Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Hello I'm in Marakesh! Its the 2nd day of Eid, a three day celebration at the end of Ramadaan. The strets are alive here, everyone is doing their last minute shopping and the men and women are dressed in their best. Its kind of like Christmas except without Santa Claus and christmas trees and snowmen and carols and pork products. Not only that, I can actually eat lunch now that the fasting is over (thank god). Marakesh is absolutely beautiful. The buildings are all red, the gardens are all green, and one can see the snow-capped Atlas mountains in the background. [View Full Entry]

Casablanca at last Africa » Morocco

Arrived in Casablanca at sunset and treated ourselves to a hotel room with hot (well tepid) shower. I say treated as have spent last 3 nights sleeping rough. Camped in the mountains en route to Casa last night...we were just building the fire (well Neil was) and a man appeared from the shadows, and joined us round the camp fire for tuna & cous cous, cafe au lait & MOD army ration chocolate! Mohammad didn't say much and we tried the odd berber word, but he seemed happy enough sitting on my little stool...got a fright when he pulled his axe [View Full Entry]

Having loaded the car and found I could litrally walk into the boot without bending my legs it was time to fit some uprated springs and give the Landrover some pride in her appearance as she had spent the last thousand miles dragging her fat arse all the way here. So after a day in Chefchaun spending most of my time avoiding the Kif merchants, a loud wistle is the first sign one wants your attention and for at least the first 10 times it works, you always look up. The route from the border is mainly hashish farms so without [View Full Entry]

Leaving Meknes Africa » Morocco
Awaiting our rather nice dry cleaned clothes! so have time to update the journal, drink mint tea, sleep..... Heading for Azrou 100km south of Meknes then on to Casablanca to attempt a repair on my expensive semi proffessional camcorder.....I will let katherine tell you about that faux pas needless to say my coca cola stroke (damn Arabic keyboard!) Mcdonalds budget gone for the trip. Also still unsure about whether we can collect visas for Mauritania on border so will try in Casa first, saving a 2000km round trip if were wrong. N Still haven't got to grips with Ramadan - spent [View Full Entry]

I just saw the king of Morocco in his motorcade. He came to Fez last night to pray at the Karouine mosque and the tomb of Moulay Idress and spent the night in his palace (which he probably doesn't use more than a few times a year since he lives in another palace in Rabat). Today as I was walking home I found the streets blocked off and a small crowd of people waiting nearby. Not more than 10 minutes later his majesty came through in his 60s era Mercedes limosine amidst at least 20 other vehicles. I could see him [View Full Entry]

Lots of mechancial work on landrover planned for next few days...photos to follow soon we hope... [View Full Entry]

Cueta Africa » Morocco
Having arrived in Morocco on Sunday in Ramadam I am still surprised to see very little traffic in which is one of the busiest borders in Africa, across which Africans travel in a bid for the better world? and in the process often die on the final leg which can involve a lilo crossing of the med sea into spain. I know the procedure having done it before and my aim is to avoid the hustlers pay no bribes and simply wiz through the bueracratic maze, however the odds are stacked against me very few pray for these hungry looking hyenas, [View Full Entry]

Motorhome News from Europe 9. Spain November 2004 Seville, Cadiz, Jerez, Trafagar and Old Tangiers First of all, I have to add a footnote to the last newsletter, which omitted one particular birding day. When heading south from Monfrague to Aracena, where we spent a whole day driving along potholed narrow back roads, hunting for bustards. We saw loads of red kites, buzzards, black shouldered kites, great grey shrike, hoopoes and EIGHT LITTLE BUSTARDS - yes, they really do exist! More recently, here on the south coast of Spain, our usual bird sightings are of Flamingos, Egrets, Stil [View Full Entry]
