Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Tangier .... what can one say? There is a tout on every corner and a taxi stopping to offer his services on every block. Tangier is much larger than we thought, and the initial impressions were not that good. We arrived to find that the Hostel had closed and turned into a Snack Bar (which is fine I guess, if you are hungry). So we ended up down the road at Hotel Charf. Don't know what "Charf" means yet, if we find out we'll let you know. Our room overlooks the beach and the port, so we do have a nice [View Full Entry]

Ever since I heard the haunting lyrics and music of Donovan's song "Tangier", I have wanted to go there, and now, here I was! I had been thinking about going to Morocco for a while, as I had been already to Turkey, and Egypt, and I had enjoyed them both. I really enjoyed going to Muslim countries and talking with people of that faith, coming to a better understanding of them and hopefully helping them to come to a better understanding of Americans in general and of me in particular. Then my best buddy and I both saw "The Bourne Ultimatum" [View Full Entry]

I have discovered that waking up at 6 AM is always a mistake. The idea, originally suggested by Abdullah of Auberge de Jeunesse, was to catch the 6:50 train to Tangier so that we could arrive by midday. This turned out to be foolish, as even though we managed to catch the train we were so exhausted by the time we reached Tangier that after finding a hotel, the "Promenade Palace," we turned in until 6 pm. The one good thing that came out of the whole affair was the sight of Venus in the morning sky, closely conjuncted with another [View Full Entry]

We woke early to get picked up at 7:05 for our tour of Tangier, Morocco. It was nice to be part of a tour as they bypassed some of the entry and control checkpoints boarding the ferry that everyone has to go through. The 40 minute ferry ride (catamaran fast ferry) was a bit up and down as the seas were a little rough. However, we arrived in Tangier with no one getting seasick. Whew! We started with a bus tour of the different sections of Tangier. Tangier was an internationally controlled city for much of the 20th century so that [View Full Entry]

Starting to Explore Morocco As most people do, I took the ferry from Algeciras to Tangiers. After inquiring about times and prices I thought it was worth it paying a bit more for the fast boat, cutting the trip short from two and a half hours to one hour. Little did I know that the boat would be over an hour late and the trip would take two and a half hours anyway, most of that time spent balancing on a shaking hall, queueing up with other two hundred people to have my passport stamped. 'At least I won't have to [View Full Entry]

For Meg's last weekend in Morocco we headed to Chefchaouen, a quaint mountain town just five hours outside of Fes, known for its brightly painted blue buildings and its drugs. Despite its reputation as a mecca for drug-tourists in Morocco--and the constant pestering that it brings from local youth trying to make their share of profit--the town is actually quite charming. The medina is small and the lanes wind up and down the mountain, past houses that have been whitewashed and painted in varying shades of Smurf blue. There isn't much to do in Chaouen (as it is called by the [View Full Entry]

I had to wake up early because the bus to Chefchaoune was leaving at 8am. So I got into the bus station which is just outside the medina and bought my ticket and thereafter had a cheese crepe essentially like a "cheese kothu". One thing being vegetarian has done to me, I have started eating loads of eggs, cheese and oranges. Guess I got to get the protien and vitamins from somewhere. While enroute to Chefchaoune I finished Shadow of the Wind. Chefchaoune bus station doesn't look like one and you got to take a taxi to the medina. Chefchaoune is [View Full Entry]
