Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Life in Fez Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane » Fes
Life is good here in Fez, school is going well, though the task of actually learning Arabic is a daunting one to say the least. EVERYTHING is different in this language: the sounds are strange, the script is strang, and tiny little changs in pronounciation make drastic differences in the meaning of the word. We still haven't gone through the whole alphabet yet, but we've started with some vocabulary. My class is nice, there's an Englishman and an American girl my age, an elderly Swedish woman and An American man who came with his family. I have two teachers, Zaim and [View Full Entry]

Salaam Alekuem, I'm in Fez, the magical city that completely changed my life last year. This is so far my most favorite place in the world. To be honest, I was a little nervous about whether it would be as exotic as a I remember it: I have not been dissapointed. I started school at the Arabic Language Institute yesterday, we jumped right in and learned all the vowels and 3 consonants. There are 5 people in my class, we have 4 hours of instruction each day and an hour or 2 of homework. Tonight I move out of the hotel [View Full Entry]

I made it! Beautiful Morocco. It's as wonderful as I remember and far less intimidating the second time around. I took the ferry from Algeceris to Ceuta yesterday morning after waiting entirely too long for the pension to finish my laundry (ahh the wonders of clean clothing!) I landed in Ceuta, another geographic anomoly. Ceuta, on the North coast of Africa, is a Spanish enclave and has been since the defeat of the moors in the 16th century. I didn't stay though. Instead I crossed the border and had a wonderful time arguing with the touts over a taxi ride to [View Full Entry]

Continued from TOURING A COUNTRY WITHOUT KNOWING LOCAL LANGUAGES. Rif Mountain While moving in Fez, I met Mike, an American tourist who had been in Morocco many times in the past. I joined him and we went to a town called Ketema about 200 km away in the Rif mountain. The approach was very scenic and fascinating, the valley sides being terraced as far as the eyes can see with kif (hashish) growth, sanobar firs and cedar forests. It was a land reminiscent of Southern Spain, only seventy miles away across the Straits of Gibraltar. We left the taxi at Ketema [View Full Entry]

We start our Tour of Duty on the 18 August 2004. Our first destination was Morocco. We flew in to Malaga, Spain where we spend 1 night then the next day, we train down to Algeciras. From there we ferry across to Tangier, Morocco. One point to note that the Moroccan are not very good with time - we have experienced delayed on ferry and on train. Ferry alone was a good experience as we literally are on a cruise ship. The first thing that stuck us when we arrived at Tangier was the scorching heat. Being close to the the Sahara dessert, [View Full Entry]

21/7 The Skipper is a lazy bastard (guess who washed the deck?). And dangerously fat. And alcoholic. And he has diabetes, so he has a bit of an excuse(damn). We went to get all of the stuff from the supermarket today - I have never met anyone who was so slow at walking - he said I was not being "Spanish" enough about things. I should have said he was just a slow cunt. Half way along he went hypo (or is it hyper) glycemic. Thats what he said, but I think he just wanted to sit down and eat a [View Full Entry]

Nursed a hangover, went for a swim, got a bit sunburned today - life is hard. Stuck in Mellila, which is a Spanish port on the coast of morroco - I never heard of it and neither has any other Brit - there are no English here at all (cannot find Lineker´s Bar anywhere) so a bit of hablar espanol is required. I think the Spanish are keeping this one quiet, something to do with Gibraltar perhaps? Why stuck? The wind is going in the wrong direction and will not turn until Tuesday. The boat next to ours left this morning after [View Full Entry]

MOROCCO “Forty days in Morocco!!! Are you mad?” screamed my neighbor, Riaz. His perplexity was natural. English is rarely spoken in Morocco and the language barrier may create problems. Being determined, I boarded Emirate Airlines Boeing 777 on June 26, 04 for Casablanca. There were nearly 300 passengers. All applauded when the airplane made a smooth landing. I joined them and appreciated a good custom. Immigration formalities were brief and soon I found myself on a waiting train right in the terminal area. In about 30 minutes, the train reached the cit [View Full Entry]

All I can say about Morocco is that the weather this time of year sucks. On the coastal side of the Atlas mountains it is very wet; we have had some amazing thunder storms. The desert side has been hot and sunny during the day, but cold at night. Morocco has been interesting though, Colin has found it better than he thought (based on a previous trip), not as much hassle from touts etc. We have mostly been round cities so far, Rabat, Meknes, Casablanca, Fes and now Marrakesh. We stopped at the Roman ruins of Volubilis, walked around Todra Gorge, [View Full Entry]
