Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

I had never heard of Martil - which was my biggest reason for going there. It turned out to be a small beach town, very relaxed and full of tourists, all of whom were Moroccan. Once again I excaped the tourist traps created for foreigners and found myself mixed in with tourists from Fes, Marrakech, Tetouan and Casablanca, plus the usual assortment of locals. Martil is a short taxi ride from Tetouan, which is an hour or so by bus from Tangier. I have heard great things about Tetouan, but didn´t stop to visit the city since I was eager to [View Full Entry]

When I went to the bus station in Meknes to see if I could get a grand taxi or a bus to Chefchouen I found that there aren´t any direct taxis, plus the only bus is at 5am. I didn´t feel like waiting another twenty hours for the next bus, so I took the first bus that was heading north. It would take me to Tangier and I figured when I got to Tangier I could stay if I liked it, or see if I could get to Chefchouen from there. Luckily on the bus I happened to sit next to [View Full Entry]

Morocco has Camels

I have now officially been to 4 continents! I doubt I got the full scope of Africa, but it was a start. At the beginning, on Friday, we left Granada around 1:30 in the afternoon to drive to Algeciras where we caught the ferry to Ceuta. Ceuta is right across the straight of Gilbralter (we saw the Rock) and is technically still Spainish territory. Interesting Factoid about Ceuta, it is where Franco declared The Spanish Civil War: we saw the building (from a bus) Anyway, once we reached the continent of Africa, we still hadn't reached Morocco. Customs took forever; they [View Full Entry]

me!

I didn’t sleep all that well the night before my trek to Morocco. Was worried that I wouldn’t wake up in time to catch the bus. Got to the San Sebastian bus station with plenty of time to spare. The woman selling tickets spoke perfectly good English and was there to serve customers. No future for her me thinks. She said I needed to remember twenty but when it came down to it that number had no real significance to me. The bus took slightly over three and a half hours to wend its way down towards the ferry terminal. The [View Full Entry]

I can live off this salad. Wandered the town even more... it's actually much better than I think Tangier would have been, although I haven't been to Tangier. On the way back to the train we walked along the beach where we had to go through a yard and then cross the street to go over the fence. On the way into Asilah all the townies hopped the fence to walk into town, while we took a cab. The train to Fes was 82dh (we rode 2nd class). We stayed at Hotel Mansour, paid 150dh for the two of us. We [View Full Entry]

So we made it and have been to 3 cities already... found an internet cafe to write in l'medina in Asilah. Almost out of time though so this is my little message for now..Getting a little hungry and there are only a few hours left in the day. Thank goodness I never took a typing class or I would be SCREWED on this keyboard where I have yet to find an @ sign.. silly, yes! The train took us about 4 hours to get to Asilah from Rabat. We don't have watches so not too sure about that. It's much easier [View Full Entry]

Ok, so it was Ronda one weekend, and then the following weekend I made a spur-of-the-moment trip to Morocco Africa with some of my IFSA-Butler friends. The trip was such a culture shock, and I would go back in a heart beat. Here is how it all went down: Our program director gave us the information for guided tours through Morocco so we would be safe and know where to go. The tour gave us 3 days in the cities of Tétouan, Tangier, and Chef-Chauquin (sp.). We took a tour bus from Málaga to Algeciras (1.5 hours) to catch a ferry [View Full Entry]

The trip to Morocco was incredible. We really didn't know what to expect so we were prepared to face a shady tour guide and all the worst-case scenarios associated with a developing country. But as soon as we met our tour guide in Málaga we knew we were in good hands. It ended up being six of us, our friend Jim decided to join us last minute. After the bus ride to Algeciras, which is the port in Spain, we boarded the ferry that would take us to Ceuta, the port in Morocco. From the ferry we could see the rock [View Full Entry]

We both actually managed to get up at six thirty and surprisingly our first argument wasn't until much later on. We caught a petit taxi to the station and the driver tried the usual tricks of 10dh each for baggage even though the journey only cost 10dh itself. Due to the early morning I wasn't feeling up to my usual heated argument, so I told him he could take 14dh for everything or nothing at all. Maybe he sensed that to mess with me first thing in the morning was a dangerous thing, but he accepted with little protest. With the [View Full Entry]

Taking the bus through the mountains was wonderful, if not a little hairy as the driver passed every other vehicle on the road. We arrived into Chefchaouen around 3:30 pm and mercifully took a petit taxi up the steep hills to our hotel/hostel. The town is built right into the side of a mountain, so every road is either up or down, and some of them very steep! It is a beautiful setting, and a lovely little town. The people who live here have very strong legs from going up and down the streets all day! We are staying at Hotel [View Full Entry]
