the things that have happened! i tucked out of mtwara on sunday. saturday night my friend Osman had his wedding party in a strange square roofless courtyard of red brick, big enough to host the entire village inside. the stars and moon and some dusty clouds were the light as a team of young fellows continually fed an old CD player that was hooked up to some very big speakers in the corner. from the far end of the village and up the ridge to the old boma hotel, about two kilometers walk, the Swahili hip-hop came through clear enough. the center of the courtyard was occupied by fifty boys in their mid twenties, dancing away in a very African american brooklyn way. around the edges of this mass some very young children, aged five to ... read more

i am deep south. the world has changed now from loose tree scapes and lonely long low shrub plains into the Africa you can imagine before having been, the one from movies and books. wide fields of incredible tall yellow grass in the wind with wild twisting trees poking up and lending shade to those old rusty bicycles and their rusty riders that take long breaks from the angry African sun. the road is thin and cuts to and fro and over subtle hills through the land past mud villages thatched with the very same tall yellow grass, but dried into shimmering light brown and bound in small bunches, tied down by coconut husk rope. they don't run any business from their villages in the south, they keep a few goats and chickens about for their ... read more

We finally arrived in Mozambique and I have to say it was well worth the effort! The white beaches, faded Portuguese charm, some of the most pristine corals I've ever seen, rock formations rearing up out of nowhere before melting back into the green expanses or red earth plains made it one of the most scenically dramatic countries yet and that's saying something after the Serengeti! It was also, seemingly, one of the most advanced in terms of male and female equality we'd been to in Africa so far (not that that is saying much to be honest!). It would seem that women here are not expected to be covered from mid bicep to knee and they are allowed some social time. In the other parts of Africa we've visited thus far most of the local ... read more

So I know it had been a while since I last wrote, and maybe the one or two of you who read this are a little curious to know what the hell has been happening to me over the last month. I will get to that, but first, I want to tell you all a story of courage, bravery, and a person succeeding despite bumbs in the road, and against all odds. So, if you have skipped ahead to look at my pictures in true 1st grader fashion, you will already know that I shaved my hair into a mohawk style for our swearing in ceremony on December 7. I did it and a bunch of other guys did it as well. Make comments if you wish about it being a bit immature and something maybe ... read more

Hey, Arrived in Mozambique on Monday off the ferry from Malawi. After three days of travelling on the back of trucks and in crammed minibuses with chickens and goats etc. we have arrived in Nampula a bustling third world town. We are finding it very hard to communicate with the locals as we don´t speak Portuguese! From here we are heading to Ilha de Mozambique which is an island off the coast and then going to Bazuruto Archiepalgo for some beach chilling paradisical time. The people seem just as great as the Malawians but a lot prouder and a little richer but not by much! Sorry for boring blog updates but computers are painfully slow and expensive to use but we will definitely upload photos when we get to South Africa. Love Dan and Alex x ... read more

It's great when you have three days of motorbike riding madness in front of you to remember that when the destination is reached you can reap the rewards of cheap fresh seafood and even more refreshing cocktails! Leaving the delights of Malawi was comforted by the fact that the women were even more beautiful in Mozambique flaunting outrageously bright-coloured kangas and matching head-dress....slightly distracting! The roads were a disruptive disaster of zigzags across the 'almost completed' new road dipping in and out of river-fords then back onto dry chokingly dusty dirt roads, the journey broken up by our first flat tyre of the trip! Not to worry, 15 helpers suddenly appeared out of nowhere to claim a chance to help the muzungu or at least stand around and stare! And boy can they stare...for hours and ... read more

The fish eagle's cry. A peregrine falcon meticulously plucking and eating his breakfast of what appears to be a wader of some description, given the length of avian legs hanging off the branch. The self-important chattering of a giant kingfisher as it takes up its perch on the dead tree near the Lake shore... but only once the falcon has vacated the premises. A bearded scrub-robin hammering the local ant population, with our vocal encouragement. A slender mongoose with his reptilian breakfast hanging out either side of his mouth. The dassies among the rocks, playing peek-a-boo with the visiting humans. Iridescent-coloured skinks scuttling around the paths and rocks, their progress suddenly frozen when a human appears. A briefly-glimpsed otter. The ever-entertaining antics of a troop of vervet monkeys playing in the trees and bushes, their ... read more

My last day in Mozambique turned into one of those rare, unique days that you could never plan. I awoke early, with the sun, as you do camping in Africa. That was ok; it is a beautiful view from my tent. Today I had a very “busy” day. Actually I had no idea how I was going to fill the 24 hours until the ferry arrived. After all, I was the only mazungo in Metangula and as far as I knew in the whole of Niassa province. I thought I might wander the 8ks into town and shop at the market or maybe just walk around the countryside, who knows. I wasn’t in any particular hurry in the morning. After breakfast I washed my clothes and then sat and watched the guys play cards in the ... read more

Tonight: Nampula Tomorrow: Train to Cuampa, then Lichinga Wednesday: Metangula and Lake Malawi But in the last week or so I've been around Ihla de Mocambique and Nacala. The short story is the Ihla was the original Portoguese capital of the region. As it stands now it is a very run down town with lots of historical ruins. Walking around the streets you can easily see the Portoguese influence and architecture. The old fort is still standing, barely. The original chapel, which is believed to be the oldest European structure in the southern hemisphere is in good shape. One thing that was really strange is that many (most) of the houses were below street level. It was like you would walk down steps into these little shanty towns. Very strange. It was good to spend a ... read more

After spending days at a time travelling between destinations in NTHN Mozambique, our journey from Ihla do Mocambiqe to Pemba was refreshingly straight forward, not forgetting ofcourse the standard fight for a fair price and resulting argument over change with local vendors and conductors keen to try and pull the wool over our eyes. Even after misreading the map in our guidebook and walking the long way to Russells Campismo, about 10km long, we still managed to arrive mid afternoon. Russell was an expat Aussie from the Sunshine Coast but he wasn't around when we arrived. The only other guest was a Belgian named Gareth who had ridden his pushbike from Durban and who quickly apologised for not giving us a lift when he had passed us earlier that afternoon. One of the staff showed us ... read more
