Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

After several wonderful days in Marbella, we packed up and started our journey towards Morocco. We drove all along the Spanish coast, which is absolutely stunning, quite picturesque, especially at one point where there are hundreds and hundreds of the wind turbines blowing at full speed. From the car I could see Gibraltar, the English territory in the south of Spain. We crossed the straight of Gibraltar at Tarifa and took a 40 minute ferry to Tangiers, which would be my first venture into African territory. Immediately upon arrival into Tangiers, I could really sense the complete differe [View Full Entry]

The ferry was delayed even further by a bit of rough weather, so we quickly gave up the idea of being able to catch a night-train. Thrown straight into the hustlers, beggars and general differences in culture took us a bit by surprise even though we should have expected it, a man throwing himself at our feet, kissing the ground and our shoes - what's a good responce to that? After a nights sleep the city looks a lot more friendly in daylight, walking around the medina (central town). After walking around and looking at things, trying the local mint-tea and [View Full Entry]

Sorry this wasn´t already posted... I haven´t been able to log into the site for the last two days due to server problems on their end. The plus side of that is that I had lots of time to go over pictures and find a few good ones. Enjoy! So this past weekend, the same group of 8 of us that went to Nerja went traveling again. As I mentioned before, we had Thursday and Friday off for Corpus Christi so that gave us a nice long weekend to get away. We left on Friday on a 7:10AM train for a [View Full Entry]

Hello all, THis Morocco is a funny place. Have spent almost a week here now and will be departing early tommorow morning. A great town to spend some time in relaxing, hiking or shopping. My time has been primarily taken up with shopping. I dont think Ive been to a country where haggling and bartering over prices are such a large part of society. Sure you get a lot of bad touts, aggressive salesmen and outright bad people but it does provide you with a real avenue to meet locals. When I got off the bus at Chefchauan I couldnt find [View Full Entry]

The final few days of the Moroccan tour included seeing some cedar forests (I felt like I could have been in Canada rather than Morocco), some Barbary apes (same as the ones I saw in Gibraltar), receiving an interesting information session about the Muslim religion from our tour guide, visiting a ceramic factory and a tannery in Fes - great city - and eating a McArabia. Yes, that is correct, several of us visited McDonalds to taste the localised version of the Big Mac - main difference being it was served in pita bread rather than a bun! Also visited Meknes. Greetings all. I have been reliably informed by writers in that this is infact a French keyboard and not an Arab one. My appologise to all Arabic people for associating them with those French. Those of you who know me will understand that is a joke. Ive met loads of French in Morocco and they have all been great value and fun to be with. So I got into a petit taxi Marrakeshsaying I wanted to go to the bus station for Fez. "Why dont you go by train?" was the drivers question. Indeed why not. Trains always turn out to [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! Heading to Africa? Really? But it’s so far away. How did you do that? Well, Morocco is actually only about a one hour ferry ride across the Mediterranean Sea, but the culture there makes you feel a million miles away from Europe: crowded markets, a Moroccan carpet store, and camels. We didn’t want to kill ourselves with traveling from Portugal to Morocco in one day, so we decided to split it up with a quick night stop in Seville, Spain - “less than 24 hours” - quick! We had to take a bus from southern Portugal to Seville because [View Full Entry]

Bonjour! Well we have safely arrived in Morocco and have ended up in a small town called Chefchaouen which is high up in the Rif Mountains. We started our journey with an EasyJet flight to Malaga on Sunday then we spent a night in the Hotel Zeus in the delightful city of Malaga. We left quite late on the Monday morning and walked to the bus station to catch the midday service to Algeciras. We were suitable disappointed with the number of package tourists on this bus as there were a glut of them on the plane in hen party pink [View Full Entry]

Made it to morocco and arrived around midnight local time. Not a good time to be landing in Tangiers. Everthing is closed, you are in a muslim nation, 3rd world country, dont speak the language, havent exchanged monies yet, dont have accomidation, oh and a riot on the boat has broken out by everyone trying to get their passports stamped. Not even kidding. I guess 'lines' have not made their way to Morocco yet. Because once the guy set up a table to stamp passports, he got mobbed. So he moved to the other side of the boat and it just [View Full Entry]

We had it all planned out. Leave Malaga at 7am. Get to Gibralter at 9am, get tickets to Morocco. Hit Morocco by noon, RIGHT? Negative! We finally made it to Morocco about 2, luckily they're an hour behind in Africa. My first taste of the Arab community was great. Damn the American media for instilling the fear factor in me. Arabs are excellent people, even if they think im Canadian, just kidding. Morocco was excellent, we found the only beer in the entier community. I have a new found taste for Warsteiner. : ) [View Full Entry]
