Background: In 1959, three years before independence from Belgium, the majority ethnic group, the Hutus, overthrew the ruling Tutsi king. Over the next several years, thousands of Tutsis were killed, and some 150,000 driven into exile in neighboring countries. The children of these exiles later formed a rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), and began a civil war in 1990. The war, along with several political and economic upheavals, exacerbated ethnic tensions, culminating in April 1994 in the genocide of roughly 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The Tutsi rebels defeated the Hutu regime and ended the killing in July 1994, but approximately 2 million Hutu refugees - many fearing Tutsi retribution - fled to neighboring Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, and the former Zaire. Since then, most of the refugees have returned to Rwanda, but about 10,000 that remain in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo have formed an extremist insurgency bent on retaking Rwanda, much as the RPF tried in 1990. Despite substantial international assistance and political reforms - including Rwanda's first local elections in March 1999 and its first post-genocide presidential and legislative elections in August and September 2003, respectively - the country continues to struggle to boost investment and agricultural output, and ethnic reconciliation is complicated by the real and perceived Tutsi political dominance. Kigali's increasing centralization and intolerance of dissent, the nagging Hutu extremist insurgency across the border, and Rwandan involvement in two wars in recent years in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to hinder Rwanda's efforts to escape its bloody legacy.

Haggling Trial Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali
I've just been fired from blogging. -Alex Anyways, on Sunday we went to the Artist Village in Kigali. It was an outdoor mall of shops the size of large, walk-in closets and no indoor lighting. We were immediately taken as suckers and ushered into the nearest shop. Nothing has price tags, and we are VERY obviously mozungas (foreigners). Quickly, we learned that if you pause to look at something and especially if you stop to pick it up, it means you really really want to buy it. The next step is to ask the price, and due to our mozunga-ness, everything [View Full Entry]

On Friday, the Embassy trusted Alex enough to loan him a Land Cruiser so we have wheels for the first time. On Saturday, we drove all over the city of Kigali with two couples from Alex's work. We attempted to go to the farmer's market to buy vegetables and crafts, but it was closed due to a local election. Instead, we came to the shopping mall which is reminiscent of the Blazy Mall in Soldotna when it had Mugz. We are currently eating at a Starbucks-like cafe, where Alex got food poisoning yesterday, but the only place we have found with [View Full Entry]

We flew into the airport on a Sunday evening. Looking out the window of the plane, there were so few lights that it looked more like flying over North Kenai than a city of almost a million people. We walked down the stairs onto the runway and into warm smoky air. Upon entering the airport, we were met by a U.S. Embassy employee who led us into a separate room with leather couches while he took care of our paperwork. In the airport lobby, we were met by Portia, the Embassy nurse, and her husband John, the director of the Peace [View Full Entry]

The guy on the left aint that small either...
Yesterday I joined a local gym which is another great example of something that is seemingly insignificant to most of my readers but a fascinating experience in East Africa. Avoiding the usual expat trap, I decided to boycott the more expensive Novotel Hotel gym and opt for the real deal; local, cheap, smelly and certainly authentic..grrrr. My gym is part of the national football stadium (Amohoro) which is just up the road from my house and costs a grand total of 22 GBP per month. Entering the weights arena for the first time was pretty intimidating. After overcoming the usual stares [View Full Entry]

He's smiling because I just paid 10x more than what it should have been.
Yup you guessed it, this is the part where I talk about how much I appreciate all of the things I used to take for granted. The concept really hit home when I found myself stuffing my ruck sack with as much French wine and Swiss chocolate as was physically possible at Entebbe international. In fact, there was something quite romantic about it, akin to the soldier returning to the front line bringing luxuries from foreign lands. Here is a list all of the things which are not easily accessible here: Food Vegetables (beyond flaccid carrots and prune like green peppers) [View Full Entry]

Work Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali
For those of who you may be from the coffee world and reading this, here is a little more on the actual work that I’m doing here. For those of you who are not, well at worst you will be bored by this and at best you may learn a little something. The first project is an analysis of the effectiveness of The Ethiopian Commodities Exchange. The exchange was launched in April of 2008 in an effort to improve the former auction system for coffee and other commodities such as grains and sesame. Conceptualized and managed by one extraordinary lady, Dr. [View Full Entry]

I’m shifting the nature of this blog from which is process driven (listing the days/weeks activities) to one which also documents my thoughts as my journey unfolds....so today a word on being interested. Something I love about being in Africa is just how amazingly inquisitive the people are here. Literally not a day goes by when someone doesn’t come up to me and bombard me with the funniest questions. They wanna know where im going, what i have bought at the supermarket, how many brothers and sisters I have and what sports I play. Its refreshing to see people being genuinely [View Full Entry]

Bits and Bobs  Africa » Rwanda » Ville de Kigali » Kigali
Wednesday - quiz night - weirdest evening ever. Turned up, a couple of other strange expats, weird questions, terrible food....nuf said! Thursday was a pretty interesting evening. I got invited to join a poker school out here with mainly Belgian and French guys. When i did finally make it to the house (with the help of a few helpful Rwandees) I was quite amazed at how 'the other half' live. The guy was a diplomat for the European Union and his house was literally ridiculous. Like one of those drug lord mansions that you see in the movies with big white [View Full Entry]

Coffee is stored in these drums before being dried t obtain the appropriate moisture levels.
Today was a real eye opener for me and my first ever visit to a dry processing mill...as you can imagine I was in coffee heaven. Today I met with a group called Rwacof which is an exporter owned by a Swiss trading group in Geneva. After a brief meeting with the CEO and head of exports, Gabrielle the plant manager gave me a full tour. This was a priceless education for me. I have read tons of books detailing these processes and there have always been so many questions which today finally got answered (No jokes, I actually may sleep [View Full Entry]
