Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Took my language test this morning. Haven't gotten the final results yet but I feel like it went well. All I had to do was sit in a room and talk to the tester for about 15 mintues in Moroccan Arabic, and he seemed pretty happy with my ability so I think they're going to let me stay ;) We've all been studying pretty hard in the last week to get ready for the test, but, more importantly, in less than a week we depart for our respective sites to begin work! Crazy! Last week I got to see my town [View Full Entry]

Marrakesh turned out to be a lovely spot, perfect weather and the Atlas mountains to explore. It's weird going up in the snow, over the top, finding the sun shining again and the desert stretching out in front of us. Marrakesh itself is an interesting place to explore especially the Old Midina, go in the evening so you see the market stalls and everybody coming out and about after a days work. Best time is dusk. Around Town Africa » Morocco » Tadla-Azilal » El Kelaa des Sraghna
I got to explore the town a bit and went to see the Dar Shebab with Daniele, the PCV who will be ending her service in Morocco the day after I get back to Kelaâ. I’m only here to visit for a few days now and have to be back in Immouzzer on the 15th for the last bit of training and to swear in as a real Volunteer. I introduced myself to most of the people in town as the “new Daniele” or “Daniele’s replacement”. She is much older than I am, so some people actually called me the younger [View Full Entry]

Kelaât Sraghna I woke up early and left the hotel while the PCTs I was sharing a room with were all still asleep. I had called Khadija, the woman I’m going to be living with for the next two months, the day before and told here I’d try to get to Kelaâ by about ten in the morning. [a note on pronunciation: I think the K should be a Q, because the sound is pronounced far back in the throat, not like an English K, but somebody had transcribed the script using a K on all maps and signs, so I [View Full Entry]

Since my site is just north of Marrakech I had two options for travel from Immouzzer: I could take a series of busses and grand taxis directly south through Beni Milal, or I could go a fairly roundabout way by taking a grand taxi from Immouzzer to Fès and then the train to Marrakech. Considering that a group of about twelve trainees were going to have to spend the night in Marrakech, I chose the latter. When we got up very early that morning I almost couldn’t believe that I was going to be taking a train to Marrakech. I had [View Full Entry]

I'm back! Community based training is officially over and we're moving onto the next phase of training. Before I get ahead of myself, though, let me tell you about all that has happened recently. Just before we last left Immouzzer we were treated to a royal visit of sorts. The king of Morocco, with his whole motorcade (which includes about 40 cars, motorcycles, and helicopters) passed through Immozzer and drove right past our compound. We got word of it about 10 minutes before he came through so we were all out on the sidewalk with a big Peace Corps sign waving [View Full Entry]

Leaving Sefrou Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane » Sefrou
One of the things that most of the CBT groups do before they leave their site is to throw a party for the families they’ve been staying with. We were going to have it at my house, but since somebody close to the family had died it would have been Hashuma. I actually heard that the small “party” we had for Asmae was considered hashuma by several neighbors, and I hope Asmae doesn’t let them get to her. So, we had the party at Nada and Michael’s house, which was next door to mine. We ordered all sorts of food made, [View Full Entry]

Adventura en AFRICA  Africa » Morocco » Fès-Boulemane » Fes
I have now experienced Africa! My journey began on the early morning of November 1st. We departed from Granada at 6am bound for Algeciras, a city Robert and I knew very well. There we met another bus of students from Sevilla and boarded the ferry to Cueta. A quick 45 min. ride across the straight of Gibraltar and we were in Africa, well...we were still in Spain technically, Ceuta is a spanish city on the continent of Africa. After a two hour delay at the boarder we finally could say, "Estamos en Africa". The first night we stayed in Fez. It [View Full Entry]

Photo notice: I am going to be changing some of the photos on my blog due to a request from Peace Corps. I will not have many photos of people from now on, since getting permission from people to put their images on my site is problematic due to my still limited language skills and what Peace Corps considers permission. Plus my camera is still on vacation. . L-Eide Saghir The day after the end of Ramadan is a celebration, mostly because we can now eat whenever we want.
