We still ended up leaving Tamba really late, around 5:30 in the evening. To get to the park you have to follow the road to Kedougou until Dar Salam, then follow a dirt road to Simenti. Simenti is a small village within the park with several hotels. I was under the impression that we’d be staying there, within the park. The truck, however, came to a stop in front of a campement in Dar Salam. They informed us that the park was closed and we’d have to stay here. It was annoying, but there was nothing we could do. In the morning, me, Luke, Arona, our guide, and our driver piled back into the old Nissan truck to visit Niokolo-Koba National Park. We payed way too much for what it ended up being, but it was ... read more

On Sunday night, Luke and I met two girls headed for Tambacounda the following morning. Since we needed to go to the bank in Tamba, we decided to join them. We met them at the bus station at 8AM and found a sept-place with some Senegalese men. The ride to Tamba was smooth and fast, and we got dropped off at the bank early in the day. Luke sat outside with our backpacks while I went in. The tiny bank was totally packed! People were cramming on benches, lining the walls, and crowding around the counters. I had no idea where to go, and nobody seemed inclined to help me. I started asking random people and finally made my way up to one of the counters. Since they weren't able to exchange dollars, I gave the ... read more

We were up and headed for the bus station at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning. During dinner the night before, the Peace Corps volunteer had told us about a great waterfall nearby. She said the best way to get there is to take the bus that goes once a week to that area for the weekly market. When Luke and I got to the bus station, we found our white friends crammed into a totally full minibus. As we were trying to buy tickets (little scraps of notebook paper with the price written on them), everybody started piling out of the minibus. For some reason, the transport people decided they wanted to send a big dump truck-type-thing instead of the bus. We bought our tickets and climbed up into the truck. After it had ... read more

Tambacounda, is where I'm staying for the night. This town is a major crossroads between Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Gambia, and for the Niokola Koba National Park. Niokola Koba Park, is Senegal's major national park - its residents include elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, water buck, bush buck, kob, baboons, buffaloes, monkeys, warthogs, antelopes and hartbeest. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to visit the park or make my way to Guinea - I'll decide that in the morning. I'll go into more detail now about recent events: TUESDAY 25 JANUARY I left the relative comfort of the Hotel in Ziguinchor to make my way towards the Guinea border. The taxi driver that took me to the garage told me that I needed to go to Kolda first and then catch a connecting bus to Tambacounda. ... read more
