Okay where did we leave off? I think we were about to go to Bright Future. This place is absolutely amazing and made me wish I had more time in Mbarara. Sheila, the head woman, is totally exhausted but such an inspiration. She has taken the often broken system of orphanages in Uganda and tried to downsize it so it was more of a family dynamic. This smaller size (13 children currently) allows her to also throw in all her efforts to try to relocate the children she gets on her doorstep, from the police, from the hospital or from finding them abandoned in the bush. Unfortunately if the children are with her past one year typically they will remain there until they go out on their own. This has happened to several of her children ... read more

My visit to Uganda was now at a close. I used today to visit the national museum, and to confirm my plans for the next few weeks. The museum was overrun with school groups, so it was a bit difficult to see what little it had. What I did like was looking at the various types of uniforms they wore, which were so varied. Luckily, I had plenty of time to get to the airport for my flight to Rwanda, as the road is heavily congested. I met one traveler who told me, and showed pictures, that his group left Kampala early enough to catch their flight. However, due to the heavy congestion, they abandoned their van and flagged down boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) to carry them and their luggage to the airport. With the motorcycles swerving ... read more

We reached Rwanda after two rather long days of travel, via Johannesburg for one night. I was beginning to wonder if it would be worth it to go all that way to see a group of gorillas. I'm pleased to say my doubts were unfounded. In fact our short visit to Rwanda was much more than a visit with some amazing primates. We arrived at Kigali, the capital of Rwanda in the evening and were collected from the airport by our guide Fred who would look after us very capably for the next few days. Fred took us to a very fancy hotel via a brief city tour. Kigali proved to be a bustling city which in parts looked surprising modern and groomed. We settled in for the night in our five star digs and enjoyed ... read more

It is coming to 12:00am, and we have been climbing up and down of this steep volcano for over 1 and half hours. As we continued with the rest of the group passing through the stinging nettles, the bamboo as well as the mud, my eyes quietly glanced at these beautiful primates. I hurriedly called my friend Tom and then whispered saying there they are……. It was always my pleasure to do something special on my birthday and here I was trekking the mountain gorillas on the day of my birthday. Tom and I wanted to do something special and so chose to visit these unique primates. I became 29 years old today and this has been the most precious gift in my life. Curving hillside roads, waving kids, contagious smiles, vista views, a palate of greens, and everywhere people walking, walking, walking. On their heads they carry anything from feed for their cows to logs used in construction. And this is just a scratch on the surface of the sights and delights we discovered during our 1-week visit through Rwanda. Lured by the challenge and thrill of trekking mountain gorillas, we planned a tour of Rwanda around this central goal. However, what we discovered was that this once in a lifetime experience was just the icing on the cake of exploring this nascent country full of promise and gentle people working hard together toward a harmonious community and clean environment. Rural Rwanda is farmland. Potatoes, beans, rice, and tea are common crops, as well as the ubiquitous banana trees. ... read more

Today was our last day for some of us, as the trip officially ended tomorrow, but I had to leave early so Alison could go on her vacation, and a couple others were in the same boat. Our breakfast at 7, left the hotel by 8 and our drive to Kigali from Musanze was just over 2 hours and we got to the Genocide Museum in a decent amount of time. A very sobering experience and I was looking forward to going while at the same time dreading the after effects of it. I’ve been to a few memorials now, and they are never a positive experience but we as a society can hopefully learn and grow from it and one day somehow, find a way to end all the hatred that is out there. We ... read more

The day had finally arrived; I was going to see ‘my’ gorillas in Volcano’s National Park in Rwanda. I have been coveting this travel experience for over 15 years and it was hard not to bounce around like Tigger from Winnie-The-Pooh, so I focused very much on trying to be calm (yoga breathing helped) but not sure I really pulled off the 'zen'! We got to the entrance to Volcano's National Park, saw some traditional Rwandan performers and dancers welcoming us and then met our guide Ignacio who gave us the briefing. Trackers had left before dawn to find the individual family locations and once our group got to them, we would get to spend an hour with them. We were to be very quiet, and to stay 7 metres away from them and not do ... read more

Today was another long drive but we were on our way to Rwanda! I quickly began singing “We’re off to see the gorillas, the wonderful gorillas of Rwanda” to the Wizard of Oz music, while the extra syllables made it a bit difficult I couldn’t stop. To say I was excited and vibrating with enthusiasm is an understatement; 15 years I'd been waiting for this experience and it was still 24 hours away but I was on a travel/wildlife HIGH! The boarder crossing was relatively painless; we had to physically walk across while Paul and Sam took care of vehicle registrations separately. We stood in line for a while and got asked the same questions by the guard, who after the 4th white Canadian girl finally clued in we were all together (despite our best efforts ... read more

A few overland trucks stopped by while I was around and I had a good time reminiscing how the long organized tours could be. Other than that there was a few characters that would show up on the regular such as Jean D’Amore. This cat was amazeballs….He was one of the best politician personality types that I have ever met…if that makes sense…he was soooo funny and had something to say in such a correct but funny way that I always laughed and supported whatever weird nonsense he was spouting. LOVED IT. Not only was he a funny man, but finishing up his PhD and running all kinds of charity things and UN work, etc etc etc. This guy also had a flock of turkeys in his city center home as well as a bunch of ... read more

Well the rest of the week was spent enjoying my surroundings and cooking my face off. Also turns out that the two workers I was training, Faustin and Katie, had started there one day before me. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!! So we collaborated a lot on what types of food these guys knew how to cook already and what was possible with the limits of our ingredients and kitchen equipment. Best part about the new situation is that these guys have French in their wheelhouse and a ton of cooking terms are French terms. So that was a lot of fun for me to describe a method in French and have them understand without me having to explain the shit out of every little knife movement or process on how to cook something. Fun! Throughout the ... read more
