I wouldn’t be having the full tourist experience in Morocco if I didn’t ride a camel, I thought. Up at the top of the mountain where the original city of Agadir was located before a massive earthquake levelled it in 1960, there were young Berber men offering camel rides to visitors. Not the authentic riding-through-the-bleached-sand-dunes-of-the-desert kind of camel ride; but the short-walk-down-the-asphalt-road-and-then-back-up-again kind of camel ride. Tourist camel ride extraordinaire. No complaints though. Believe me, I felt the history when that camel stood up. Being near to that huge animal with big, blue eyes and then perched up high upon his back - and I mean, wa-a-a-ay up high on his back - felt sensational! I immediately imagined what it would be like to travel extreme distances in this way. It’s not a smooth ride, but ... read more

Sometimes I stay awake after everyone has gone to sleep so that I can reflect on my day, or even life in general, in peace. That is what I am doing right now. I’ve been in Agadir for four days now and I’m feeling pretty settled in. I really like this city. Aziz had to leave today and that just sucks. He is such an enjoyable person to travel with. Like Hassan, he has spent the majority of his life living outside of his native country; and so he has a very wide perspective of the world. He gets me and my Caucasian ways. I get to be where I am the most comfortable with Aziz and Hassan: one of the boys. They don’t think it’s weird that I prefer to hang around with men in ... read more

October 13th, 2018 Altight! Here I am writing again. I would have done so in the car last night, but the road from Essaouira to Agadir was unexpectedly winding and narrow. In the dark and in the backseat my stomach rebelled. Yup, I came very close to upchucking my supper. Also, the day in Essaouira was so all consuming both mentally and physically, that my brain turned to oatmeal by the end of the day. So let’s back up. Essaouira. Ok, so I told you already that seeing too many tourists irks me. I mean, if I wanted to see white people everywhere, I’d stay in Canada. Sorry my white peeps, but we are a boring and entitled bunch; a glaringly obvious fact when you observe “our kind” in non-European dominated countries, taking in the local ... read more

There was definitely something wrong with the coffee I drank at an unfamiliar cafe today. I’m pretty certain it was the milk. Minutes after I finished it, my stomach started to grumble and my upper intestines cramped up with a vengeance. Ooo ya. This was definitely an urgent situation. knew I had a very limited amount of time to get home and to the toilet; but staying in control of my revolting bowels for the 15 minutes it took to walk back to Yassine’s apartment was imperative. It was a painful battle that neared defeat on my side. Almost immediately after I stepped out of the bathroom door I was informed that everyone was getting ready to go out for supper. Oh boy, I thought, with the battle won, the war continues. Staying home and near ... read more

Our taxi driver Mohammad drove us to Essaouira From Marrakech. No English no Spanish no French, he only spoke Berber and Moroccan Arabic, it was difficult to communicate with him. Sign language along with my limited Arabic vocabulary was a little helpful. But he drove us safe to and from Essaouira. He took a couple of smoke breaks at some tea house along the way. The highway between Marrakech and Essaouira is quite straight forward. The landscape is arrid and spread with olive and Argon tree groves. In a couple of locations along the highway the Shepard’s encourage their goats to climb the Argon tree to eat its fruits and when people such as ourselves stop to take pictures of this unusual scene they ask us to pay them. It is hilarious and worth the 10 ... read more

Souk to souk to souk A maze of streets alleys walkways Some covered some not Carpets felt cotton ceramics leather metal work wood work clothing ... Colors are vibrant It is dynamic beyond words stimulating and beautiful My one thought on Morocco is that it is not for he faint of heart one has to have the heart for it not judge it be accepting of it and let it come to your space Only in that does one sees its beauty I highly suggest staying at the Riads the old homes or guest houses rehabbed and brought back to their original glories. One goes thru the dark alleyways wondering what will happen a little scared and apprehensive at first, the door of the Riad opens and it shines and invites you whole heartedly. One is ... read more

Majorelle Garden Palmeria Abdel Majid our very gentle tuk tuk driver drove us to the Mojorelle Garden and one of the Palm Groves outside of the old Médina Check out the link below for the Majorelle Garden and it’s beautiful cafe A must see if visiting Marrakech A piece of tranquility and calm in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city. Among many things famous for the Majorelle Blue http://jardinmajorelle.com/ang/ The Palm Groves were Arrid dirty but afforded a camel ride practice prior to our Sahara Desert excursion When in Marrakech try the delicious specialty of Tanjia made in a earth ware pot. After having our morning coffee in a little cafe in an alley way, frequented mostly by workers in the neighbouring stores and hair salon, we left Marrakech. Next stop Essouira. As much as tourist destinations rub me the wrong way - there are too many other white people and it always feels too much like I’m taking the “safe” route - I must admit that Marrakech is a beautiful city. Yes, secretly I’m a travel snob. The city is clean somewhat orderly, but not too orderly thank heavens. Between Casablanca and Marrakech, the later is definitely the prettier sister. We did visit the famous market, although a bit too late at night to see it in full swing. We went only to see it and not buy a thing - kind of like visiting a museum. ... read more

October 15th, 2018 When you have a heart like mine, you can’t travel without seeing things that make it bleed. I am incredibly sensitive to suffering existing in others. We all suffer, some quietly and some without the luxury of privacy. This post is in honour of the suffering I have witnessed in my life’s travels. This post is filled with love. My travels in Morocco today: Today, on the first leg of our journey to the Sahara desert, we pulled to the side of the highway to purchase grapes from a man a few years younger than my husband who had weathered skin from a difficult life, was missing all of his teeth but had the most gorgeous green and hazel eyes. I couldn’t help but notice what an incredibly gorgeous face he had and ... read more
