Background: In 788, about a century after the Arab conquest of North Africa, successive Moorish dynasties began to rule in Morocco. In the 16th century, the Sa'adi monarchy, particularly under Ahmad AL-MANSUR (1578-1603), repelled foreign invaders and inaugurated a golden age. In 1860, Spain occupied northern Morocco and ushered in a half century of trade rivalry among European powers that saw Morocco's sovereignty steadily eroded; in 1912, the French imposed a protectorate over the country. A protracted independence struggle with France ended successfully in 1956. The internationalized city of Tangier and most Spanish possessions were turned over to the new country that same year. Morocco virtually annexed Western Sahara during the late 1970s, but final resolution on the status of the territory remains unresolved. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997. Parliamentary elections were held for the second time in September 2002 and municipal elections were held in September 2003.

To begin with...I know you will all love this. I calculated the time wrong as to when I had to get up. I got up WAY too early. I had a taxi coming at 4:45 to take me to a bus stop where I was being picked up for a day trip to Morocco. I got to the bus stop and met two nice guys from England. We definately hit it off and spent the day together. The bus went around picking up people and then we were in Tarifa. We took a boat which was about 30 minutes to Tangier. [View Full Entry]

Already 3 week spent in Morroco, time flies ! My favourite places are: *Chefchaouen: This cute little town in surrounded by mountains and canabis farms :) The vatmosphere is very friendly and most walls inside the medina (old town) are painted in blue. *Merzouga: Very touristy but still enjoyable, that's the place with the highest sand dunes in morroco (up to 300) meters. Riding a camel for hours is an interesting experience and sandboarding was both difficult and great. *Taroudannt: The southern part of morroco that we visited, close to the snow pics, this city [View Full Entry]

Glen Fucking Hoddle! The very man was on my flight to gib. Fantastic omen. Other than that gib is a bit soul less, its got a massive rock that I walked up in converse and skinny jeans. Chaffage and pain. The monkeys are a devious bunch of bastards. Just ask kate that is one granola bar down and mike who got sucker punched in the stomach by one. Bad times. Now in Morocco of all places. Freezing in the morning, boiling at noon. Hygiene level is already pretty low. Shower to follo later this evening. 10 dirham for a hot one. [View Full Entry]

Alive and well in Tangier. We got in about 4:30 this afternoon. Interesting place, makes the winding streets of Spain look positively organized. I'd heard bad things about Tangier from a few people, but I like it well enough. A little aggressive in terms of people trying to sell you things, or give you tour guide services you don't want, but still pretty okay really. Tree and I met up with a couple other travellers on the bus out of Sevilla this morning, Caitlin and Iku. American and Japanese women respectively. They are both quite nice, and we are now sharing [View Full Entry]

We took a public bus from Tangier to Chefchaouen. Chefchaouen is nestled in the Rif Mountains. It has a very romantic and bohemian ambience. You will find artists and craftsmen everywhere. There are also quite a lot of pleaces to trek in the mountains. I did not trek however, because I was freezing cold. Being from Southern California, I have a very hard time acclamating to the cold. I was more than happy wandering through the medina, visiting the museum, chatting with the locals, and drinking hot Moroccan Mint tea. This village is so cute and everyone is so kind. We traveled by train to Tangier from Rabat. We all were a little let down by Tangier. It is very busy and you are hassled quite a bit. We all ventured out together to explore the Medina and search out the Kasbah. We were asked by nearly everyone we saw if we needed a guide. Everyone claims to be a guide and of course they all know their way around the Kasbah. We decided we could handle it on our own. It was great fun! We were completely lost several times but always found our way. We wanderd the medievil [View Full Entry]

I have heard a lot about Morrocco and it was definately high on the list of places to go while studying abroad! However, Salome's dad made me a little hesitant because it can be dangerous and I thought I would only go if it were with a group of friends, including at least one guy. BUT, I ended up going just my roommate and I, no regrets! Morrocco, Northern Africa, is over 98% Muslim and I decided before I left that I would respect the fact that women do not show their arms and legs there. I didn't cover my hair [View Full Entry]

While on a nice trip to the Costa del Sol in Spain(Marbella, Puerto Banus), we decided to take a day trip over to Tangiers, Morocco on the high speed catamaran from Tarifa, Spain. The city of Tangiers is about 700,000 and sits on the north coast of Africa near the Strait of Gibraltar. The native populations are called Berbers. They are identified with their long robe like clothing with soft vertical stripes. Our good friend Ingrid was on the trip with us. We had rented an apartment in Puerto Banus, and explored the region each day with a different day trip. [View Full Entry]

At the cross-roads of Europe and Africa and of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, Tangier opens the door to Morocco. There is still an air of mystery about the city, going back to the time when Tangier was an international zone. Board the coach for a scenic drive along the coast to Cap Spartel. Stop to visit the legendary Hercules Caves overlooking the sea. According to Greek mythology, Hercules, half god and half human passed away in the caves after separating Gibraltar from Africa. Next, experience an expression of traditional Moroccan folklore, the Fantasia. Witness a spectacular dis [View Full Entry]
