Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Ok, so we made it safely to Tangiers. We got up early and took a bus, a ferry, and now a train down to Fes. We,ll arrive around 10:30pm and meet up with Phil, myfriend who is joining us. As soon as we got our train tickets, we asked for a restaurant and were taken to Pizza Hut. Very tasty. We are looking forward to shopping in the souks and buying lots of carpets and leather. wow! i went to morocco! i went with lan, aapta, tatiana, consuelo, and alex. we took a six hour train ride and a 2 hour ferry and ended up in tangiers, the port city on the strait of gibraltar that the movie casablanca was ACTUALLY based on. in tangiers, we explored the medina (marketplacey area), the palace, and the new section. thanks to lan, we tried every single type of street food in the city. throughout the trip we had tons of delightful mint tea. later we spent a night in chefchaouen, an incredibly picturesque town in the mountains about two [View Full Entry]

Being in Morocco is exhausting. The buses are always late, you're always paying someone something for something and there's a constant battle between you and people who want to rip you off, sell you things, show you around, "make massage", invite you to their house for mint tea, marry you, etc.... On top of all that, I think I need to start wearing a t-shirt that says "NOT JAPANESE!" But really, it's worth it. I love Morocco!! From Fes we went down to the Sahara and camel trekked through the Erg Chebbi (massive dunes) and camped out with the Berber nomads [View Full Entry]

Dad, there´s a monster at the end of this book. I´ve put it at the end so you can dodge it. I was in Madrid for a couple of days only. The most interesting thing I have to say about it is that everything moves at a very leisurely pace. I saw the Prado and that was very nice, but I must say, Madrid held no magic for me; simply put, it was just a dry, hot, big city in my eyes. If I were to decide now, I would see no need ever to return to it. With that in [View Full Entry]
