Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

Yes, it has been quite some time. Well we enjoyed our "long" stay in Essaouira and headed through Marrakesh once again to get to the Cascades de Ouzoud. It took us two buses, a grand taxi and a long downhill hike to get to the "camping" place. In OUzoud we slept in a Berber tent, had a beautiful lunch overlooking the falls and a cliff with at least 3 troops of Barbary Apes, which are actually monkeys, climbing it... then we spent an entire afternoon jumping over waterfalls and into natural pools... I felt like I was 10 years old again. [View Full Entry]

Sorry, yes, I am still alive- just in an area where it´s reasonably difficult to access the internet on a regular basis- but I got Sophie´s (presume it was Soph, sounded like her) rather alarmed text the other day and realised that it´s actually been a while since I checked in and let you guys know that I´m safe, so I thought I would just, you know, do that. Um. I´m safe. There. [View Full Entry]

I'm currently enjoying the beautiful idle of Chefchaouen and, as your keen senses have I am sure detected, not at home- I have at this stage just a little more money then I expected, so I thought I'd stick around for another week or so. Besides, this plaace has moutains, lots of mountains. I like mountains. [View Full Entry]

Turns out Casablanca was pretty much a bore- not even Rick's could save it. Alas, it's now obvious to me that the REAL Casablanca was a set solely the property of Pinewood Studios tm. So, I've come up the coast to the cool and Cooler seaside town of Asilah. Soph, I think you'd like it here- there's art everywhere, paintings on the streetside walls and everything. For some reason Morroco does seem to hold the vestiges of a Hippy's paradise. [View Full Entry]

Hello..?? is there a taxi in the house? Obviously not, or not enough anyhow. The quick CTM bus trip from Fes left us at a building site in downtown Chaouen. The local chaffeurs hadn't been briefed on the location of the new Gare Routiere and it took us the best part of an hour to hail one to get us up to the Hotel Tabouta. A bad start got better though as we discovered why this small Rif valley town has become a bit of a haven for backpackers in recent years. I would liken it too Pai in Thailand for [View Full Entry]

ello - since touching down in the "costa del slags" (almeria) with the rest of essexs geezers and birds ive made my way down the spainish coast on the slowest buses ever. along the way ive met a swede and a show off. Spain seemed alright but the welcome to tangier was one of lapping the city in a fiat uno (uno fast car). having this italian sports car as my carridge i expected to be at my first nights lodgings in no time. unfortunately my driver (despite claiming to be from tangiers) clearly was agriphobic as he didnt have a [View Full Entry]

We arrived to Chefchaouen on the 24th. I had really been looking forward to coming here and, aside from being smack in the middle of the Sahara, this is my favorite place so far in Morocco. The town is nestled in the Atlas mountains in the north. The city is built into the mountains so the streets are winding and very steep and there are many sets of uneven, steep stones stairways. The city earned it's nick-name "The Blue City" because the majority of the walls and doors and stairs (pretty much anything you can paint) are whitewashed various shades of [View Full Entry]

Asilah is a beautiful town. The Medina is perfectly built for the climate - narrow passageways, open rooftops and courtyards, communal corridors in houses and all painted in perfect white. There’s an old palace with an open balcony 20m above the rocks once used to execute infidels and christians along the beachfront. Another beach 3kms to the South of town is larger with big waves good for surfing, and amazing fish restaurants where we had a huge 3-person Tajine. We got here by train from Tangier. Trains in Morocco are really efficient, on time, and there was even a teaman! [img=ht [View Full Entry]
