Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

As Morrocco was only 10 miles across the sea from Spain, I decided to take a group tour to Tangier in Morrocco. It was an interesting experience, full of aggressive street vendors, cheap deals and great food, and it left me with a small taste that will make me want to return and see more in the future. Here are some photos from my day trip: [View Full Entry]

Today we left Casablanca and headed out to the Capital City - Rabat. We made a stop at the Mausoleum of the Moroccan kings and drove through the grounds of the Royal Palace. Then we continued on to Tangier (Tanger). The movie - Casablanca was played so we could see what parts where really filmed there. We stopped off in another city for lunch and then continued on. We drove past Cape Spartel which is the point where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediteranean. Most of the drive was along the Atlantic and in Tangier our hotel was across the street [View Full Entry]

Today we had a 3 hour drive to Casablanca. We passed a lot of farms, donkeys, cats, melons and lots of irrigation systems. Abdul did not remind us about how they got the water from the mountains (which he tended to repeat regularly). Casablanca is on the Atlantic ocean with a big beach, huge homes and slums right next door. We took a brief tour through the Casbah with all of its shops. Very similar to an outside flea market. Casablanca (which means white house) is one of the most built up cities we have seen so far in Morocco. They [View Full Entry]

Today we were up and out at 8:30 am for a tour of the city of Marrakech. We went to the Palace of Bahia. Just like the other palaces it was beautiful. We were then given an herb demonstration at a pharmacy whwere they showed us what all of the herbs and herbal combinations can do. Then off to the bazaar (souk). There were snake charmers, monkeys and the always fun game of guess what 'dolphinchicks' nationality game is - new countries - including Morocco were added! Mom got her picture with a snake around her neck and we both ended [View Full Entry]

Today we got on the road at 8am from Fez headed to Marrakech. We basically spent the entire day on the bus. We did not arrive at the hotel until 4pm. We were at the back of the bus and there were a lot of curvy roads and bumps. I ended up moving to the front for most of the ride as I was quite nautious. (sp?) The wicked witch said nothing. We passed a lot of different towns. People were washing their clothes in the tivers and heading out to their weekly trip to the souk. We then arrived, went [View Full Entry]

Today we got a 7:30am wake up call - WAHOO! Late start! We all boarded the bus (in our proper seats) at 9am and we took a sightseeing tour of the Royal Palace. Then we went to the labrynth Medina - the old city of Fez. I am not sure how to describe it as it didn't seem real. The city population has about 4000 and it is utter chaios. With small streets and donkeys carrying very heavy loads of everything up through the maze. There is store after store after store. They sold spices and fresh meat/fish/ fruit, pastries, cell [View Full Entry]

Today we had a 5:40 am wake up call thanks to mother nature and thunder! It all worked out as we were to get on the road at 7:30 am to catch the 9am ferry to Morocco! All went well until it was itme to leave. The way the seats were arranged, each group of 2 was to move 2 rows up on the right side of the bus and 2 rows back on the left side. Sounds easy enough... well apparently it's not... So there was someone in our set, so we sat in the row ahead. We don't really [View Full Entry]

Rather excited as I've just set up my profile on Travelblog.org to document and share my impending journey to become an EFL teacher in Asia and all other traveling. Just feel though it would be a shame to not share some of my more recent past trips with others. Only really going to post photos of these trips and perhaps add some more text at a later date. Morocco: Having already enjoyed a five-week trip in February to Malaysia, Borneo, and Singapore, my trip to Morocco in June was my second time away this year, and my first with a digital [View Full Entry]

I can't help but enjoy Morocco. It feels so good to be back in an Islamic country. I got a 60 euro ticket from Paris to Casablanca(very cheap), and as soon as I left I might as well have arrived, with the Arabic and Berber music blaring in my ear, the smell of foreign food and sweat. It occurs to me that my friend Muhamad said he thought I was Moroccan before he talked to me on the bus, and I was going over all of the nationalities I've been mistaken for in the last year: English, Spanish, Portuguese(today), Afghani, [View Full Entry]
