pronounced Les suit too). Lesotho is a very small kingdom of 2 million people completely landlocked by South Africa with mountains and highland. It is a constitutional monarchy and unfortunately the 3rd poorest country in the world, with unemployment between 30-50%. After making it through the border crossing with no dramas, the drive into Lesotho, with beautiful mountain views and waving village people made us start to feel like we were in real Africa. Settling into our cute and picturesque campsite in the town of Malealea we decided to go for a run through the village. Not an easy run in the heat, altitude, general lack ... read more

As we finished early at KwaZulu Natal, we decided to fly to Bloemfontein to exlpore the city of Roses. This city is beautiful and the people are friendly, as we all know that this place is well known for its beautiful history and the Its also called the judiicial caoital of South Africa since 1910. Theres a lot of things to enjoy at this hostitable city, things like anglican cathedral, bonoyical gardens, fountain, antional museum, national womans memorial, sand du plessis theatre and the state president swart park, kings park and zoological gardens. like I said the Bloemfontein is full of history and a lot of old buildings with the history of our country. there is also an appeal court, which is the largest court in the country. Celebrating our 10th year wedding anniversary, we decided to head to the mountains! How better to celebrate an adventurous 10 years with a peaceful weekend. Golden Gate Highlands National Park has great options. We love breaking away with the boys. So yes, the boys joined us! March is quite cool in the eastern Free State, especially in the highlands. And lighting the fire were such a treat for the boys! For all of us... The view from our cabin were breathtaking! We could touch the clouds! No really! When we opened the curtains, we had the clouds rolling over our front porch. And the sun were hidden from our eyes behind the thickest clouds. We explored the beautiful surrounding landscape and co... read more

For my free weekend I decided to visit an area in South Africa called Drakensberg, and stay at the Cathedral Peak Hotel. The scenery here is easily the most beautiful I have ever seen and if you like the outdoors and activities such as hiking and mountain biking you have to come here at least once in your life. The Drakensberg mountain range is the highest in South Africa, and it has also been listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. It's located in South Africa but some of the mountains extend into Lesotho, which is a country that's actually located totally within South Africa. The area has developed quite a bit in the past 10 years or so and now has several resorts and hotels in the region. I decided to stay at the ... read more

My final destination on my big adventure was South Africa, where I had arranged to volunteer at a big cat sanctuary called Cheetah Experience :(http://www.cheetahexperience.com/) in Bloemfontein for 3 weeks. I have to admit it was quite a culture shock going from living the aussie life down under to living in Africa, more so than I could have ever imagined. After a few days though I settled in and within no time at all Bloem became my home and the other volunteers were my family. Each country I visited over the 3 months was so insanely different, it was a struggle to adapt sometimes, but it made life a lot more interesting! So, we were living in a volunteer house just down the road from the sanctuary, and wow it was such luxury after backpacking for ... read more
