Once we finally left the school I was talking to the head teacher about the shooting in Colorado because she knew I was from the states she mentioned that they don't have mass shootings in south Africa. Yeah they can have gang shootings over turf and stuff but you don't hear about any serial killers or anything. That's mainly in other more developed countries and I began to think about that and how strange that is. And if course the psychology behind such a thing. It would seem that more people in the us have better lives and better means and yet they are more likely to act out against society than others who don't have means. Although I guess they don't really know the other side. I also think that killers like those have something wrong in their brain and I wonder why people in other countries would not have that defect. she had also mentioned that the shootings lately had gone down because of Nelson mandelas birthday. Everyone celebrates it here it's not really like how we have George washingtins birthday, they even had signs on the plane and everything it's very interesting. My guess would be yts one
of their most popular holidays.
The next place we stopped was at the boardwalk which was okay nothing special. It did have an African shop in it that I may go back to in udder to buy some souvenirs. Afterwards we went to emerald square (which is funny) which is basically just a supermarket. Since it was Stephanie's birthday we bought fixings for a cake and then I bought some chips and strawberries. Everyone was going to play a drinking game later but since I've never drank before we decided that I would start with wine coolers so I bought a 6 pack of strawberry ones for 5$
Once we finally got back to the park it was lunchtime and we had ground beef over spaghetti. It was alright.
Then it was play time with the animals. I went in with the tigers fie a little while but they were playing with each other so we couldn't really pet them so we all took pics instead and watched eachothers backs and man is that difficult always trying to keep your eye on 4 tigers while they are running around!
I then went into the hyenas of course to see Ed
which is always fun. Him and shanzi wee trying so hard not to fall asleep while sucking our fingers. The cutesy part was when we came in saying hi puppies! Ed came over and curled up right on my lap and took my finger. You could tell when they fell asleep because they would stop sucking on your finger ugh cutest thing ever!
After Ed I went to say hey to the servals who are pretty chill. Max just lays in the sun and at that time if the afternoon there is only one sunny spot so you know exactly were to find him. He just sits there and lets you per him. The servals are the place to go if you want to be with an animal but don't feel like being on high alert.
It was feeding time and since I was on lions I should have gone to go get the cow leg but other people who had done meat prep for me (since I was at the school I didn't do it) and then during feed time the lions and tigers had switched enclosures again and it's always such a big deal to change them so
they tried but it didn't work. Then Ashley who has been working with animals since he was 13 went in and I thought he was going to help switch them but he didn't he just started playing with him. They can jump on him and he'll play with them and stuff it's just so amazing to watch because he's so good at it! None of the volunteers are like that haha. So by the time I stopped being mesmerized by him the other volunteers had all finished with the feedings. Oops...
For dinner kitty made baked potato casserole and some broccoli with cheese and this weird mix between hit dig and sausage. The casserole was yummy. The broccoli not that bad but it tasted a little funny compared to the broccoli at home, the hit dig however was nasty, I ate it though because I didn't want to waste it since other people go starving and we were told to try not to waste food.
Stephanie made brigaderos which are some type of Brazilian dessert that tastes like caramel chocolate they were amazing. While we were doing dished we decided yo stop and have the cake and sing happy birthday.
The cake was actually pretty yummy and it was made from scratch.
In the way back to the cabins there was a bunch of round poop scattered across the floor that we were laughing at because the animal must have been walking abs pooping, so of course I mentioned molliee 😉 someone said it looked like the brigaderos so Stephanie said aww now you know my secret. It was hilarious but it is so hard to laugh when you are trekking up a hill....for me anyway.
When we went back to the cabins I decided to stay in, the night before we had gone to the communal cabin and tried to watch a movie but it hadn't finished downloading yet so we watched happy Gilmore (well we ran happy Gilmore running in the background as we talked) which was fun but we went in too late and I was exhausted. And so ends day number 2.
